Welcome to the "Chan Stan" club, our focus is gently trying to make Chan eat and sleep more regularly, and let him know that he is loved and can be more "self-centered" when needed... While also cheering every time we see or hear reports of him sleeping and constantly praying he doesn't have a massive burn out ;D

Chan worries me a lot actually. There are so many things he does or doesn't do that are red flags to me, because of my own experiences and mistakes. I wish for him to have someone to help him deal with all of the stress and responsibilities, before he (hopefully doesn't) crashes. Glad to see you doing your reactions again, Shawn. Take your time and rest, if you need to.

Seungmin cried three times in front of Stay this year. I think he is "mentally strong" in a healthy way. He doesn't seem to stress too much about things out of his control. He knows his priorities and pursues them without comparing himself to anyone other then his yesterday self. But at the same time, he seems very much in touch with his emotions. Honestly, I think becoming a better singer opened up something in him. His emotional delivery in every song is insane. I don't think he would have been able to sing pain as well as he does if he ran away from it all the time. Chan is another story. There is something he seems to be hiding from. I hope he'll confornt it before it devours him. His need to deny himself... I worry that it doesn't come from a healthy place.

this episode was very revealing... (we're all lowkey and highkey worried about chan's mental health in this fandom im afraid 😔) its so frustrating they think hiding emotions is what make them strong and reliable, i wish them (specially chan) could cry and let himself be vulnerable. being emotionally mature to express your emotions is what makes you strong imo i hope they have good psychologists and they visit them often

If they don’t have one, I would gladly help them out! But I’m all seriousness, I do hope he has someone to talk with. 💙💙 Hiding emotions is such a societal expectation for men and it’s really sad to see, especially in my profession.

Join team . I think Chan himself admits he's changed and grown a lot since SKZ began, and he does seem to have much healthier sleeping and living habits now, but you're definitely not alone in sometimes getting that slight anxiety of, I hope he has someone really trustworthy to talk to. Whenever the other guys seriously talk about Chan they always sound slightly awed and like they're aware he carries more than they ever see but they just do their best to be there for him in what way they can. Seungmin I always feel is somewhat similar to Chan in temperament, he also has that lowkey leader quality if you ever see them split into different groups. But Seungmin will often be the one who makes sure Chan is offered food if Chan's busy serving others or tries to sort of look out for Chan whilst Chan is looking out for everyone else. If you ever watch the survival show (which is not an easy watch especially when you already know and love them now) I think you see the origin of this 'strong mind' thing. Because Chan picked and formed SKZ himself, when the group were selected to debut and became rookies they basically were then examined and tested (and the process was filmed to build expectation and and early fanbase) because noone in the company had been involved in their formation (which pretty much never happens) so they were pretty strict on checking every member should be in the group. Chan was suddenly leading this group where if they failed certain evaluations members would be cut, so that member would fail to debut and no longer be in their team (they even had to move out the dorms they were sharing). And members did get cut. Most of SKZ were still at school during the time, Chan was like 19/20 and when members got cut he heavily blamed himself. He was hyper focused on managing their practices and individual skills. There is a horrible moment towards the end of the show after they lose a member where Chan essentially confesses that he's still distraught (as are they all) but he feels like it would be selfish for him to indulge in that emotion when the others need him to be there so he can ensure they at least debut. I think Chan had a very dark time for a while when he was younger, but he's stated himself that the members helped change that for him and saved him. He has grown so much, but I think old habits die hard, and I suspect Chan is reluctant to let people in too close because he, like Changbin, struggles with the duality of being there to comfort others whilst also accepting being comforted. Hopefully all these things will continue to improve as they keep growing and maturing.

Survival show is trauma show for me...I mean, we have them here and now as they have grown up, improved and perfected their craft (gotta admit they were lack of so much things back then, but they had the potential that Chan saw in them)...but it was so sadistic the way they treated them, the pressure on Chan and the kids (they were truly kids, with a kid leading them, just like Hyunjin said in their last 2KR) and it has taken the biggest on Chan...the way he reacts, the way he works, the way he does everything...if you see his speech on Seoul's concert, when he says those "I'm gonna protect you all" lines, is just basically him full burnt out mood, his need for perfection and his obsession with carrying the weight of everything and everyone because his fear of failure...If you watch Survival Show you will see how much it was for him...especially when each performance got to be evaluated, or when Felix and Lee Know were cut from the show...the show was meant to cause expectation, but I got to feel it was also meant to break their spirits so they could "give their best" on stage, and you can see how Chan suffered (at all levels) every single second of it. I saw it once and every single time I see Felix with kinetape on his back (all Maniac tour), Hyunjin's hand recently, or when Lee Know almost collapsed on Tiger Inside performance from exhaustion, I remember Survival Show and how that got marked like fire to them until nowadays. And that's why I think STAYS are so proud too, because SKZ have overcome all of that as a selfproduced group that keeps going higher and further.

