Love it or hate it, the London has been my tried-and-true opening since I started playing chess two years ago. In this video, I'm using four of my own London games as a case study for understanding this opening and other insights as I climbed from 800-1500 in Chess.com rapid games.

One of Kamryn’s strengths is that she has retained an awareness of how she thought and envisioned the board at a much earlier stage. Many of the higher level teachers have lost that connection and blaze through with excellent, but hard to follow stratagems. I really appreciate her approach.

I'm 1100 I play London with white so this is completely doable, I'm lazy and obsessive so I play only London with white and French with black

Don't! Becoz sometime you delayed a move and that screws up the whole purpose of the London System.

I'm glad you mentioned not moving the same piece twice in the opening. This is how I was taught to play many years ago and you are about the only chess channel that I've seen that emphasizes this rule. This fits into the whole idea of tempos, which is another bullet point for beginners. I knew nothing about these concepts when learning the game back in grade school but when I got to high school I had an English teacher who was a 1700 (which was a big deal back then) and he taught me quite a bit about these fundamentals. So thanks for this.

Most do as it's a principle. Others might not mention it because they go into more detail and include the exceptions if you know an opening well enough that involves this. Probably others don't mention it all the time as they're focused on opening lines.

No lie. That third game got me nervous with the opening aggression and made me realise that this happens a lot in my own games and I probably just need to relax a bit more. Because when I feel threatened like that I typically make bad decisions!

This is the first video ive seen of yours. I'm subbed. I love the pacing. Some chesstubers are extremely fast, with pre recorded board setups and they are chasing their tail keeping the voiceover/shot to camera in time and making it look live.. This is great, very concise and easy to understand.

I've just discovered your videos and I'm very impressed with your very clear analysis and humble approach to chess. I will make a point of watching the rest of your stuff. with regard to this video, i've been a long term player of the (sometimes maligned Colle System, the older brother of the London which keeps the bishop within the pawn chain as you probably know. I may start giving the London a whirl though, after listening to your video, as there are a lot of similar positions with the Colle and the bishop on the outside may make things a bit sharper. Well done, anyway.

Really needed this, I've been studying fried liver lines and initially I was enjoying myself but have hit a wall, inspiring video to get me exploring the London. Yeah fried liver used to be my favorite as a beginner but around mid 1100 is when I noticed people started to counter it or just totally avoid it, The scotch is a great replacement for fried liver it has helped me raise my rating and personal best recently so I definitely recommend it.

Great video and explanations. I really like the London. I'm around 800, and the more I play chess, the more I realize why it's so good. The knight and dark square bishop are so powerful at controlling the e5 square. (with added benefit of the dark square bishop easily moving to g5 protected by the knight if there's an opportunity to attack the queen). The pyramid pawn structure is great and opens up the queen and light square bishop to the queen side, and they can also easily line up on the a4 diagonal against the king.

Thanks for spreading the word. Thanks to the London I have won many, many games... with Black. Totally love it when White plays schematically, doesn't pressure my centre and let's me equalize after a few moves. The only Black opening where I score >50%.

I was skeptical because she only showed games where she was first. But after about ten games I got the hang of it and it's better than what I used to do. What helped me the most was not so much the opening but advice about moving opening pieces a bunch of times.

Thanks for the video. I don't play the London but sometimes have to play against it. I used to do the Nc6 move until recently, found it lacking, switched to c6. Now I gotta try the ''right'' move c5. My positions have been solid but the attack has been slow to build up (with c6)

Loved your video! very pedagogic, I am stuck in 900 elo, I have good tactics, but dont study any opening so I always improvise and lose advantage in the first movements
