When someone punches you out, they have the opportunity to call you whatever they want. But really, at least they were playing defense (good or bad) compared to no defense played at all, today. It just made the game more exciting when a offensive player burned a defensive player going to the basket. Todays players have a open path to the basket. So todays players should be averaging 40 points or more and the teams should be averaging 120 points on upward a game but don't. It's really hard explaining it to someone that wasn't there.

@@donaldbutler6243 I was there, and disagree with you about pretty much everything. Occasionally hacking someone is not even defense, it's a chump move. Having to cover the amount of ground required in today's game is grueling, as opposed to just packing the paint and pushing each other. Lots of upright defenders when you check out clips from decades past, a stance that would get you benched real quick nowadays. Considering that the money, tactical expertise, coaching body of knowledge, training, talent pool etc have all grown considerably over the last several decades, it would be almost mathematically impossible for the players to somehow get worse. The rules and strategies and skill-sets have all changed, but that alone makes the game different, not worse, and objectively the level of skill, effort and overall competition is higher.

lukasaliheim it's okay we disagree, but I'm not talking about hacking (shaq a hack). I'm talking about real physical defense (pre hack a shaq). And yes clogging the lanes was one of them. In todays game there is no real defense that is allowed to be played. Granted, nobody needs to get (needlessly) hurt, but truthfully speaking there's a risk at everything. Todays flopping is an embarrassment to the game. So I quess acting lessons are involved. Which is probably the worst part of todays advanced NBA. Lastly though, todays NBA players are not more skilled than than NBA players of the past. They aren't.

When I watched this video, I remembered how legendary the 2015-2016 season was. - Kobe's retirement and last game 60 points - GSW 73-9 - Maybe the best dunk contest ever - Oklahoma's 3-1 loss in conference finals and KD had his first poor playoff performance While westbrooke had his first good playoff performance (This serie changed the nba because Kd went to golden state after that) - Game 6 Klay - Stephen curry Unanimous MVP - and of course Cavs comeback from 3-1 (first time in the finals history) and lebron's most meaningful championship and blok

You forgot to mention the blatant rigging by the league officials in the finals though. For context- that Draymond suspension was suspect, as no calls were actually made during the play. Only hours after the game after Bron lobbied for his suspension was he magically given a flagrant thus the suspension.. Now given how physical the whole series was, watch all the fouls Steph got in game 6, where he got 2 calls right away in the 1st quarter before eventually fouling out. Those calls were also suspect and soft asf. Watch how the Cavs try to deny the ball to Steph and how physical they were in defending him, aside from trying to "bump" him every chance they get. And you compare those soft a** fouls. You can try to re-watch as videos for both were uploaded here somewhere.

Bad calls happen bro😭, and if you haven’t noticed the more physical team usually gets more of the calls, there’s no way you believe the desperate Cavaliers weren’t outright being more physical than the Warriors who were sure they had the series in the bag. Also it’s hard to not see that Lebron and Kyrie simply figured them out, they were simply playing better than them for a good bit at the end there. Like there’s literally a 0.4 difference in the personal foul averages between the two teams, this series ain’t have nothing to do with the officials.

What baffles me more about the disrespect old timers like Oakley show to Giannis is that he’s actually playing old school basketball. Taking it to the rim hard rather than being flashy and cute, absorbing and dealing back physical punishment, insane commitment to both ends of the floor, power dunks, you name it. IIf you add the crazy progress he’s made since his first couple of seasons, his devotion to the city that drafted him, the fact that all his teammates love him (there’s 4-5 guys right now with him in his holidays to Greece, Pat, Carter, Nwora etc) and again, his sheer physical dominance it’s really a mystery how you can sit there with a straight face and publicly claim he’d be a role player back in the day. Go figure.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but whenever I hear people talk about the greatness of Shaq it generally comes down to his size and his strength, which allowed him to operate with impunity in the low post. After all, he was literally one of the heaviest men to ever play in the NBA. Meanwhile, he had poor work ethic, infamously poor shooting and his speed faded over the years along with his fitness level. Would he be dominant in today's NBA? Well, he'd certainly get his share of post lay-ups and he'd get plenty of rebounds, but that's only if he could keep up with the rate of play. Most plays would be over before Shaq was in position.... and let's not pretend he'd be a) taking many midrange or outside shots or b) defending them. Young Shaq? Sure, he could probably stay in and contribute. Shaq from the mid-2000s? Ummm.... they'd be giving him oxygen on the sidelines between plays.

