@billykyle Bah, the Mavic 3 Enterprise is the "Phantom 5"... There's nothing a Phantom chassis can do that the Mavic chassis can't do. The only possible "improvement" would be to have the landing gear retract like a mini Inspire 3 to allow the camera to rotate 360 degrees. Frankly, a software update that implements "headless mode" or brings back "Tap to Fly" on the Mavic 3 would facilitate that as well.

This is great tool that could be used in the US. Our track network is very old and could benefit from this software. I would like to see other drones platforms be able to utilize the software. It could also be a 3rd party business opportunity where you could contract with the rail roads to accomplish this task which could be cost affective for them and beneficial for those pilots with drone businesses.

They need to start using some logic in waivers. The potential risks of a single drone (flying over rail owned property) vs the safety issues of a derailment. We also had the East Palestine derailment not far from here (Pittsburgh) and the chemical impact was immense. I often think about the high volume of rail traffic that goes right through here given the large population.

Still flying a P4P for aerial imaging. Not sure why DJI does not do a firmware update for remote id. Just the V2 version for some reason. Sigh

It's cool way to inspect the track but there needs to be software that can be used on a drone to inspect the cars when a wayside detector goes off ex a tanker car

Since your flight time is 30-50 minutes and you can't fly out of the range of site that really limits the use of drones.

Yup. Current technology and regulations are definitely a limitation here.

While I do love the tech, these tracks used to be inspected by rail crews before the railroads went to "precision railroading" and laid off a TON of people. That not only cut safety on the tracks but got rid of lots of well paying union jobs in remote areas of the country (both in the US and Canada). These cuts happened in conjunction with the class 1 railroads making record profits year on year, many of them seeing the biggest profits in their histories. The tech is cool, but it's filling a slot that was previously done by people who are now out of work.

I think a good way to look at this technology is as an aid to the current staff already working. There will be a need for human workers to maintain the drones, look at the data collected, and fix problem areas. This will let them work smarter, not harder.
