In this video I show you how to install a critical upgrade on your BMW.
I upgrade to a full oil pressure gauge on my 2008 BMW E90 335i with the N54 engine.
Upgrading to a true oil pressure sensor on your BMW could save you a lot of money if it potentially saves your motor.
I install an AEM 100 PSI oil pressure sensor in this video.
If you want to mimic my setup you would need the following parts:
Aftermarket oil cooler (affiliate):
ebay.us/O6BbPS
OEM O-Rings for oil cooler (affiliate):
bit.ly/39fUe77
P3 Gauge (affiliate):
bit.ly/396mXg6
The adapter for the oil pressure sensor (affiliate):
amzn.to/3qt3rR3
The pressure sensor kit (affiliate):
amzn.to/3tUGnfS
If you have a factory oil cooler you can get the following adapter instead (not an affiliate):
vargasturbo.com/product/vtt-b...
If you want to install an aftermarket gauge you can use the following gauge pod (affiliate):
bit.ly/3aeUEMH
Here is a 45 mm oil pressure gauge that could work in that vent pod and with that sensor (affiliate):
amzn.to/3aVodC6
If this is the first video you are catching of mine please consider subscribing. I upload regularly.
Thanks for watching :)
When you see the word "affiliate" listed beside any link in my description please know that this is a custom link and I will earn a small commission if you opt to purchase using said link. This is at no extra cost to you so it's a win all around :) Thank you!

I totally would love to see you retrofit an oil dipstick. I have an Audi and a BMW. Neither of them came with a dipstick. But in the case of the Audi, the 2L Turbo already have a tube where the dipstick is suppose to be. They simply did not include it, so I just bought one from Amazon and thats my DIY done. For my BMW N52 though, there is no tube at all. So I don't know to put a dipstick there.

I would recommend just cross check your calibration on the sensor, when I work on N54 and check oil pressure I take out the oil pressure switch sensor and use my OTC oil and transmission pressure tester, I had to buy an addition fitting a m12x1.5. I just recommend it to ensure your reading is true. Typically i see about 90 PSI on cold starts

Please be aware that the placement of the sensor in this location only gives proper reading if you have removed/reversed the oil thermostat or placed a "low temp thermostat" from BMS or FTP (note, both of these are not true temperature depended thermostats. They allow static flow all the time) If you have a stock setup or a upgrade like Mosselman then the thermostat most likely influences the pressure reading.

@rotorblade9508
@rotorblade9508 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve used a tpms and installed a coolant pressure sensor since I had a cracked tank, but yours is also a good idea. Tpms is ok but it needs recharge when when cloudy days, then the sensor battery needs replacement after a while plus they aren’t very reliable. It read temperature as well so you would get oil pressure and temperature at the same time. But you need to build your own adapter with a tire valve threat. PS there are 1/8” to male valve stem threat available online everywhere That sensor can also be used with an arduino. Just map it and use a display

Question: The 2011 E82 and the 2011-2016 Z4 sDrive35is also have N54s and MSD80/81 DMEs and also HAVE oil pressure sensors. I've seen them being monitored by MHD, there are threads in the forums showing measured oil pressure. This means the car must be capable of measuring oil pressure instead of just an oil pressure switch if we can change the coding for it. How can I add an oil pressure sensor to my 335 to get that same functionality? Seems like a cool topic you could make a video about.

Hi, can I ask you a simple off subject question? Just renewed my serpentine belt, along with tensioner & two pulleys. I noticed I get some lateral movement from the belt over the tensioner. I could definitely a wobble from the top pulley of the tensioner. Got a replacement, & getting the same thing, this time the lower pulley on the tensioner seems to have more wiggle to it. Is it acceptable for the tensioner pulleys to wiggle like this? Could I really have had two that are not good? Could the belt itself cause this? Both tensioners are INA & belt is Meyle. The belt seems to run true over over pulleys, but moves when it runs over tensioner. Thank you

Running a hose away from the engine and remotely mounting the sender instead of mounting it directly onto the fitting is the better route to take. Because the sender is mounted so close to the engine, the vibrations from the engine could lead to early failure.

Hello, do you think it would have worked if you swapped the OEM sensor with the AEM sensor and used a tap connector between the OEM cable from the OEM sensor and the ground cable from the AEM sensor? In other words, the AEM sensor would sit in the stock location with an M12x1.5 make to 1/8 NPT female and the OEM sensor would be gone but the cable from the wire would still sense ground from the AEM sensor.

On the way back, the engine coughed a couple of times and would seem to lose power and vibrate, but no check engine light. Now, after a few days, every time I drive, it cuts out after 2300 rpm to 3000 rpm and starts running rough and has no power, like it's lost a few cylinders or something. Funnily enough, upon turning off and on the engine, it becomes smooth again. However, problem recurs at 2300 rpm to 3000 rpm again. What do you reckon it could be?

No nothing can save a BMW engine , just one of the German car companies that are being sued for faking emissions . Top tip for saving any engine which I use on race cars is a Harley Davidson hydraulic brake switch in the gallery made by Accel etc. Just cut any ignition wire and connect it across the terminals on the brake switch . The car will then not start until oil pressure shuts the brake switch and cut the engine instantly should you lose oil pressure . I think the last one from the US was about £15 ( $19) !

On N55 engine, there is an oil pressure sensor monitoring the oil (reading range: 0.5 to 10.5 bar) and adjust the duty cycle of the oil pressure solenoid so as to provide a specific pressure for the vanos gears, and also ease the load on the oil pump (better fuel economy) when not that much pressure is needed, am I right? If N54 engine has only oil pressure switch, then it has no control of pressure to the vanos. Then it really could not PRECISELY control and monitor the vanos gears? Maybe it would allow a wider range of limit before DME concludes something wrong (advance and retard) of the vanos?

Ok motor failed from bearing clearances? did you not plastygauge the rod cap and check after?

I did but given these engines come with three different rod bearing types from the factory I ended up with clearance that is too tight I believe. I have my original bearings so I'm thinking to double check the rod the crank clearance with the crankshaft out of the car.

@@VehicularDIY I think the bearing clearance codes are laser etched on the crank shaft, something like rrrbrr, each letter is a reference to the journal size and which colour coded bearings to use.

Hey man I have a N54 and I’ve been chasing this issue for a while . I’ve been having an issue where after getting on my car and coming to idle my rail pressure sky rockets to 2500 psi and starts ticking really loud . As soon as I tap the gas the tick goes away and the rail pressure drops to 750 and it will happen almost immediately after . I’ve changed the hpfp to a used one (all I could afford at the time) but I don’t think that’s the issue . Do you have any ideas on this ?

Sounds like maybe the volume control valve not working properly see if you notice a change in ticking from a cold start to about 2 minutes after the car starts.

Great content! But probably best way to fix it is just to get rid of the car. BMW it's not what it used to be in the '90.