Hot Take: We don't emphasize Turnovers enough when discussing players legacies. A turnover is the 2nd worst play in basketball after allowing your opponent to score with bad defense. Turnovers are worse than missed shots because at least missed shots provide offensive rebound and 2nd-shot opportunities. A turnover has no redeeming value. 2nd Hot Take: Why don't we talk about how the Eastern Conference has been, by a significant margin, far inferior to the Western Conference since MJ retired? (Go look up the amount of 50 Win Teams the West has produced since MJ retired compared to the East, not even close).

In terms of 50 win seasons, in the 19 seasons since Jordan retired, the West has had more 50 win teams in 14 seasons, 3 seasons there were an equal number of 50 win teams, and only 2 seasons (2017-18 and 2019-20) when the East had more 50 win teams than the West. If you add them all up, the East has had 49 teams win 50 games since Jordan retired, and the West has had 90. If you think the East has been a stronger conference than the West in that timeframe (or on par), how are you measuring it? And I am a fan of a team in the East.

the 2016 finals was one of the most improbably unprecedented series in sports history, and it is an absolute travesty to see that people are seemingly so quick to forget this; yes, the final scores at face-value seem decisive in every other game except for 7, but the fact that each team kept clapping back in such dramatic fashion was part of what made it so competitive and unpredictable, and nobody even remembers the fact that the teams were actually so evenly matched that each team had scored the exact same amount of points in the series going into game 7. all of that on top of the cavs winning n making nba history w the comeback and lebron making his ultimate statement.... it was fucking historic on every level

the suspension softens that series and kills its impact tbh, and then the Bogut injury. The OKC comeback from 3-1 by GSW was more memorable. When you have a superstar campaigning and swaying the NBA to suspend the second best player on the other team, it's a stain that isn't going to go away. It also smells of corruption. Would Jordan or Kobe have done that? No way, they are way too competitive. It was definitely entertaining though.

As a Cavs fan, the 2016 finals were so incredibly captivating. I got to be in the CLE Q when we won game 7. I'll never have a better cultural/sports moment and I'm totally fine with that. I mean, it was so unbelievable that it wasn't even like watching basketball. It was like the city of Cleveland was the most alive its ever been

As a Warriors fan that is how I felt when we captured our 4th championship in the Curry era, I went to the watch party at chase center and it was the most amazing experiences ever, and after no other city in the world was more alive than San Francisco everyone was honking their horns and screaming “Warriors” and buildings were lit up with Warriors colors it felt like I wasn’t on earth anymore. Oh btw Gg’s on the 2016 finals win, yall fought hard and deserved it more, although im still mad we lost ive gotten over it now lol.

Please make more of these. I think Charles Oakley has early-stage dementia. Giannis is stronger and quicker than as any player of that era with the exception of Shaq in strength (he was also unbelievably quick) and probably as you said similar to the Admirial. That would have been a great match up to see. Every once in a while, I see posts that state that Larry Bird would have been a below average shooter in this era. Hard to imagine a 50, 40, 90 player would be a bad shooter and they did not even practice the 3 point shot. Who knows but perhaps he would have been a Steph Curry like talent if the game had been different. I have also seen people commenting that Jokic would have been a sub par center in the physical game of the 80s. Really, a guy that can pass and shoot like he can, and listening to Draymond Green, not exactly a weak player himself, saying that Jokic is not soft at all. I wish I could find for you that Jokic comment.

But it was the storyline leading up to game 7, a finals rematch that literally everybody wanted to see , curry looking like he was gonna take bron spot as the best player , klay taking shots bron , bron blocking curry telling him he’s still the king , everything leading up to game 7 was perfect , and then game 7 itself was perfect .

