The NBA learned from the NFL. The NFL has been hamstringing defenses and hyper-protecting QBs for a couple of decades, so scores are volatile and leads are not safe. Same goes for the NBA. Shooting 3s is also a much more highly involved art than it was 20 years ago, which also plays a big role in this. People love high-scoring, back-and-forth contests - they are exciting. 20 years ago if your team is down by 20 with 5 minutes on the clock, you might as well head for the exits. Owners hated this and seem to have have solved it.

Hot Take from a fan of basketball that doesn't watch basketball: I wish they made it harder to get to the paint, but make inside shots worth 3pts, and outside shots worth 2pts. NBA can make long shots easier with each passing year, but it would be nice to see them rewarded for having to fight their way into the paint, while making it a little harder since it's worth more.
