Part 2 of our 1200 mile nonstop Crossing of the Caribbean Sea from Guadeloupe to Panama. With a strong wind forecast for the remainder of this trip we try to keep a good distance from the coast of Colombia and its reputable bad acceleration zones. We hang on tight for a wild ride into Panama as we round Columbia and zoom down toward Colon for our planned Panama Canal transit.
@ Minute 13:33 to answer some frequent questions we give a general run-through of our ‪@Hydrovane‬ (self steering system) to explain how we use it when sailing offshore, how we adjust the course, balance the sails , the vane settings and also how we lock our helms.

I done the run from Bonaire to Panama in February 98 singlehanding on my Cutlass 27. It was the height of the trade winds strength along the coast of Colombia and the following seas were mast high. If my Hydrovane (early model) hadn't done its job at keeping me running downwind in near gale force conditions I would have broached and got rolled. I was mightily glad to get near Panama and out of the roller coaster ride that I had experienced in the 7 day passage.

This is a great story of the trusty Hydrovane, so good to hear. Those seas sound pretty horrible and show how gnarly it can get around that acceleration zone. Great job in a 27 foot boat. Cheers and fair winds.

@@SailingBeaver Yep, it took a while to get the stain out of my underpants!! I eventually made it to Whangarei via Manta, Galapagos, Easter island, Pitcairn, Ile Gambier, Papeete, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji. I sold the boat in Darwin to a local and I believe its still going strong. I had a bunch of backpackers as linehandlers for the Panama transit. As per usual got anchored half way through and then forgotten about for 4 days. I had to row ashore and phone the controllers in order to get another pilot to continue to Balboa.

Sam & Nicole, I must admit to cheating a little. When I miss sailing life (shoveling snow, freezing my butt off, or missing sunshine in general) I watch an episode to rejuvenate. But, I got a Holiday off (paid, no less!) and I've got a chance to watch episodes in order! Whoo Hoo! What a blast. I'm getting a touch older, so- I can't see doing what you are doing- day to day. But, I do feel that I'm living vicariously through your adventures. So, Thank You Both for making these episodes for your subscribers pleasure! What a gift in the middle of Winter, here in the Northeast corner of the USA. Beautiful sailing in July & August, but, after September- it's time to head for more southerly latitudes.

Very cool. What a great trip! Only as you get in the trades. We made that trip in our Kelly Peterson 44. We did stay closer in is we departed form Grenada. Made port in Cartagena as we heard so much good about it. We stayed there 2 weeks. Very nice. When we went you had to be very careful about piracy in Columbia. But Cartagena itself was very safe. We rounded the corner about 30 miles out and had winds of 25-30, higher in a few squalls. Our boat loves this wind speed so had a great passage. Was going to spend 2 weeks in Panama, we didn’t………..we spent 2 yrs! Loved it. Great cruising the San Blas and Boca’s. Went through the canal 5 times. ( it was much cheaper then. We cruised the Caribbean and Pacific islands of Panama before finally heading out to the Pacific. Fair Winds my friends.