I found this man and his group in 2020 and I love them all tremendously but undeniably Bang Chan has been just a little bit more special to me from day one and I don't see it changing. He came up through a very criticism heavy, cutthroat trainee programme and idol life is barely different. You don't get a chance to mess up and grow like the rest of us non-celebrities do. And unfortunately Chan has been human and made some mistakes, and predictably the world of kpop fans has never given him a break. So he pretty much got his dream to professionally do music, the way he likes, with people he likes - but at the cost of constant hate. Twitter is especially a hell hole and I am almost certain he has a secret account (lol) - I feel he uses it to keep track of the fandom because he takes almost as much responsibility for Stays as he does for SKZ. That means, he also sees the constant vitriolic hate that comes his way and with someone who is so sensitive, that has to beat at his soul. What gives me faith and comfort is the fact we know of these things because he does talk about them, increasingly so; especially in Chan's Room. That tells me he is aware and that is the first step. I look forward to the day when the confident, bad ass Bang Chan on stage crosses over into regular, everyday Bang Chan. I believe in it. It's been a long, slow journey, but I have confidence he will get there. One thing to note - If you pay attention, Stray Kids members do not tell us of troubles they are having in the moment. Most times when they recall fights with each other or emotional breakdowns its like 1, 2 or even 3 years past. I feel like it's a very smart boundary they have subtly set up. I say subtle because a lot of times I notice that Stays miss the timelines and just focus on the stories. They tend to wait until they feel they have resolved or moved past an issue before bringing it to the public and that is probably their only true way of maintaining the privacy they and all of us need. Not saying this to suggest Chan isn't still dealing with these issues, but it is something to consider for this and most of the intimate stories the members share. Like you, I see so much of myself in him (also, he's insanely hot. just saying) and I want him to be as happy as him and the other members have made me over these last 2 years. Face palm. I'm an editor for a living but I couldn't edit down this long azz comment? ugh, sorry

I think i fall in love and care for BangChan more and more as I get a glimpse of his life. (while not assuming)Going through what he did at a young age, the stress of trying to debut must have impacted him a lot. It bleeds through his music, his insomnia, his care for his members, his determination, his work ethics, his acceptance for everyone around him, his need to care and more. He is someone whom i pray and hope and wish, will be happy and satisfied with his life here, now and future. Someone whom i cherish and will definitely be on my mind. My leader BangChan

Chan's sleep schedule worries me too, but the thing is i'm pretty sure Chan deals with constant insomnia and i think that's what caused him to get into those habits... I'm not sure if he still does but he has said before that he's had really bad insomnia even before he became a trainee. That's also the reason Chan's room was created, under the concept of being a friend to those who can't sleep at night to make those nights less lonely, he's such a thoughtful person :(. their song insomnia was also made based off of his experiences as well, and he used to play it in his intros for Chan's room! Another thing about Chan though is that he has very low self-esteem and it's very apparent. He gives his everything to skz and stays because during his time as a trainee he was in a really bad place mentally, so when he says skz and stays are his everything he truly means it. I actually relate to Chan a lot on his mental issues and i tend to be able to see these in other people very easily since i can kind of see parts of myself in them. From my observations after following them since their debut, I believe he has trouble separating his idol persona and himself. He probably believes that every single good quality he has is part of that stage persona, and associates all of his bad qualities with his real self, which is why even when stays constantly give him support and compliments he may feel like that support is going towards his idol persona even though he has many good qualities in his real self, not just his persona. Not saying it's true, but from my experiences that could be it since i've had similar issues as well. He's gotten better compared to pre god's menu era, but it hurts to see that even though everyone tells him all the time how amazing he is, he himself doesn't truly believe it and so those reassurances are only temporary. I've started trying to heal and slowly learn to have a better mindset, and i really hope that he does soon too

Sleep is like a a friend of a third cousin tbh but that would explain why I forget everything and staying focused is the absolute hardest thing I do throughout the day lmfao. I never agreed so hard about the mentally strong part. I grew up around “mentally strong” people. Who I now know are the most sensitive and emotional persons. My dads just like that to a T and he worked himself half to death. The only times I’ve ever seen him cry was when he couldn’t hide his weaknesses from us and now in the present since he had a stroke and can no longer filter emotions. I really hope Chan can change some of his habits but I’m also really glad he has loving emotionally intelligent people around him to support him.

