This video is part of a sponsored series with Princess Cruises.
When given the opportunity to tour any part of the Discovery Princess in 2022, Adam chose the engine room, and a fascination with cruise-ship engineering was born. So it's not surprising Tested jumped at the chance to chronicle the building of Princess Cruises' newest ship -- the Sun Princess -- at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy. One of the defining features of this ship is its glass dome and sphere. But ... how can rigid spheres and domes remain watertight on a ship, which flexes while at sea? Well. Here's how.

Not really for many reasons: that skyscraper in London was parabolic so the reflective surfaces of the glass concentrated the sunlight on one arguably large but still one point, while the dome even if they were perfeclty reflecting or working as a lens (thing that i doubt) being spheric scatter the light on a larger area, that's what's called spherical aberration; but mainly, by the looks of it, that is aluminized glass so only part of the light gets in and being flat panels there is no lensing and it ges pretty much stright through

Glasgow’s Kibble Palace was upgraded from its 1800’s wood structure to a metal structure which, did not experience the same temp swings did have its own challenges. problem is that theres alot of maintenance in keeping something like this operational, and a floating community is unlikely to be able to produce that much profit, the only thing they can really do is tourism or office space, but both of them will end up having a fairly long travel time from shore (where everything else is), so it ends up being just a niche hotel for tourism, and inconvenient office space

Hey Adam, underneath the Dome I noticed what look like rubber dampers. Is that what I actually saw? If that's the case that's ingenious, allowing the Dome to flex somewhat separately from the ship. I hope that you can confirm, however at the same time I'm disappointed that you didn't look at that feature in the video.

I'm not so much concerned about what these huge ships do to the oceans, but what they do to the communities they dock at. Dropping thousands of tourists into a small town with a four hour deadline creates a mess.

@@dakotareid1566 I don't disagree. But I'm a sailor, and the cruisers often hit the. cruise ship ports on days when the cruise ships are absent and marvel at what wonderful places they are, when they aren't flooded with tourists. The question, though, is how many of those quaint resort restaurants would be there, if it weren't for the cruise ship custom? There aren't, and there never will be, enough cruising sailors to keep such businesses running.

Hmm… Are the domes there to keep the pterodactyls in? Because that went well? This is only the second time Adam lost me, first that robo-dog that seems to have been abandoned and now cruise ships(really?) Just ask the people of Venice and all the other cities, ports towns that get invaded by these (amazing) giant structures, but to no obvious benefit to the local economy? Not sure that the world needs cruise ships, but hey Adam's non-standard hard hat is still cool.

Yea, I imagine/hope that the engineers learned from the mistakes that plagued Chicago’s State of Illinois building (a/k/a the James R. Thompson Center). Opened in 1985, the uninsulated (🤦‍♀️) glass curtain wall created a horrific terrarium effect in Chicago’s summers and a heating nightmare in our winters. Google will ultimately control the building after the developer who bought it in 2022 invests millions to overhaul it.

Ceramic infrared blocking coatings have come a long way, untinted glass or just a carbon tinted film would likely make it into a big greenhouse but modern coatings can make it feel like the sun isn't even there.

@gaerekxenos
@gaerekxenos 10 ай бұрын
I think there needs to be a higher refraction index for that to happen. I doubt the glass used is thick enough for them to gather enough rays to make a considerable enough temperature difference to fry people. Plus they double pane it, which lessens the refraction effect compared to if they put a solid pane of the combined total thickness of the glass and the empty space in between the panes

That is pretty cool indeed, and yeah, i did always wonder why there's so much to do on a cruise, when you can also have a great time looking at the view. Of course there is also a lot of open ocean, but still, weather still happens. I hope it's not going to be a giant architectural failure, because i can see a lot going wrong, but even better if they make it happen.

*We've had "Green washing" ... now we have "Adam Washing".* Cruise ships are unbelievably polluting, using the worst type of heavy fuel oils. Want to take a tour of the deck while under power ? You'll experience some of the worst air quality you ever will ... literally walking through the exhaust haze. And what's worse, the ship companies think nothing of running the engines while in port, polluting the city they are visiting ( hence a few European ports have banned the practice ). Your greenhouse gas footprint will be terribly high going on a cruise. And they spoil the port cities they visit. The Netherlands is starting to ban them. Disgorging thousands and thousands of tourists upon a city for an 8 hour stay. In time these ships will be banned. Do your bit and boycott them. *Adam .... forget the great tech blah blah. These things are not part of a global climate emergency solution.*

@@modestmousecoloredperson Granted, it sounds extreme. But it caught your attention - that was the point. Really, it all comes down to personal choice. Fly less, use public transport more ( if you can ), swerve cruises, support investment in renewable energy, if you're a celeb like Adam, think deeply before endorcing things that pollute like cruises. Nobody has all the answers, but it's a full on clime emergency. it's here. That too can sound "kinda insane". But it's what the UN, WHO and scientists are telling us. Anyway, peace and love !

@@modestmousecoloredperson No, you don't understand the concept of bait and switch. And I don't appreciate being misrepresented as lying. The climate emergency is here. I presented a full bore defence of not supporting the polluting cruise industry. Yes, it can sound extreme. It is. Wake up. Yes, that is me suggesting you wake up. And don't backtrack : your initial comment was about eco-minded comments sounding extreme, not people-telling-people how to live being extreme. Nobody is telling anyone what to do in real terms. That only works in real terms if you have the power to make them. In colloquial terms - the terms we use every day, telling people to wake up, not backtrack and to be more concerned about the environment is just that : colloquialism. Do what you like. Adam can do what he likes. But at least you're doing it in knowledge that it's not the best for the environment. I don't have kids, so in one sense I shouldn't give a flying f??? as I won't be around to see the worst of what will happen. But we all have to pull together ( and no, that's not an instruction, it's another colloquialism. Try switching off the internet/ tv/ radio so that you don't think that every colloquial term is a direction to do something or else. You're not a slave after all. Peace and love.

Is the focal length of the dome going to help heat the pool? It's basically a huge lens.
@irascheer5868
@irascheer5868 9 ай бұрын
I t is not really a "lens". The light-bending power of a lens is due to the thickness of the glass. This is not solid glass, but two thin sheets of glass, so the glass will have very little refractive power. Furthermore, the glass is not curved, but rather flat sheets. There are many ships which have glass-roofed areas.

No focusing power at all, since the glass is all flat sheets. There are many ships which have glass-roofed areas. Flat glass (like a window pane) has no ability to "focus" light.
