An expensive mistake cost me $300 here in Switzerland. Head to www.squarespace... to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain.
Today we wake up in Gimmelwald and then take a tour of Murren and a costly mistake means I can only find one room in the whole region and am forced to pay 250 CHF, but it is really that bad?

What you fail to mention is that Wengen, Murren and Zermatt are car-free villages, thus enhancing one's stay where the freedom to roam is only interupted by the occasional clip-clop of horses hooves carting the goods around that would be done in other towns by truck and vans. Lovely video series, that sells Switzerland in a very REAL way. Greets from an expat, living near Bern, Steve.

Hiya Paddy. Epic drone footage. Beautiful. You sound so much better. Stuff happens. And you go with the flow. I love the way you do things. Freestyle is good. Sometimes research is overrated. Just experience for yourself. Murren looks very peaceful. The views from the hotel are insane. Breathtaking. 8.37 those views. Thank you for taking us with you. Perfect music. My god, you still had to make your own bed. But for that view. Ok. I would take it. You got your rainbow. Loved this. Great video. Ok, I am going to watch another episode. Paddy that was brilliant, I enjoy not having everything booked when I travel, not only can it allow for problems you may face but it allows for spontaneity, the price for that freedom means occasionally you pay more but it also means you don't waste money if you have a problem or if you want to take a detour. I live in Switzerland for already few years and used to think that it is expensive. But this summer, I had a vacation in the USA, and the prices there are crazy. P.S. Sometimes (in Switzerland) it could be cheaper to book a room directly with a hotel (by phone or website) instead of using booking or Airbnb. Not always, but sometimes it works.

I know just where you’re staying, Paddy. I usually stay at the establishment right next to it. Murren is expensive, but you can get a room in your place for just about half the cost if you book out a bit under a year in advance and others not directly on the cliff face for even a bit less. That said, you’re traveling the way you need to for this endeavor so just chalk it up to an unexpected expense (last minute, weekend, holiday,etc.) and enjoy that very special view you had. Murren is beautiful. Looking forward to your next leg as you’ll be traveling ground I’ve only seen from the train window.

What others have said - if you can deal with the uncertainty, $300 for that freedom (and views) is nothing. We're going to be in that area for 3-4 nights at the end of May. I can't decide if we should stay up there (like Rick Steves says to) ) or base ourselves in the valley and go up to each side to hike as weather permits. Take care!

If you travel on a shoestring and keep things fluid and flexible, you are going to occasionally have those unavoidable situations. Overall you still probably come out ahead of where you would be if you planned every step of the way, then had to deal with cancellations and rescheduling. I tend to plan every step in advance, but only because I currently have limited time for any trip, with a very fixed start and end. One of the things I look forward to is being able to travel even remotely like you do and saying not sure what comes next. Hard to plan every step of an adventure; you only get what you planned for.

Like always, such superb videography. I messaged you recently that your videos remind me of the beautiful photography I remember in National Geographic magazines as a child, but I'm always late to the party and posting days after the episodes premier, so you likely don't even see them. Hopefully you will see this one as I see in your comments you have 1 on 1 advice for fellow new YTers, that is me, old but new, but when I click it, it takes me to Production Producer for $6 a month. That seems too much of a deal to be right. So when joining there are occasional group chats or? Thanks for all the great videos. BTW, if you are heading to the South of France (home of my younger days) on your European adventure, I'd love to share some great locations. Best wishes.

This is gorgeous. Thank you for doing these videos. This whole trip has been brilliant. I never looked at Switzerland as a destination and these videos and views almost changed that for me. ALMOST. The affordability of S.E.A. holidays has kind of ruined my desires of European travel. Maybe once I get more travel around Asia like you did and more reliable funds, I'll be ready to make that European movement.

TL:DR No one asked for my opinion. 😂 Wish this series was pulling me in more, I love hiking & a change/new challenge but I've started to just have this on in the background or on 1.5 speed now. Ive been watching out of habit as a long time follower. Paddy as a person/creator is great & so its jarring to not vibe with his stuff for this series. Support & appreciate your hard work creating the shots/story telling even if this isnt your best work & formulaic in my lame opinion. 😅 I hope to be drawn in by the end but really just looking forward to next adventure or something suprising in the editing.

@Intrepidity
@Intrepidity Жыл бұрын
The cost of being a tourist is hell. The cost of living is quite alright, actually. I'm spending the same percentage of my wage in Switzerland as in other countries I've lived, which means the absolute money left over at the end of the month is also radically higher. Besides, things like rent are even lower in absolute terms than in cities like Paris or London, but salaries are twice or triple that of those cities.
@lindabuck2777
@lindabuck2777 Жыл бұрын
@@Intrepidity Agree! I had a roommate in Sedona Az, a Mecca if you will of ‘new age’ and ‘spiritual’ offerings. My roommate offset her rent living in another state but renting her room to some of her clients. She is a healer so all who came were with that spiritual energy-very nice people. My favorite couple were from Switzerland! They were both avid travelers so I was told of all their travels like a perfect storyteller in a book with details. Admittedly they were both in finance and I could tell well off, didn’t act it. I heard every detail of costs compared to many countries, so much so I want to live in Switzerland lol. I know that as a tourist I’m going to have unforeseen circumstances and expenses hidden so I mentally prepare for it. Besides, when all is said and done, I refuse to let lack of finances to mar my experience that is worth anything I’ve gone through which is what-couple minutes of angst?!? Lol any way one can travel will have all experiences! 🙏🏻❤️🤔

Paddy. When you were explaining about how you had searched for a room or hotel, but everything was fully booked because of the holiday weekend, except for the $300 hotel room, you should have pointed at the camera, and leaned into it with a condescending smile at the same time, and said: 'but it doesn't matter, because you lot are paying for it!!'. Then, without saying anything further, hold that smile and pointy finger for thirty seconds. That would have had me in stitches mate.
