I was thinking the same thing. Love the strat but really love those those vintage p90's and patent pending humbuckers. Those vintage strat and humbuckers and p90's have harmonic overtones that can't be emulated. Especially in those light bodies made with very old wood. You can't fully appreciate them in recordings over youtube like you can in the room. Especially side by side with modern stuff. But that flat stuff has a place in the arsenal when you want to sound like artists that use(d) modern guitars. Modern being most everything after those golden years in the 50's and early 60's.

I appreciate that you demonstrated that there are not just audible sound differences between Fender and Gibson guitars, but they also have their own individual characteristics. I dislike when people make it a contest of which is better. It really comes down to what genre and style a player wants to capture. The only answer is own every brand. Gretsch and Rickenbacker also have their own tones and characteristics. Myself, I am not above doing modifications to stabilize a guitar. For example, if the main criticism is the guitar not staying in tune. Then locking tuners may be the answer. But I always remove original strings first and replace them with my choice of Ernie Ball strings and stretch the hell out of them before choosing a tuning. I am amused when folks buy a guitar and just do standard tuning and get ticked off when they can't pick, strum, or shred like their guitar heroes. They are playing the right chords but it sounds like crap and they blame the manufacturer. They just are not aware of what amplifiers, switches, or effects settings that the artist was using, never mind the tuning. Even most acoustic guitar players use different key and off tuning, one of the most famous for doing such was Crosby, Stills and Nash and sometimes Young. When live, they were always changing guitars for different songs because each was tuned different and they had to rely on their crew to anticipate any changes that they might make, but they usually made verbal cues as in, "The next song is about...." They didn't like to clutter the stage with guitars.

@BaconatorJames 3 жыл бұрын
@@markburrows1179 Yep, that's the first thing I do too. Ernie Ball 9.5's are my favorite recently for all my fixed bridge guitars. I found 10s stay in tune better, but it's no real issue. As long as they make it through a song, I don't care. I use EB 9's on my Strat & change them frequently. When I added Grover locking tuners to my ES-339, the only guitar I have that stays in tune better is the Tele Deluxe, with Fender locking tuners. I let new strings sit overnight then play them for about an hour before I consider the string change complete. Just average locking tuners help immensely.

@@Morrison9155 why do you consider it more of a bandmaster than deluxe or the original mini twin?
@Morrison9155
@Morrison9155 Жыл бұрын
@@benjaminfowler4513 because the circuit in the bandmaster/super/pro were the same Except for the resistor in place of the mids control and whether there was also a reverb circuit. Being that the speaker impedance is different, the only major difference in the amps is the transformer, rectifier and speaker set up. The preamps are similar to a deluxe but the 6L6’s in the Super/bandmaster/pro provide a much larger healthier tone when you turn the amp past three.

My rig through the 80s and 90s consisted of 1965 Fender Pro Reverb and a 1966 Fender Super Reverb! I ran them in stereo and used a Mesa Boogie V-Twin preamp/ Distortion box and one of the original Ibanez ts808 pedals. I have owned a lot of rigs being that I'm 66 years old but I look back on that particular combination as pretty much the best tone I ever achieved! Apparently there are few fairly simple recommended things a qualified amp tech can do to improve these new Fender amps, besides possibly upgrading the speaker/s. The thing I hear emphasized the most is to have the capacitors replaced by a tech as soon as the Fender warranty expires.

You should check out what George Alessandro does with the reissue fender amps, including this new Pro. He basically strips out all the stock components and converts them to hand-wired amps that are very reminiscent to how the old fenders sounded but much improved with better grade components. Also for these new pro’s he upgraded the power transformer to something beefier and better suited for the 6L6 tubes that come in the new Pro (the stock power transformer is actually undersized, and the ‘68 custom vibrolux also has this same issue, check out the Tedeschi Trucks Fireside Session streams to hear Derrick playing a newer vibrolux George had worked his magic on). And believe me, after the Hand-Wired service is done it night and day compared to how they sounded stock.

Check out psionic audio on youtube. He will show you what needs to be done. I got a pro jr 4 new and cooled the bias and replaced the filter caps immediately. It voids the warranty but what warranty? Have the put the same cheap garbage back in? Take any reissue amps to a good tech and it will last a long long time and sound better as well

Actually bought this amp about a month ago, new. Like Matthew stated, i also didn't feel like it was a 40 watts, which is fine for me. Liked it a lot, especially the portability of it. It however failed on the 2nd set of its first gig. One 6L6 completely toasted, as well as power transformers. Tone wise, it was very ok, for a way too short period. Fender warranty is ok so i returned it. Back order for about 3 months, so i settled for a 65 DRRI, which i'm also very pleased with. Now see if it'll hold up. Regardless of the quality of my pro, very nice and honest review Matthew, best of luck to you, great player!

Try a Celestion Cream Alnico made in the UK. They are rated at 90 and give beautiful headroom yet give up the goods at the right time. It is all subjective but they have very good reviews. I love mine.

Best pedal platform for for sure. People talk a lot about vox and blackface deluxe but these are awesome.

Solid state rectifier makes sense for an amp with that type of headroom vs size. Stiffening up the output is not a bad thing. Depends on what you are looking for. Thanks for posting matthew!

If the mods to that circuit are anything like the Deluxe Reverb in the same line, the difference in headroom is simply due to a higher value NFB resistor. The less negative feedback the more distorted and louder it will be. Any amp tech worth their salt can add a switch to toggle between 2 different values to give you more or less NFB. Some people may suggest a potentiometer, but there's a very limited range where that is effective and it's just another setting to fiddle with whereas the MORE or LESS option of a toggle switch is more useful IMO.

Good playing and sweet amp! It's great to see Fender bring back a good version of this classic. Frankly, I've always thought the Pro-Reverb was one of the nicest amps Fender has ever made. I have an original 60's, blackface 2-12, which I absolutely love. Good job Fender!!

I think you could make any guitar or amp sound great. I would love to hear you play a low end amp and guitar as I feel you've got the tone in your hands. Sweet playing.That amp sounds pretty cool too.

Sweeeeeeet!!!!!!! The last jam I could feel you brother ...keep that coming...don’t be afraid to turn it loose...guitarist like you come once in a lifetime...don’t over think it let your fingers do the talking!!!!!! That was awesome watching you rip at the end and sounded pretty killer to me....I couldn’t feel a vocal though so play from the heart to...I know it was a demo...but we know your good so prove it!!!!!!!!

Matthew this is great! My vintage ‘68 Pro Reverb 2 x 12” is really special too, guys eyes widen and they go “Wow!” when the volume opens up around 5 to 7 and its tone blossoms. Usually too loud! 🤷🏼‍♂️

Great review, like your playing and your honest pro's and con's of the Amp. Nice to see Fender working with you. Be nice to continue to see that and other companies step up too. Love your content, keep up the great videos. And Oh Ya, OMG I LOVE YOUR ONE OF A KIND LES PAUL. Those were awesome videos on it as well. Cheers from Canada

Last time I play a fenders amp was in a church setting and there was a radio antenna 30 yards outside the church. As soon as I plug my amp in I can hear people talking coming out of it. Not shielded good enough but my line 6 amps was fine no noise.

I bought a deluxe that was a bassman on one channel and a regular 22 watt deluxe on the other channel. It came stock with a 75 watt Celestion V type. It really added to the headroom

I loved this amp when I demoed it recently. I like how simple the controls are (like a Princeton) but is 40 watts with more headroom. I had decided to save up for one, but ended up finding a used(mint) '68 Custom Vibrolux Reverb with 2x10" speakers at 35 Watts.
