The NextGen car has produced some incredible racing at tracks like Kansas, Charlotte, and Atlanta, but has struggled at short tracks and road courses. Kevin Harvick understands the nuances of what it takes to change the car as a whole, but simply put, he feels the cars should have more horsepower. Watch his take on the video.

Kevin is spot on with higher entry speeds into turns and having to wait or apply the throttle differently. Another 100-150 horsepower (or more) would be welcomed by most drivers and fans.

I remember those just absolutely insane 1000 horsepower monsters that used to scream around the tracks. I don't know if we should push them that hard again, but imagine one of these next gen cars with 850-875 horsepower thundering off into the corner at Kansas or screaming down into 3 and 4 at Martinsville making the tires absolutely question why they were ever created as they gripped into the track with whatever they could muster. That could potentially get us back to the old "twisted sister" days with the added saftey of today. That could make for some absolutely incredible racing.

@RyTrapp0 8 ай бұрын
@@VladimirBlarp Adding horsepower doesn't fix the problems caused by having too much tire. All of this tire(they made them nearly 1.5" wider than the old 15s, even though they pulled a ton of HP out of them) is the reason why switching to a softer compound doesn't make them fall off sooner - they're SO damn big, they have SO damn much thermal mass that they can't overheat them to make them fall off. Horsepower may help wear out the rears sooner... but these are also professional race cars drivers with real throttle control, so I wouldn't go banking on a drastic difference in rear tire wear just because you may assume that they're going to being doing burnouts out of every corner. Still aren't going to wear out the fronts either of course. They could ballast the cars up to 4000lbs to put more heat into those 14.3" worth of tire at each corner, but I don't believe anyone really thinks that's a good idea. Maybe take a ton of aero away(like seems to be popular), but that's pretty sketchy to rely so heavily on pure mechanical grip on the high speed ovals. It's lot harder to recover a push up truck without downforce on the nose; it's a lot harder to recover a slide mid-corner without rear downforce - would likely be more cars into the wall, which no one wants. It'll be a painful switch for everyone involved - but they just need to rip the band-aid off sooner than later, because there aren't any shortcuts to fixing having too much tire. More horsepower is probably needed(unless they took like 3" of tire away or something drastic that actually paired with their HP target) too, but it isn't fixing the problems caused by the tire.

You don't want hard tires. Hard tires allow for consistent lap times throughout a run with Iittle to no wear which keeps the cars all running the same rough lap times and makes for follow the leader. You want a softer tire that starts fast and falls off hard, with high HP so that its put in the drivers hands to save their stuff. This will lead to a bigger lap time variance which equals passing.

@@nomadman5288 I mean, we know it’s a factor because when they got rid of that rule the cars started making way more grip and going faster. Fans and drivers have been complaining about the continual reductions in horsepower for years and nascar remains tone deaf. Big shock. In the last 4 years, I went from being a diehard fan, never missing a race, spending thousands on merch, and race tickets to barely watching. And with Kevin retiring, I doubt I’ll watch a single race next year unless the Steve and Steve show get their fingers out of their asses and start listening. Their sole focus has been trying to find ways to bunch these cars up at the expense of driver talent input. Obviously, looking at the tv ratings, I’m not the only one that feels that way.

I stopped being dedicated to watching nascar consistently the day of summer Atlanta in 2022. Yes my boy Chase won but it’s not been the same since this next gen showed up. Then I went on vacation and all of this other stuff spent more time with family and missed even most of the coke 600. I forced myself to watch xfinity at Las Vegas this fall and fell asleep. I fall asleep in alot of races. I fell asleep watching fall Daytona too. I still love the sport but I enjoy playing it more on iRacing than watching it on tv but watching it in person is great if I ignore the empty seats and pretend it’s the golden age.

FINALLY! A driver comes out on the lack of actual team-to-driver(s) communication. It's such a big gap that is unknown, yet, obvious. Overall, I appreciate the open to change of upper echelon NASCAR folks today. The era of putting a lid on it under Brian was non-productive and becoming a thing of the past. While they seem to point at cost within the P&L of equipment for teams and manufacturers, for some reason they don't look at P&L from a fan, viewer or driver perspective (IMHO). Where the "P" tips the balance. Odd. They want to keep this package appealing to other manufacturers (My #1 guess here is Honda) they also need to keep the package a marketable product. Crazy balance and transition for the sport.

Kevin is got a good head on his shoulders and I think he's going to add a lot to the booth and I pray Nascar will take notes and take action to improve the action on the track. It needs to go back to how it was in the early days where driver's had to fight to race an ill handling car. Driver's need to be able to pass and not stay bunched together. I personally wish they would do away with the stage racing. I don't know of but one driver that might be able to race a straight 400-600 miles/laps that's racing now. I'm not a big fan of his but he would be up to the challenge. There's 3 tracks specifically I would love to see how the driver's would hold up going from start to finish and have to strategically decide when to pit and race non-stop flag to flag. That's Bristol, Charlotte and Darlington. North Wilkesboro would be great too.

