Kevin and Tom build a new subfloor. Richard hunts for an old clawfoot tub. Tom demonstrates how to check porch level and build a hip roof. Kevin learns about a job training program in Baltimore.

Kevin arrives to find Tommy working on fixing the old addition subfloor. When he first toured the house, Tommy noticed a 3/4-inch elevation change between the dining room and the family room. They also need to restructure the corner of the floor where the new wood-burning stove will go.
Meanwhile, Richard travels to an architectural salvage yard in New Hampshire to meet the homeowners and their designer, Chloe Rideout, as they shop for the right tub. Liz and Joe want a very traditional look for their new master bath. Chloe thinks an antique claw-foot tub should be the focal point.
Back in Newton, the front porch can use a lot of love. Tommy shows the apprentices how far out of level it is, and he's coming up with a plan to fix it.
Kevin travels to the rough neighborhoods of Baltimore to find a Generation NEXT success story. It's called Project JumpStart, and it helps turn recovering drug addicts and nonviolent offenders into job candidates for the construction trades.
Back at the project house, the architect has drawn a hip roof over the new garage. Tommy teaches the apprentices how to calculate the cuts needed to make the rafters.

All you have to do is go to a local trade union hall (carpenters, electricians, pipe fitters) and sign up. You will take some aptitude tests and if you pass you will start as a 1st year apprentice with decent pay and health insurance. You will work at the trade during the day and go to school at least 2 nights a week for 5 years.

@@thomasdragosr.841 Not all communities have a local trade union that provide training. Some of the people here who were recently released from jail, if would be more difficult to join traditional unions as some wouldn't take ex-offenders.

Great story. I have an 18-year old nephew who's a high functioning austic person. He works p/t in a grocery store. I'd love nothing more than for him to learn a construction trade.

Being from Baltimore and seeing something like Project Jumpstart is really inspiring to see and you root for those guys! We need more Project Jumpstarts all across america but am very proud of those men to change their lives for the better and better themselves. Bravo!

@@doylestownscummy2323 I live in California where there are so many more hoops to jump through to be "your own boss". You could certainly do it as a hobby or volunteering, but you can't just open a business willy nilly out here man. Ain't nothing "free" in this country

A bit sad watching this... the young man here, Austin passes away shortly after that season ended. I believe he passed sometime in 2018. RIP. 🙏

Ryan Kearney yes, very sad - he was fresh out of high school and had a great future ahead of him. He died of a pre-existing medical condition while on a trip to Orlando for a Home Show with TOH. My heart went to my mouth at that part, unsupported, not fixed and single spanning, the last time I saw someone stand on a piece like that it buckled and the guy fell 10ft to floor below. Never stand on unfixed decking

They are 100% right of what employers need. It isn’t someone that is skilled in the position, skill can be taught, but someone that can show up everyday on time with the right attitude; that can’t be taught.

Traits to look for: 1. Optimistic warmth (genuine kindness, thoughtfulness, and a sense that the glass is always at least half full); 2. Intelligence (not just “smarts” but rather an insatiable curiosity to learn for the sake of learning); 3. Work ethic (a natural tendency to do something as well as it can possibly be done); 4. Empathy (an awareness of, care for, and connection to how others feel and how your actions make others feel); 5. Self-awareness (an understanding of what makes you tick) 6. Integrity (a natural inclination to be accountable for doing the right thing with honesty and superb judgment).

I love this program for helping people learn the trades. I started when I was pretty young as most did right out of high school. Running crews and then becoming a general manager of a contractor's business. Everything they say in this program is really true show up.... work hard ...be honest ...and you'll get buy really well. I grew up in the mountains of Arizona so our summers were beautiful and not too hot. I started learning to frame in The valley in Phoenix Arizona in late may. It was so hot but I just kept showing up the winters were great and I had a good living the rest of my life.

You can't mix lvl with sawn lumber joists like that, the sawn lumber will shrink in width but the lvl won't, then you end up with a hump in the floor above the lvl. Learned this the hard way a long time ago.

I was very lucky to start my career doing conventional roofs. My trainer showed me how to put rafters on Long sawhorses crown down. We would then cut a birdsmouth to the right degree in death. And then we would Mark out the lengths of the rafters individually on the bottom. We would then flip them over left and right. We had a pattern made up from a 1x6.that we could finish out the marking of the seat cut and the angle at the top. We could cut every rafter and hip on the ground before ever getting up on the walls.

Everyone deserves a second chance when they screw up. In the USA we don't always do a good job of extending that courtesy to ALL of our people. Programs like Project Jump Start show that if you value a person's humanity and are willing to invest in them, even after they've made some serious mistakes, they can not only change but actually go on to live a fulfilling and successful life. No one deserves to be thrown away, but we do it all the time in America.

I love that they have that program in Baltimore. But living in Columbia and most of my my work as an electrician is IN D.C. and virginia, I also see that there is NOOOO work in Baltimore. You drive into d.c. and see 10 cranes within minutes. You drive into Baltimore and see people nodding out at crosswalks. It's such a shame that the political leaders of Baltimore have let it fall so far.

Baltimore looks the way it does because corruption in government and industry, with black families starting from a disadvantage from the day they are born. Maybe if corporations like Bethlehem Steel didn't fail to properly manage their business and stay competitive, there would still be good jobs in Baltimore for its residents. Have you ever watched "The Wire" on HBO? Read the conservative Brookings Institute's report "Examing the Black-White Wealth Gap": "At $171,000, the net worth of a typical white family is nearly ten times greater than that of a Black family ($17,150) in 2016. Gaps in wealth between Black and white households reveal the effects of accumulated inequality and discrimination, as well as differences in power and opportunity that can be traced back to this nation’s inception. The Black-white wealth gap reflects a society that has not and does not afford equality of opportunity to all its citizens."