It lowkey was better because of the blowouts until game 7. Both teams were showing that any given night the other could just dominate the other. It’s rlly the only reason ppl though that it was a possibility for a 3-1 comeback. And even if it was just boring until game 7, the fact that a team came back from 3-1 in the finals automatically makes it the best in history regardless.

As a guy who grew up watching basketball in the sixties, the players weren't more physical than today, the rules just allowed them to get away with being more physical, which the rules don't allow today. Also, coming up through the years were centers who rarely had a 3 point shot . Today's game overall is far more exciting to watch and the players overall have more skills!!!

That Giannis take is already a living meme pretty much. Also yeah while the final score for each game of 2016 looks huge, in Game 5, it was wire to wire in the first half and didnt get blown open till the end. Game 6 started off a blowout but there was a near fourth quarter comeback that was derailed by a couple insane LeBron plays and a few bad calls by the refs.

I’ve always said the same about the Giannis-Robinson comp. Robinson was very fast and athletic and great on the break. If they’d given him the green light to develop and use skills like ball handling and 3 point shooting, I have no doubt he’d be what Giannis is today. Probably a better shooter too. Only thing he lacked is the meanness/mental toughness Giannis has.

The main reason why high level players are teaming up so much in the past 10 years is because of 'ring culture'. If we really want to prevent superteams from forming then the media and fans need to stop obsessing over rings and judging players abilities and talents by how many rings they have. The NBA media, fans and players are obsessed with legacies and all time rankings, much more so than any other sport. No matter how good a particular player is, if they don't have at least one ring by the time they retire, their legacies are stained. Almost like they're considered busts. Part of this started with LeBron who has had by far the most pressure to deliver of any player in the history of the NBA, starting from when he was a junior in high school. The NBA media has followed his entire career with the expectation that he would be the next MJ or GOAT candidate and has been obsessed with his 'legacy' ever since 2002. Because of that, he felt he needed to maximize his talent and live up to expectations and win as many rings as possible. Now it has spread to nearly every superstar of the past 10 years. They all feel pressure to win rings because without a ring, NBA fans and media will call you a failure, or not clutch, or not a winner. Ring culture is toxic to NBA. Damian Lillard and Bradley Beal have decided to tough it out with the teams they were drafted by instead of forcing trades to other teams with superstars so they can win rings. If they retire without winning any titles they will be vilified for not having any rings and not caring about winning. LeBron/KD/Harden change teams often because they want rings to boost their legacies, and they are vilified as well for chasing rings. Stop judging players by how many rings they have and the superteams will stop.

Exactly what I was thinking. As a football we consider Messi and Ronaldo the best players of all time even though they both never won the most prestigious trophy someone could win aka the world cup. Messi has less trophies than Ronaldo, but it gets never brought up to conversations. Cause statistically they both on pair with lots of things and far ahead from the rest

No NBA player today moves the needle like MJ did. LBJ had the lowest rated finals since Magic and Bird WITH SOCIAL MEDIA and everyone stuck at home with nothing to do but watch TV. MJs documentary had more viewers than the finals. MJ was on that Beatles mania vibe. He won three, dipped then three peated again. LBJ is constantly talked about and of course he's highly respected but that's because we have a media now that chases social media engagement so they ignore everyone else to rehash the same talking points ad nauseam. Shows dont pull the same traffic now anyway. Does anyone think that ESPN is better now?

People can find out what happened in the game, not by watching the game, by just scrolling through social media. Most people don’t even have the attention span anymore to sit and actually watch a game anymore either. You can’t use TV ratings from a world that was completely different 30 years ago as proof it was more entertaining back then or that MJ is better

Did you forget about the Lakers not even making the play in? That's the most disappointing flop we've seen in a while. With three "superstars" that's just criminal. At least the nets made it to the playoffs. And even though they got swept it wasn't like every game they played against the celtics didn't go down to the wire. That's a team with an historically great defense that was only 2 wins away from being NBA champions. But I agree with everything you said about KD and Kyrie.

