Bob Dylan wrote the original song, but when he heard Jimi Hendrix's cover, he said, "I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way ... Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it's a tribute to him in some kind of way."

Can't believe this reaction video has been so overlooked? Sorry guys. Hendrix was an absolute legend. This song was recorded in 1968 I believe. This song was actually written by Bob Dylan. Probably my favorite song performed by Hendrix but he had SO MANY incredible songs.

Made this kind of music at the same time the Beatles were big. Hendrix was a genius. Nothing before sounded remotely like this. This was a cover of a Bob Dylan song btw. There was so much good stuff flowing around in the late 1960s it’s mind blowing.

Only 95 views at the time of writing this comment? Was this blocked at one point? This video should have way more views, Hendrix is a legend. I usually watch all your reactions, and I even missed it. If you ever do more of his stuff, "If 6 was 9" is fantastic. All along the Watchtower was original written by Bob Dylan.

This song was written by and first recorded by Bob Dylan, on his "John Wesley Harding" album. Jimi released his version on his 1968, double album, "Electric Ladyland". Upon hearing Jimi's version, Bob Dylan said, "It's his song now".

This was during a time music was rapidly changing, For Woodstock and the Vietnam war. Guitar music was evolving from guys that stood like statues and slowly strummed a quiet song to a few guys like Hendrix that could make the strings literally talk to them. Many of the songs during that time directly or indirectly spoke to the ongoing war. Watch towers as mentioned in the song were raised look out posts built along the “wire,“ barbed wire perimeter’s surrounding more permanent bases housing US soldiers and used to spot and slow down North Vietnamese attackers. Americans were use to fighting wars all out with overwhelming force, goals and carefully worked plans but because of politicians were forced to fight as if one hand were tied behind there back and got bogged down in guerrilla warfare. Battles would be fought to take ground only to abandon it and walk away. Fighters pilots would watch Chinese ships unloading supplies for the VC and be denied targeting for fear China would enter the war. Americans grew tired of seeing friends, neighbors and family go off and die for no gains or clear goals and seemingly no end. If Jimmy Hendrix had not gotten into drugs and overdosed there is no telling what amazing music we would have heard from him. I grew up as rock was born. I remember the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show, Elvis, The Temptations, Jan and Dean, The Beach Boys and the ever expanding and evolving styles of music with Rock leading the way. Woodstock and the Vietnam war are areas you should at least spend an afternoon studying as better understanding where we came from will help understand an appreciate how we got here and learn from the past and make terms such as watch towers a little more meaningful. High ground most often provides a military advantage but for the men in the watch towers the VC knew exactly where to aim and couldn’t have felt very advantageous to our soldiers.

You guys are great! I was a 14 year old fledgling guitarist back in ‘68 when I first heard this song. It stopped me dead in my tracks. From that moment onward I became his student. There are so many good reasons why Jimi is a legendary guitarist, too many for this commentary. But this song exemplifies some of those reasons. His solos are filled with many types of emotions, emotions of longing, of fear, of anger, and of warning. That’s what he was capable of back then so you can begin to imagine how far ahead of his time he truly was. 2 points of interest: This cryptic song was written by Bob Dylan in ‘66 which he recorded on an album entitled “John Wesley Harding”. But it was Jimi’s rendition that brought it to a worldwide level. He took Dylan’s lyrics and amplified the song’s serious message with his music in a way that made people stop what they were doing and listen. How powerful is that? The opening chords of the song are powerful. To get that sound, he used an acoustic 12 string guitar. A 12 string has this rich, full, almost orchestral sound when played. He opened the song like that to grab people’s attention. To that I would say…mission accomplished. A few other Hendrix tunes to consider reactions: - Manic Depression - Crosstown Traffic - Villanova Junction (From Woodstock Festival) (Live) - Red House (Are You Experienced CD) *Best Blues solo IMO - Fire (Are You Experienced CD) Cheers!

In his lifetime Hendrix had three albums - and this was his last and greatest album. Yet you are talking about someone who recorded everything he ever did. People still find stuff of his. Back in the day people took tape recorders and recorded shows. Not all of the recording are any good. Not all of the studio works were finished when he died. However, regarding your "Hawaii" observations - consider listening to an album called "Rainbow Bridge" which was a live concert in Hawaii. His studio version of the Star Spangled Banner is a stark contrast to his versions at Woodstock and the Atlanta Pop Festival. While I can't find Hendrix's version on KZfaq, here's a halfway decent cover of "Pali Gap" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8-CZ8l0meDTcoU.html