This 2kr episode left a bittersweet feeling in me 😢 I agree with you 100% about hoping that Chan finds someone he can be vulnerable with. Easier said than done though. This might sound weird but I wish him no heartbreaks at all, I don't want him to go through being open and vulnerable with someone just to end up lonely and unhappy. But that's just life and you live, you learn. I also wish that he could confide in us Stays a little bit more. highkey wish that chan would stumble upon this video and book a session with you ngl, i desperately hope that he has an actual therapist that he talks to but i somehow doubt it, for several reasons. the fact that chan is not only the leader of the group but also the oldest makes for some beautifully lovely dynamics but it also becomes a negative when it comes to his view of himself. he truly believes that he needs to be that person who is always strong and steady and reliable but what he doesn't realise is that vulnerability can exist alongside all of those things. idk, i was just nodding along with you through this whole video lol, i worry about him, and i hope as he grows and matures he will start to see things differently. and the same with the rest of the members, maybe sometimes it can be okay to ask if he's okay, if he starts crying out of nowhere again. yeah it might be a bit uncomfortable, and i understand him completely for not wanting them to be concerned, like i get his reasoning, but it's just not the healthiest way of dealing with things, as you say. that uncomfortability needs to exist for you to be able to move forward sometimes, and i hope he can learn to allow himself to lean on other people for the support that he needs and deserves. great commentary though for real, 10/10 would watch again.

I relate to him so much and I hate showing vulnerability too but I've learned the hard way what not processing feelings and emotions will do, like you said, it will all come out eventually. Maybe it's because I'm older than all of the kids (I'm only 2yrs older than Chan) but I feel so protective of them and worry about them a lot, especially Chan and Felix. it's so good to see you recording again, welcome back to the wave! i hope you're recovering well (or as well as possible). i think this is my favorite of your 2kr reactions because of the amount of comments (and insights?) we got from your re: analyzing their mental health. chan is a heavy insomniac and workaholic, and so often he sends us messages at like... 5-6am and he's just getting into bed. we usually don't get to see him opening up on official recordings like these, but he does open up a lot more, as well as gives stay heartfelt advice and stuff, during his weekly episodes of chan's room. i'm not sure if it was mentioned in any of the 2kr eps (because i have terrible memory) but he has talked quite a handful of times about how the members came into his life at a time he was struggling a lot mentally (implied heavy depression), and how if it weren't for them he maybe wouldn't even be here (open to interpretation, but you can see where this is going) today.

@@Psynergic JYPE seems to have a therapist dedicated to the company though i'm not exactly sure how that works and, as mentioned by previous company idol(s) and proven quite a handful of times in the last few years, the company does seem to care about the mental health of their artists to some extent (i.e.: TWICE, DAY6 and SKZ members going on extended breaks/hiatuses, shortened promotions etc due to mental health issues). it's not perfect, that's certain, but it's something. plus, chan is stubborn if anything. there's this quote from exo's kai where he said "i'd rather bend than break" and i feel that's very true for chan's way of living his idol life. we can only hope he's getting professional help when/where needed. until he speaks up about it himself, all we can do is keep telling him to get some rest and eat properly/healthily i guess

I think when they(or koreans in general) say "mentally strong" they mean more of a strong disposition that simply holding back emotions. Like they're not easily "shaken up" or gullible. For example if they were playing a game of mafia or smth someone might say seungmin is too strong of an opponent bc his "mental is too strong" Just my observations tho I could be wrong 😅

I relate to the not wanting to be consoled. I also get annoyed if someone tries to comfort me or even worse, talk to me while I'm crying cuz it makes it harder for me to control my emotions and I end up crying even harder without wanting to. But I do cry a lot it just applies to in public cuz I guess society made crying feel humiliating. Something worrying that chan has said once or twice that most ppl forget about was that he wouldn't be alive if it weren't for stray kids...he once said it very very early in their career that 'if it weren't for stray kids, there wouldn't be a reason to live anymore' And it scared me, he didn't say it in a cute way, he was crying backstage. Especially when I found out wj left...I panicked a lot because my first thought was 'How is Chan' The members are literally everything he has and I hope he remembers that they want to be his support system in every way. A few of the members have said they want to grow up quicker so they can help chan with his burdens