Nets let themselves down thinking they were better w/o Kyrie. That was stupid.. Led to KD getting hurt and Harden wanting out. Should've let him play road games from the jump. I disagree with the fact that players are getting "mentally softer" because they reply to people on twitter because you know damn well lots of players would have been on twitter fighting with people if it was around and as mainstream as it is today. It's also got to be said that fans have become more brazen with their hatred and for these guys to keep their cool and not have another malice in the palace seems like it goes unnoticed how calm mannered a lot of players actually are. As the fan base of the nba grows, so does the hatred from fans and we forget that athletes are people too.

It baffles me when people say “blank” player wouldn’t stack up back in “blank” date bc it was so much more physical. You wanna know why it was so much more physical back in the day? Because the refs didn’t give a frick. In todays nba fouls are called for LITERALLY ANYTHING. Anyone who watched these past finals, heck, these pst playoffs as a whole would know that. Multiple times where players got called for fouls when there was literally no contact at all. If Lebron, Giannis, Embiid, etc could chokeslam and haymaker people they 100% would. Just because older players were allowed to do that stuff and current players aren’t doesnt make todays players weak. Plus the nba has almost “groomed” the current players to act how they do now. They flop because if you can get a free 2 points you’re gonna take it. The new foul has changed the perception of physicality in the nba, and that’s not the players fault. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

My NBA hot take is that when superstars team up everybody needs to give them a few years before they call it a bust or letdown. Teams need time to learn how to play together. It took the Bucks a very long time to win a chip, any other team would be trying to make a deal for a big superstar to help Giannis. GIVE TEAMS TIME TO GET THEIR CHEMISTRY RIGHT

That's the point. The existing teams have played together and thus, are winning more championship. So, if superstars are teaming up through trades, then they are looking for a quick and easy chip. And if that doesn't happen, then yes, they are a bust cause what else is the point of the team up?

Ofc it takes time for teams to build chemistry to win a championship, the whole thing about super teams is that super stars are teaming up knowing it would be easier to win one because of the absurd amount of talent in one team. Warriors 2017-2019 for example had two mvp players and among the greatest individual players oat, klay a top 5 best shooter in history and elite 2 way player, draymond elite defender and dpoy, this team is ridiculously much better than the next best team at the time. So on paper it should be easier for super teams to win one because they’re too good compared to others, but some work and some don’t, imo it depends on the team, warriors worked cuz kd joined a team already with culture and championship dna, the nets didn’t cuz they did a clean sweep and build the team around the big 3, but nothing to show for it

Good stuff Highroller, I'm not against players teaming up because all organizations are not created equally. Some organizations don't know how to win championships. Having stated that I must push back on players requesting trades in the middle of contract term limits. When LeBron moves he doesn't demand trades because he moves when contract expires. Compared to what AD did and what KD is asking for now which is demanding a trade in the middle of contract term limits. All moves aren't the same and shouldn't be lumped together.

Love the content. My hot take is that Gary Payton is arguably a top 30 player of all time. Don’t think he gets the recognition he deserves because his best year was 2000 (aka Shaq’s coronation) and because his prime was during the dead ball era of the NBA, so his numbers look worse than his impact.

I’m so happy I got a cable to watch tv during the 2016 season, about halfway into 2017 we got rid of it and since then no cable and at the time I didn’t have a phone or anything to watch basketball on

Hakeem’s scoring is below league average in terms of efficiency today. Good teams aren’t wanting a guy taking multiple long 2’s and long post ups in games. More likely he averages less not more

I agree, players should not be penalized for teaming up to win championships because all organizations are not created equally. Some organizations don't know how to win championships. Having stated that I must push back on players requesting trades in the middle of contract limits. Players should play contracts out them make moves. What LeBron did going from Cleveland to Miami is not What AD did leaving New Orleans going to Los Angeles. LeBron left after contract expired AD demanded trade in the middle of contract term.

@@SKTV1991 Yeah, it is bad when a team trades a player and don't let the player know they're shopping him and worst sometimes tell the player they're not going to trade him then does so, but a player of KD's caliber can demand a "no trade clause" in his contract that would keep a team from doing that.