I'm not sure why I don't hear more about adjusting the size of the tire as the fix. In moving to the Next Gen tire, the width increased enough that it was almost equivalent to adding a 5th tire to the car. Taking the width back to the previous width would slow the mid corner speeds in a similar way to adding HP. I'm sure the crew chiefs would also like to see the wheel size maybe come down to 17in, as it would give a little spring rate back to the tire and allow for a little more adjustability. Just my thoughts.

I got heated when I found out they were dropping the horsepower to 750 from 900+, I got frustrated when it STAYED that way, and I got out when they dropped it again to 550. The joy of full-on NASCAR Cup cars USED to be that they were a complete handful. Now they make less power than a Mustang GT with headers and a tune, and it's made them predictable. The cars are tight because they can't spin up the rears as easily to correct the balance. They're aero-dependent because they don't have the power to make throttle control a relevant skill on corner exit. The tires aren't wearing out because they're under less stress in general. Here's an easy fix to a problem NASCAR themselves caused by not heeding the results of the DIRECT COMPARISON they made during the 2015 season: TAKE THE DAMN PLATES OFF.

I didnt realise the cars were down that much power, but Ive thought for a while on the road coarses the cars should have more power it would make those races more exciting. But the points Kevin brings up about power are great points.. Bring back the Power. Nascar only making 550hp?? A stock much GT makes 460... Helcats 700 or so.. Come on NAScar bring back the 850hp motors lets get some...

Hellcats have forced induction. But I do agree: NASCAR needs to lay off with all of their stupid, limiting rules and allow more HP back into these engines. But what the hell does my say have........I turned my back on nascar cup racing years ago. And I was a diehard fan from the very 1st start to finish televised race back in the 70's. They've really ruined this sport in every way they could come up with.

The part of all of this that boggles my mind is NASCAR sitting here for a decade saying they want more manufacturers and that's why we have less power. Well I don't see anyone knocking NASCAR's door down, and the cars are basically in a middle ground between GT3 cars and Aussie V8 Supercars and not putting on a good enough show to attract manufacturers. In the end, do what got you popular in the first place. Big power, hard to drive... That's what a NASCAR Stockcar needs to be.

How to fix nascar: Scrap the next gen add xfinity car to cup with some changes to make them cup ready 900 hp everywhere 750 hp on superspeedways Full season points format Numbers back in the middle Better marketing They want the future stuff run bio fuels, electric garbage is not the answer and will kill the sport.

@@drewhalloran9 First off, the way the industry is going, the best thing NASCAR can do is kill off the Cup Series that costs $50 mil a year to run in it's current form, and do a consolidation. Second, Make it the Xfinity Cup Series with a budget cap of $12mil because that's what top teams are currently spending... THAT will reign in costs, allow for one company to sponsor a car all year long which helps build brand identity, and as good as the racing is in Xfinity, don't change ANYTHING about the cars. I mean they're already 700hp which is more than the Cup cars currently are, and you're not making them spend more on engines... then do the full points format and fix the numbers and you've got something worth paying attention to...

If NASCAR was is charge of baseball, the baseball would be the size of a basketball, the bat would be a 3/4” inch diameter titanium bat and the they would run the bases backward. Then after they pissed all the diehard fans off after completely changing the game that is timeless and never needed changed, they would introduce a football into the mix.

HP is Not the Only Fix. More Narrow Tire & little to no Down force on short tracks will Help tremendously. The more narrow tire isn't An OEM problem it A good year problem. Trust. Science LESS grip will make the Cars slower& harder to drive. That's what Fans& NASCAR want. A car That blows the Tires off if Ya can't control the HP you Have with the Go pedal

Its rare to hear a driver say something is too easy to drive. NASCAR managed to build a car that drives better than its predecessor, and behaves differently because you don't have to tune around built in inefficiency. teams clearly wanted more power even from early testing because the cars could handle it. I think the delay in giving this HP comes from the fact that if you give an inch, teams will take a mile. once that extra HP comes there is no telling how quick and potentially dangerous the cars can get on any given track.

I don’t think increasing horsepower will fix short tracks. It’s more aero flaws although lower horsepower seems to amplify those aero problems on short tracks & road courses.

Next gen. Big tech. Analytics. Computerized this and that....screw all that stuff. Give me back carbs, more air, and horsepower. We don't want a reinvented IROC series. Racing was never better than it was in the 80's and 90's...and not just because the Intimidator was on the track. The only thing better today IMO is the safety of the cars and the Chase format. I was against the Chase format for a while but have come around on that. But the racing itself, the speeds, adjustability, "gray areas", etc, made the racing so fun back then. And the driver personalities were better too. You had real feuds, bad blood, and drivers who spoke their mind, not the PC "hope I'm as fast as Xfinity 10G" corporate robot lines. BTW, Xfinity sucks as does their service, which is some call center in the Indo Pacific.

I think they should lighten up the short track cars for better handling. These things are built like tanks and if they aren`t out of control as far as speed it might make for more exciting racing.Faster tracks? Stick with the battle wagons.

Speaking of improving the car, since MOST of the parts are the same, and there seems to be a weak link in the rear toe link, why doesn't NASCAR let the manufacturer redesign the lower arm and rear hub. I have seen it done in RC cars to eliminate the rear toe link. The lower arm has 2 pivot points to let the rear hub pivot when the suspension travels up and down, but eliminates the toe link.
