Horror, suspense, and thriller movies have always spooked us since time immemorial and leave us wondering whether there are actually any demons under our beds and whether we should open the door to the cellar or hide in the attic during a game of hide and seek. And if the French decide to make it, then brace yourselves, my friends, because it sure is going to leave shivers down your spine! I am going to talk about a similar movie in the video today.
Written and directed by Jean-Baptiste Andrea and his wife, Fabrice Canepa, Dead End is a minimalistic French horror and thriller film starring Lin Shaye, Ray Wise, Mick Cain, Alexandra Holden, and Amber Smith, which was released in 2003. It tells the story of a typical American dysfunctional family who is pursued by a mystery hearse and a woman clad in white on a never-ending road in the middle of a forest on a routine journey on Christmas Eve. The path turns dark and perilous with the arrival of their new passengers, and the family's numbers quickly fall in a sequence of seemingly related, brutal roadside incidents. The road appears to go on forever, and hell becomes very real.

Just watched Dead End because of this video, and I have to agree with the majority of comments: it's more like "Twilight Zone meets Blair Witch on the road", than "Lovecraftian." Other than that it's pretty good! One of those rare horror movies that hinges on suspense and feelings of dread and unease, instead of gore and jump scares!

It mentions all the themes you find in Lovecraft´s short stories like irrational behavior, entities, seeing dead people, etc. But the confusing part is it feels ancient and modern at the same time and not that much like cosmic horror films.
@Kenshiro3rd
@Kenshiro3rd 2 жыл бұрын
@@Yatukih_001 same can be said of horror works predating him. Thing is the movie didn’t have anything uniquely Lovecraftian, such as ancient alien gods, or literally inconceivable cosmic horrors whose mere existence can shatter planets and drives entire civilizations to ruin with their awareness of it.

It is a good movie. I watched it last night. It is definitely not the most terrifying Lovecraftian horror film though. In fact I did not see what was Lovecraftian about it. The ending was very predictable. I told my wife what the ending probably would be when their car almost hit the other car and I was right. Still, I would recommend the movie.
@juan0808

While not Lovecraftian there are some elements in the movie that resemble cosmic horror. The idea of a mysterious force trapping the characters and their slow descent into madness. The problems is that the near crash at the beginning makes it too predictable.

@@nonh1 Some of what it means is the discovery of realising how insignificant we are in the face of the cosmos and the mind shattering repercussions if we truly delve deeper into the realms of the unknowable. The inability to rationalise away the gnawing sense of dread that you are never able to go back to the before, perhaps there was never a before to begin with. Anyway enough about my current predicament as Buzz Lightyear says after he sees beyond the dark side of the moon 'To insanity and beyond'.

"It tells the story of a typical American dysfunctional family..." There you have it, Lovecraftian. 😂 But I totaly know what you mean, a lot of movies/games & other stuff get's an "Lovecraftian or Cosmic Horror" stamp on it, though it's not. To be fair, sometimes there is something in there that are also present in Lovecraftian & Cosmic Horror, like Body Horror, Existential Horror, Paranoia, Alternate Realities, stuff like that, but as we know this doesn't mean it's Lovecraftian & Cosmic Horror. About this movie, never watched it, looks very Stephen King-ish, in a bad way.

It is Lovecraftian in that it blends time, distance and place while the main characters reel in incomprehensibility at their circumstances. What they don't show you is the most disturbing part of the movie that they only hint at. It is a brilliant low budget classic. The black car is a very unsettling apparition we never understand exactly except that it is something akin to a funeral procession.

Bought the VHS from this sales because it seemed good and boy did I enjoy the ride. I disagree about the young actress though, she was quite effective and conveyed legitimate shock and affection etc The claustrophobic elements always make for great fiction and this certainly had that. The near sci-fi lone straight isolated road (the idea of it being thought of being for military usage was fantastic). The excellent acting of the two older actors did indeed make for a thrill for they made this truly dramatic instead of a cheap ride.

To be clear I fucking LOVE this movie it is fucking badass one of the best horror movies ever. It's also pretty much a comedy. But I have to disagree with you that this is Lovecraftian. Lovecraftian is NOT super natural. It deals with REAL creatures and things that go bump in the night as such you would never find a story like this where people are trapped in a dream sequence with the road repeating itself in an endless hopeless loop. Love this film. It's NOT Lovecraftian. To me the best Lovecraftian film I have ever seen is The Birdcage. You're never gonna get putting Lovecraftian creatures on film they aren't necessarily going to scare everyone. But the Birdcage gets around that by NOT showing the creatures but showing the effect they have on one's mind. Brilliant if you ask me. Cheers and good luck to your channel!
