I just got back from a place called Bikaner, in the Rajasthan province of North Western India -- and I found myself at a temple where a man worships 25,000 rats. Not only does he (and all people in his community) live among these rats, but they actually believe that they are the reincarnation of their dead family members. Aunts, uncles, parents, grandparents and cousins - in the form of dirty rats!!

Last year 2 rats traveled their way in an Amazon box into my house. I still get chills up my spine if I see a shadow in the corner of my eye. I don’t know how you did that Drew!

@@prashantk805 not at all. I don’t see live beings disgusting. If the rat walks on the grounds of that neighborhood, why not wear your shoes indoors since shoes are considered unclean indoors. In fact, I don’t thinks rats are disgusting in general. But the type of disease rats can give to humans is what’s dangerous. Don’t twist my words, MR. ratlover.

@@gunsal9891 it is ok to be called as Ratlover rather than called as Ms/Mr Animal eater. shoes has been removed in respect of principal deity, not for rats. Otherwise sharing eatable with them could be avoided, I do found uncomfortable. Those people are native ones and could be easy for them.

This temple is more of caste specific, people from Charan caste go their to worship their goddess and their reincarnated members, outsiders number is very low, and you will se very unbelievable things in India happening with opened eyes and you will scratch your brain how to belive in this

The fear of "Not Being" after death is so powerful for these people, that they brainwashed themselves into believing that if they worship these rats, that they too will be reborn as a rat after death, so they can come to this very temple to feast. Very interesting concept. Religion makes people do interesting things.

You may be surprised, I've had both cats and rats as pets at the same time, and them living together, growing together, they were always friendly and gentle with each other. But I wouldn't trust any random cat with my pet rat. I also had a friend that had a black labrador, and a white rat, and the rat used to ride on the dogs back, they played together too.

@@Theunknownking1234the thing is, 1. Dog or cat temples don’t have upwards of 20,000 of them in one congested temple, 2. Cats and dogs don’t eat their own feces/urine naturally like rats do. 3. Usually dog and cat temples are kept tidy, this temple is not. While I agree every creature is equal that doesn’t mean their life is the same thing. Some animals are predators and some are prey, we humans are just at the top of the food chain and can control this. Also no offense but who was killed for thinking the earth was round? Galileo is the only notable case and he wasn’t killed he was put on house arrest for the rest of his life.

Just to be clear, I'm an indian and I had the same aversion as Drew while watching the video, if not more. Its not really surprising that people don't get sick, because they're all probably just immune to it. Humans at the end of the day did once live in the jungle for a long long time. Its just one of those old religious tales that has made it to present day and there's still a group of people who follow it. But this or the other weird cultural stuff does not represent vast majority of India or the indian people

Hi drew ,but there is a translation error. same fate with the god ganesh there is also a translation error there. A guide tells us his story: “Karni Mata, a Hindu sage considered the incarnation of the Goddess Durga, when her son drowned, asked Yama, the god of death, to bring him back to life. He said he couldn't, but finally gave in to the pleas and had him reincarnated as a rat.
