On April 11th, 2023... The entire NHL changed with the outcome of one game. The Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins faced the Chicago Blackhawks in game 81 with playoff & draft lottery implications surrounding the entire game. With the chance at Connor Bedard on the line for the Blackhawks.. the outcome of this game would change the entire NHL as we know it.

It's crazy how an entire season can come down to one play. I never could figure out why Chicago tried so hard to win that game vs Pittsburgh but guess it all turned out ok for them anyway. 😕

Because Chicago wasn’t actually tanking. The players tried hard all year because of coach Luke Richardson. The players wanted to win every game and players didn’t actually wanna lose. We coulda taken guys out that were actually playing well like toews, athanasiou, raddysh, mrazek but Chicago didn’t unlike the ducks taking guys like zegras and Mictavish out of the lineup completely. Others were tanking, Chicago simply just sucked.

@@Blackhawkenjoyer Zegras (81GP) and McTavish (80GP) missed a combined three games last year. The Blackhawks absolutely, unquestionably tanked on purpose. Trading away young stars like Debrincat for three draft picks, trading away Kane, trading Dach, icing what was effectively an AHL team, etc. Like they tanked hard and purpose and got rewarded for it, just fucking own it. The fact that they are getting 1OA despite that fact and all the off-ice stuff with the Beach situation is absolutely fucked. And I say this as a Sens who had no strong feelings about the Hawks or even skin in the game for the Bedard lottery.
@Blackhawkenjoyer
@Blackhawkenjoyer 11 ай бұрын
@@mattfisher5402 trading players away is how you rebuild its not called tanking. At the end of the season those players were taken outta the lineup to lose on purpose weather it was 1 or 30 they still tried to lose. You must not know how rebuilding works. Trade away the older players to get good picks. And tanking is players and coaches legit losing on purpose. Huge difference. And stop acting like you care about Kyle beach because nobody said anything about 3 first rounders last year I went back and checked all the posts from than and nobody said shit.

@@Blackhawkenjoyer only from a blackhawks fan... I watched multiple games of your team's. It was some of the worst hockey I've ever seen in the NHL. Your team has multiple players with no image on the nhl site. Your team iced an AHL team while trading away your good players for no reason, and you got rewarded for it. Also, if you were to lose picks, it would've been this year. The three last year were traded to you do the league couldn't take them away. Also, sorry that Zegras and McTavish missed a combined 3 games, I'm sure that's really on purpose. Are you gonna attack Terry next for missing away games because his wife gave birth?

It's always interesting to find those "what if " moments in any sports league . The fact that it was game 81 for both teams makes it even more interesting. When people say they can't have an impact on the world around them , I always tell them they never know what their interactions with others will really do and you may never really know . A journey man nhl player scores a goal and the penguins fell apart . Who would have thought that would have lead to the Bruins losing in the first round after the season they had . It's a weird, weird world and time we live in .

I'm a Pens fan and this game made me mad as hell. But after watching this, I realize that loss might be what we really needed. No way were the Pens going to beat the Bruins in the first round. That would have opened the door to the Bruins winning the Cup and I hate the Bruins. But more so than that, we cleaned house of our garbage management and got arguably one of the best management options out there. Had we won that game, we might still have our old garbage management.

Great video. I disagree on Florida over Boston being the biggest upset in playoff history. The expansion San Jose Sharks in their playoff debut took down the president's trophy winning and soon to be Stanley Cup dynasty Detroit Red Wings in the 1st 8 seed over 1 seed in NHL history. Florida was a pretty good team that was a first place team just 2 seasons ago. The Sharks were a recent expansion team in an era where the league didn't reward you for being a new team like they do today. The Sharks were not anywhere near the caliber of team relative to the rest of the NHL that the Panthers are. That happened in '94.

My team wasn't even mentioned in the video, yet I suspect that this butterfly effect will affect them. If the Penguins had won, then they would have been the worst-record playoff team, and thus in line for the 17th pick in the draft, pending the question of which teams make it to the conference finals (and thus automatically get the last four draft positions). If Pittsburgh was that fragile, then they probably would have lost to Boston in the first round, and stayed in 17th place in the lottery, unlike the Panthers who made the final four (and ultimately the final two), thus causing all twelve playoff teams that did not make the conference finals to move up a position in the draft. My team is not one of those twelve teams, but the New York Islanders are. They had the second-worst playoff record among playoff teams, and were eliminated in the first round by Carolina. So they started with the 18th pick, but moved up to 17th because of this Panthers run which presumably wouldn't have happened if Pittsburgh had won against Chicago. Why does this affect my team? Because the Islanders traded their first round draft pick to Vancouver, who later traded it to my team, the Detroit Red Wings. Assuming that we ultimately select a player with the 17th pick (instead of trading it away yet again), then we will have to remember this game with respect to whatever success that drafted player has as a Red Wing, because if Pittsburgh had won then we would presumably be picking 18th instead, and that player might very well have been gone before our pick.

Fun video ... with one flaw. Buddy's goal put the Hawks in third place and they drew the lucky lottery odds. BUT, the odds wouldn't have been affected by that goal. Say they lost. That doesn't mean Anaheim might have got the third best odds. So, while the goal ended up causing Pittsburgh to miss the playoffs, the goal had nothing to do with Chicago getting Bedard. Crazy how one game can change all of hockey history. If Pittsburgh won this game as they should’ve, either the Panthers or Islanders miss the playoffs. There’s probably no way the Penguins pull off the upset against the Bruins. If the Leafs lost in the second round to the historic Bruins instead, they would not have fired Dubas rather than how they reacted by getting smoked by the eighth seeded Panthers. Lastly, who knows where Bedard ends up. Lastly, if the Panthers win that last season game, then they make the playoffs and the Devils win the division and play them while the Canes play the Rangers. Incredible

I asked myself this question: if the Penguins made the playoffs, they would get crushed by Boston and the organization would have been okay with Hextall and that would been bad decision right now. yes, it would’ve been a good Stanley cup final between Boston and Vegas, but once again, there’s no point of keeping the incredible playoff consecutive streak alive. Go ask Red Wings fans how they feel about playoff streak in their last couple of years in the 2010’s.
