Best live performance ever. No autotune, no, jumping around, just a little Mic. All you had was a bobby voice and that was all you needed. He’s a countertenor with an unbelievable range that covers half the piano and he feels his music. He was a true musician not just a singer.

This has been considered by many to be the greatest (live) television performance of all time. Never has an orchestra and a singer be so well in sync. Then when the NBC Studio Orchestra and Counter Tenor the late great "Bobby Hatfield" of the "Righteous Brothers" performed Alex Norths & Hy Zaret's (1955) "Unchained Melody' 58 years ago in (1965). On the Andy Williams Show. Host Andy Williams said it best "Beautiful"...Awesome!

I had heard that when Bobby found out how terrific the acoustics in the studio were, he decided to take advantage of that and really soar on the ending. Combined with the great orchestra, this version is the most moving of any one out there. Thanks for the nice reaction.

The song has been covered by hundreds of singers. The studio version was used in the film 'Ghost and was good but this live version is stupendous. No auto tune or gimmicks just pure talent. He was suffering with a cold, his mother was in the audience watching him sing professionally for the first time and he suffered with stage fright. The duo you were thinking of were Robson & Jerome.

This was written as the theme of 1955 prison movie Unchained. Opera singer Todd Duncan sang it in the movie. It has since been recorded over 1,500 times by more than 670 artists. Bobby's solo is the gold standard. It was a big hit in 1965 and again in 1990 when the studio version was used in Ghost. This live version from the Andy Williams Show in 1965 is considered by many to be even better than the studio version. I remember sitting in front of our tv with my Mom and Grandma watching this. We all fell in love with Bobby Hatfield that night.

Bobby had a way of delivering his blue eyed soul magic with is phenomenal voice every single time. I love how he 'plays' his vowels like vocal instruments. This live performance is even better than the studio cut which charted twice. Bill was joking when he said he didn't think it would be a hit. He produced it and it was released as the B side of a 45 and DJ's began playing it. We boomers were spoiled with real talent and so happy to see it revived by younger generations. RIP Bobby Lee Hatfield your beautiful voice and soulful delivery are greatly missed. 1940-2003.

Bobby Hatfield....no one else like him. A counter tenor, he had a 5 octave range ......no falsetto. This was his 1965 live tv version where he showed us the wide range of his vocals. His original recording is also beautiful, but a bit different. The story is he wanted to record it one more time and was told it was perfect as is. This performance is live on the Andy Williams show, one of the biggest and most watched shows of that time with a viewing audience of well over 1 million. Bobby was very nervous, had a cold and his mother was in the audience (watching him professionally perform for the first time.) Bobby nailed it! That's why he's smiling at the end. I never get tired of hearing this song or watching new people react to it or looking at Bobby. He was gorgeous and had the most beautiful voice. This song came from a little known 1955 prison movie titled Unchained. It was just a little song in the movie. Before Bobby performed it, it was sung by 2 other men. The most popular version, before Bobby blew it out of the water, was done by Al Hibbler. Since then this has become the most covered song ever with over 670 covers. Even Elvis covered it. It was one of the last songs he recorded and sung at his last concert. Bobby's recorded version has been used in movies and in a couple of commercials. Most notably the song was featured in the 1990's movie "Ghost", which gave the song a second life on the music charts. So glad you reacted to this .

Bobby was the one who raised the "I need your love" up an octave (I think!). For earlier versions, watch Sam Cooke and Roy Hamilton, both on KZfaq, both from 1955. The prison movie the song came from "Unchained" is also on KZfaq with black opera singer Todd Duncan singing the song.

The best ever live vocal 'how to put auto tune and voice shaping to shame' it was just his voice and ability. Just a unique rendition by Bobby better than the studio version in every way which I understand he did in one or two takes from a conversation. Bill did not turn up to the studio to record it so that is why Bobby was the only voice singing it, the fortune of fate.

I’ve been listening to this since i watched this on the Andy Williams Show back in 1965. Covered by more than 670 artists but this is the gold standard by the late great Bobby Hatfield. Then it came back in the movie scene from Ghost in 1990. The Righteous Brothers to me are the greatest duo of all time. They also have the most played song on radio and TV in the 20th Century You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling. Also Soul and Inspiration, Rock And Roll Heaven and many more glad you enjoyed it and thanks.

You mean you've heard too many people butcher this song in Bar karaoke lol. His parents were in the audience ...his mom had never heard him sing professionally. he nailed it for her...the studio recording is nowhere near this performance level...Bobby Hatfield's 's performance here is for a all-time...he's 25 here,. He died at age 63 in a hotel on tour with Bill [the other "Righteous Brother" in 2003. in Kalamazoo MI. Before a performance. I almost bought tickets to the show because it's only 50 minutes from my house. I didn't, was too busy. I cried the next morning when I heard the news, I grew up on this music, and was a music teacher. It is a miracle they taped this performance and SAVED it, and people are STILL discovering it. it's like from the grave he is showing young people what great music is. Good lord this was 58 years ago!!!!

The background song in the Ghost movie when they are doing pottery is Unchained Melody, and it was sung by Bobby Hatfield. However, that version did not include the crescendo finale (probably because that would have detracted from the movie). It was also digitally controlled (similar to the recorded version) which was not as good as the Andy Williams show live performance.

You should listen to the version from 1955 by the great *Roy Hamilton* , it is the version that inspired the Righteous Brothers's version. The Righteous Brothers also recorded a couple other songs that were hits for Hamilton about 10 years before, including *Ebb Tide* and *You'll Never Walk Alone* .

Compare this live version from the Andy Williams show to the studio version which we listened to on the radio back in the day. Bobby Hatfield really put himself into this one. The runs tend to be more extended, and the close is massively better. In the studio version, he holds the end note for an extended time. It sounds really good, but here he had that unforgettable cascading crescendo. Unforgettable. (sorry, that was Nat King Cole. Sometimes I get so confused. 😉)

At first sight (hearing) the song doesn’t seem difficult, voice-wise. But as you watch Bobby sing it you realize that the range calls for a smooth, even mid-voice, resonant low notes and a free, aerial top range - some say it’s countertenor territory, but I disagree: 1950s-60s French lyric tenors (like Luis Mariano or Alain Vanzo) often heard on radio or stage sounded just as sweet in their highest registers. What I particularly like about Bobby’s singing is that he never mangles words: listen to how he snaps consonants to point the rythmic beats in each phrase. Not a word is lost.

Of course you dind’t recognize this version. After recording twice with Bill as producer , Bobby asked to sing again because He could do better. Bill refused and said no you can’t ! So Bobby had to wait to a live performance and changed the lyrics in the end and gave his own taste all along the music. He owned it ! That’s why he became the unique and unforgetable solo most known and played and gain rewards
