I'm a Sony a7c user & my main lens is sigma art 35mm f1.2. Do you recommend this filter for travel photography? For example walking around the city, documenting, taking portraits, landscapes, food, etc.. I have an upcoming tour to Italy.
@fjhphoto
@fjhphoto 2 жыл бұрын
@@memodelahouse when taking photos like that the only real need for the ND filter would be if you like long exposures. And if that's the case then yes I would recommend this filter but in 10 stops. If you're unfamiliar with long exposure photography then you'll be totally fine without a filter.

I discovered the filters around the same time you did, and can't disagree with your opinions. I live in the tropics and mostly use fast (1.2-1.8) lenses, but use the strobe more as a fill than a main light like you do so I found the 6 stop was too much. I have since bought a 3 stop which suits my needs much better. I like the fact that unlike the square filters, I can keep these in my camera bag all the time and pull them out and use them at a whim, even if I wasn't planning to use them. I can also change lenses as many times as required without having to swap filters around. The greatest change to my photography style in the last 20 years is using these filters and going mirrorless. What a time to be alive.

I love the fact that you can minimize the size/weight of your location gear - especially on a shoot with multiple lights, with the same results. This also translates to cost of gear - the 300pro is a few hundred less then the 600pro. -The filters pay for themselves... Love your channel Francisco !!

So true! I should have added that point to the video. A Godox TT600 without HSS is actually about equal to the Godox AD200 in HSS. The TT600 is 1/4th the price too. Thanks for commenting, man.

this filters are cool! i have one of them, but my issue is that when you shooting outdoor and need to change or remove the filter you need to make sure that your hands are very clean and you need to watch out from Wind Gust , to avoid dust in your sensor and you need to find a temporary place to put your lens and let's not forget the worst-case scenario when you move from sun to shade constantly so my point is if your work involve a lot of run & gun this filter is not good for you but if you shoot without drastic change of light it's a good choice

Francisco, thank you for introducing us this product. I am interested in the product but have some unanswered questions. If we were using a typical circular ND filter, we would focus on the subject and adjust the correct exposure before popping on the ND filter. If we change scene or the exposure has changed, we would remove the filer, adjust exposure and put back the filter. Do you have to do the same and remove the filter every time you change sense or when the exposure changes to get the correct exposure first? If so, isn't that troublesome and increase the risk of getting dust onto the sensor?

Great tutorial. I'm a lighting tech in the pro photography industry, and what we would do in order to shoot pictures like this at the higher number apertures, would be to use a Profoto bi-tube head to overpower the sun, which makes it possible to get all of the products being sold in a fashion shoot into sharp focus, so that the buying public can see what they're purchasing.

Im so confused. Would not the ND filter cut just as much of the strobe light as it would the ambient light ? How do it matter where you lose the power ? In the strobe or when cut in the ND filter ? 6 stop ND filter would cut 6 stop ambient and 6stop strobe would it not ?

I had some limited experience with a Variable ND filter, but after watching this video, I was inspired to order both a 3-stop and 6-stop ND filter from STC Optics. Just today I used the 6-stop filter in full sun with my 50mm lens at f1.8 and shutter speed of 1/200 sec. The filter enabled some great off-camera flash images (used a pair of Godox AD200s on a 42-inch octabox). Thank you for the examples and recommendations!

Greetings from SW Texas. Beautiful work at the end. I've been running a Canon 6D for full-frame, with Sony a6000s prior to that. Just picked up a clean, used Sony A7R II with Sigma 50mm 1.4 ART lens. On the 6D I was running Tamron 24-70 and 70-300 f2.8 lenses. Quality ND filters for those lenses are expensive. I have an 82mm Polar Pro for the 24-70 and an 82-77 step-up ring that covers the 77mm thread 70-200. The STC sounds like a great tool. One ND filter regardless of the lens and still use the hood. Sounds like a winner. I also run a couple of the GODOX V860-II speedlights in softboxes. Using the STC ND with the A7R II and be able to use the speedlights without having to resort to HSS would be great. Landscape and art photography is a big part of what I do these days. Being able to changes lenses and run slow shutter speeds without having to swap filters on every lens change would be a BIG timesaver. Guess this is going on the "next filter purchase" list. Thanks for the video.

I have the 6-stop nd filter for my 50mm 1.8. The 6-stop filter is very strong so you're mostly going to be using it when it's SUPER bright outside(I feel like the 4-stop might be more versatile). Otherwise, I rely on my HSS Godox 300 (I would also recommend going with Godox 400, better modeling lamp and performance on a bright day) with the 36 in octa quick box. It's a good softbox but if I were to purchase again I would probably go with a softbox that has a Godox mount instead of bowen so I carry less equipment around.

I had the 6 stop and found it too dark for my 1.8 lenses and got the 4 stop that works much better for me. So I have the 6 and 4 stop if I need more. You and I talked about this a year and a half, I never leave home without them 😊

If a third party can make a backside ND filter right in front of the sensor with that little amount of room, there is no reason why Sony can't give us a an eVND in future a7x cameras. I would love to use that auto ND while changing my aperture. That effect looks so dope

So dand convenient! I used a Neewer Vision4 light recently and it doesn't have HSS but that wasn't a problem since I had the ND filter.😊

Smart choice. Lots of options to consider which is why I'm still working on the video.

Which one do you recommend for portrait photography.. 3 stop, 6 stop or 10 stop?
@fjhphoto

Depends on the lenses you usually shoot with. Avoid the 10 stop and also check out 5:59

Excellent video, very informative. Would have appreciated the exif data for the pictures at the end to see how it was a "game changer"

Most, if not all, those photos were taken with the lights at full power. I believe that's why I selected them. So if I had taken those photos with HSS instead of the ND filter then the result would be as if the light was adjusted from full power to about 1/4th. Underexposed on the model with the same background exposure I chose for those photos or proper exposure for the model using 1/4th with a background two stops brighter (overexposed). I could simulate this in an upcoming video.

Nice video! I ended up buying a a 6 stop breakthrough filter for my canon R6/Samyang 85 1.4 combo and Ad300 Pro flash. These clip ons seem really cool and I will end up grading later on when I get more RF lenses. I kind of wish I grabbed the VND you mentioned by Freewell but maybe I will grab the lower VND down the line when I also want less stops in my kit.

Thanks for the informative video. If the lens I am using is f1.8, would you still recommend ND64? I’m often shooting in bright sunlight but sometimes cloudy situations. Also please tell Robert Hall that we miss his videos :)
@fjhphoto

I miss his videos too! I believe he has some coming soon so that's good. I'll let him know he's missed, haha. Yes, 6 stops could work but 5 stops would be better. Unfortunately STC Optics sells the 5 stop in bundles with other filters though so I would suggest the 4 stop ND filter. That seems pretty good for the conditions you described.

@estrella errante Depends on your shooting style. If you use the OCF as the key light (like Francisco) then go with the 64. If you like to be a little more subtle with your lighting, then I'd recommend more of a 3 or 4 stop. I bought the 6 stop then found it didn't suit my style at all so bought a 3 stop. So now I have a 6 stop that I don't use.

There's so many factors that contribute to a photo. But the camera wouldn't make you like one or the other better. My editing hasn't changed much either.

Are you using mechanical shutter with the clip in filter? I also dont think the STC filters are compatible with the A7SIII? I think I heard that in Rob Hall's review. I have the Case clip in filters btw.
@fjhphoto

I always use the mechanical shutter at my photoshoots. Rob also made a video on the updated new stc optics filters. They have some specifically for the latest Sony cameras like A7SIII, A9II, and A7RIV.
