The animations are really smooth. I'd be interested to see the "positionals" in this beat em up style. How much room the combat system has to give to make it work so people aren't just always in the middle.

The theme and character designs remind me a lot of Skullgirls, especially with the steampunk/old era theme and Rotwang looking kinda like Big Band

It’s not a beat ‘em up style fighting game. This is the Fatal Fury series line systems,. There’s a few other fighting games that used this system back in the ‘90s, but Fatal Fury is the main one, and I’m pretty sure where it comes from.

it looks like going from plane to plane isn't as huge an annoyance as some other games that have used a similar feature. Seems real intuitive, either that or you just really good at figuring it out

After all that, JW did not talk about the frame counter in training. The one just above the hit counter. So you know how many frames are between each of your button presses. Something like this should be so useful in many fighting games. To know if you make the right frame windows for certain combos and other things.

I love how they went with the king of fighters. 11/12 hand drawn animated style for me besides Street fighter 3/3 strike the king of fighters 11 and 12 style is the best hand drawn animation fighting game that there has been. I don't know why it isn't used more. I know 3D is cheaper to produce but I would love for s&k to go back to this art style

3D often actually isn't cheaper. If you're gonna make a fighting game with dozens of characters, then it is cheaper. But if you're making one with a small cast of characters, then it's cheaper to go for 2D. That's why many indie games are 2D. 3D becomes cheaper as the scale of the project becomes larger... generally. Of course there's also quite a few 3D games that didn't cost much to make, but often times... you can tell. When a game is 2D, even a low-budget game can look fantastic. And that usually isn't the case with 3D. Ultimately it depends on many factors on which one ends up being cheaper. But 3D isn't necessarily cheaper by design.

Back in 2008 having to use overpriced licensed software and high end PCs on top of way too many man hours, it was so expensive it almost bankrupted SNK, again. Nowadays it's actually pretty viable to make a throwaway low poly 3D model on blender, animate it, and trace the frames on aseprite or krita. So hopefully we'll see many more games with this graphic quality. Going 100% hand drawn animation like Skullgirls and Cuphead is still way more labor intensive, and if justly pay way more expensive than 3D, yeah.

Well those animations took a long time for SNK to make, and they didn't reallly make their money back from KOF12 or 13 sadly.

you should check out Guardian Heroes for the Sega Saturn. One of a kind and still one of the best imo. SF input beat em up style, semi rpg semi final fight. I think you'll enjoy it. One of my personal favorites

This game reminds me of the Mega Drive version of Yuyu Hakusho the fighting game (not the RPG). The plane shifting mechanic was first implemented in that game as well as Guardian Heroes and Panzer Bandit afterwards (but those were beat em ups). This should be the new mechanic used in Smash Bros; in order to make a fresh take on the series (plus the low roster that game will have at launch, will not be comparable to the current Smash; so they need to do something new anyway).

that's a fair criticism. I like that it's trying to do so many things at once because, since it's a very innovative title that has been little explored, throwing as many things possible at the wall and seeing which sticks will help accelerate figuring out what works and what doesn't. Maybe it won't be the most fun thing to play, but I'd love to give the game as much feedback as possible.