Shawn, It is good to see you feeling a bit better. Was worried about you! Ah, and how you identify with Chani. Ditto. And worry about him but most Stay who've been around long enough feel the same, we see how hard he works and know that he also is the go-between for the group and the organization (you will see how much the member's respect him when briefly referring to his responsibilities). Thank you for how you look deeper into him. Oh and love how you look at Seungmin, it's like watching you glow. Something I've also noticed, (about Chani) is how he choose the individual group members. Of course, he choose them for their talents, their skillsets and the amazing way each vocal is distinctly different (easily recognizable if listening to their music). But also, It's as though he sought out the various parts of his own personality (or perhaps how he saw what he felt he was lacking, mmmm maybe or maybe not). Each member fills a role in the group but also in the way they fill/fit into his life. (Those 7 years alone did a number on his mental well being but these other young men heal him, daily.) Again, it's so good to see you feeling better, but please don't push too hard. (Haha, had that exact same thing said to me today). Love ya, Shawn.

A good leader will always try to find people who fill in their gaps. I definitely think he’s the type to know that. ☺️ Thank you for being here and for your comment, really appreciate you! 💙

I totally agree with you, some things Chan talks about is making me worried. He also uses self deprecating tone some times like " very good Chan....idiot" which is not helpful and we shouldn't treat ourselves that way. But everyone goes through times like this and skz look like good people to be around so even if he would hide his issues I think they still be there for support.

High school in Korea is three years, and considering the age difference their time there probably didn’t overlap at all, so they don’t talk about it much. It’s not like I.N and Hyunjin who literally went to school and back to the dorm together almost every single day until Hyunjin graduated

Yes, this one made me sad too. Just as some of the other content about Chan makes me sad. The whole "mentally strong" thing......means emotions are being pushed down. And there is only so long you can do that. I do worry about Chan. But the fact that he does talk about it (more on Chan's Room) makes me I feel slightly less worried. I also know it's no use us stays telling him he should sleep. Like he isn't already aware that insomnia is a problem. And he has been sleeping much better. The wording some of them use in these 2kids room sort of suggests they have spoken to professionals. And I did read that JYP has someone on the payroll, a psychologist I think. I also heard JYP himself say in an interview once that there was a time he worried about Chan. When so many of his trainee friends debuted or left and Chan was lonely and depressed. So there are people keeping An eye on things like that. Chan mentions that he lost many people in his life, his trainee years. And so much responsibility....I don't know...like many (and you too apparently) I identify with Chan the most. I recognise a little too much. And so yes, I'm worried. but I trust the rest of the members and Chan himself. I think he has changed a lot already. He is not unaware and that gives hope he'll be okay. Hope you'll get enough time to rest and recover from Covid. It does take time. And you have other things going on that are hard to deal with on top of that. Take care. But def glad to see you reacting to this, which IS one of my fav episodes.

Thank you for reacting to this one. I really appreciate it. And yes, Bang Chan finished his schooling in South Korea. He moved there from Sydney when he was only 13 years old. He and Seungmin went to the same high school, whereas IN and Hyunjin went to the same performing arts high school. Again, I wish you a bright day and I enjoy learning more and more about Stray Kids together with stays even though I've been a Stay since pre-debut there's always new content from the kids. We're a lucky bunch. ♥

I agree with you when you say that Chan's struggling with his mental health, but I disagree with the not so mentally strong thing. I have always had this opinion in my head that you can't be brave if you don't fear anything and you can't be strong if you don't have any weakness. For me it's the way you handle them that makes you strong or brave. Just because you struggle, have ups and downs or let it build up for while doesn't mean your not strong, you should still find profesional help to give you another point of view and more strategies to cope but that also doesn't make you weaker, just smarter. It's important to know that you don't have to face it alone.

Hi I am new to your channel and I subscribed, not sure how its going to work out for me tho. I usually pick channels that have the translation in a bit bigger size as I have issues with reading the real small print, as was on your video..I tried using my subtitles/translation thing but for some reason it just gave me what you said which I speak English so that was no help lol. I will try a few more of your videos and see, as I like your commentary style so far. I hope you get rid of your tiredness from C but several of my friends who have had it says it can hang with you for awhile even after the tests say you are all clear..
