Joel treats a patient who does his own body modifications. However, this patient's story is a little more complex than he first thought...
From Season 1 Episode 7 “Consenting Adults”: Whilst Alex conducts a standard tutor removal, the patient has an adverse reaction to the anesthesia and slips into a coma. Whilst in a coma, she meets Charlie and confides in him about her arranged marriage and religious beliefs. Meanwhile, Joel performs surgery on Karn, whose self-implanted horns have become infect, even though it is against his wishes. Charlie’s ex-wife Dawn returns to check on Charlie’s condition, unhappy with his progression she reveals that she is petitioning for a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order.

Those builders pissed me off so much. The bump into a guy who clearly has a high fever, pick a fight when they’re in a group and he can barely stand up, then walk away when he collapses without looking back or even asking if he’s ok.

TerminalCarrion they’re builders, not medical personal. He could’ve easily been drunk and he was the one picking the fight, they just didn’t back down. While I don’t promote aggression, they’re not bad people and you’re getting angry over stupid stuff. Focus your emotions on something worthwhile.

Tā Moko isnt gender specific nor is it just for the face. It's just our way/name/style/tradition of tattoos.

@@jetchan8681 I appreciate your correct use of the term Tā Moko, however I am still at a loss as to why his facial Tā Moko spans only his chin. Where a male would generally where his from the forehead down. At any rate, this wasn't meant to be a literal question, more a rhetorical thought I had out loud.

Because people are stupid and don't understand the culture that they use in their tattoos. Whether this was deliberate or showing the writers uninformedness, it seems highly reasonable to me that there are people out there to have that tattoo, maybe just because it looked cool

Doctor was just working with what he was given. If you've never met one of those people in real life you wouldn't understand. Superiority has nothing to do with it. Logic doesn't work with them. To them it's just what feels like it should be right.

@@trebot9292266 doesnt it? i have met few (not many, but still). and have been close when collegues dealt with them... both while working at a coffee shop at a beach and in everyday life. The same way a woman may not like being looked at constantly, a person like that doesnt like it either when u look at him like a weirdo and act like it. (tp be honest first-second time my reaction was like that too (what is this!!!) but trying to coreect it and face the person like every other got me a thanks from his side for not being the superior "normal" he usually deals with (and a healthy tip). and i have been present when sb else deals this way and actually starts telling u know it isnt good for ya... and whenthe girl complained the manager took my collegues side...) human like treatment goes a long way, no matter if u believe the other deserves it or not.

@@pasmas3217 Yeah. I know someone who was convinced eating food made you weak. as much as you might try, he wont listen to reason. Only choice i have is to watch him wither away. Dude probably weighs only 70lbs. Just one example. something to realize is they dont usually have a healthy brain chemistry due to various reasons. In the example i gave, malnutrition. In the show, an infection. typically the people who make themselves stand out in such a way they... want to stand out. a random woman coming up to someone sharing their pinterest crap is vastly different from a doctor trying to diagnose and treat a potentially life threatening issue that you yourself went to get checked out. I'm not saying treat people like the construction workers treated the dude, i'm saying do like the doctor did, Do your job and mind your business. Inspecting and potentially removing the horns would be his job if they posed a risk to the dudes life.

@@trebot9292266 The doctor refused to call him by the name he asked to be called. Asked for a psych consult when it wasn't needed, and was made obvious it wasn't needed when the psych cleared him. If the doctor had simply explained that he thinks that there may have been an issue with the horns, gonna scan them and see if we can do something without touching them. Leaving removing them as a last resort the guy probably would've stayed in hospital.

The attitudes on all the medical staff except the psych were pathetic. The superiority complex, the attitude that he doesnt know what he's doing, that infection is a guaranteed thing with body mods. Plenty of people get body mods without problems, the chance of rejection is much higher than the chance of infection. Also whats with the implication that tattoos and piercings are the same thing? Sloppy writing with no research done.

@@zacharycomstock4223 As long as appropriate sterilisation techniques are followed, Its not unsafe to do such things to your own body. the only thing that could be an issue is the awkward angles involved, and having the appropriate skill set to make sure you dont cut the wrong bits. But there are plenty of people who can do complex hair braids upside down and backwards, or apply makeup with a tiny brush only a mm away from their own eyeball. Bacteria doesnt sit and think to itself "oh good, that person is alone, we can go there" .

As a special effects makeup artist and someone with body mods I’m highly disappointed by the work the did on him. His lobes/tunnels aren’t realistic and aren’t placed correctly, random tattoos that don’t add up (a traditional women’s Maori facial tattoo being the big one)

Health problems increase burden on household; affect child's future. Is it worth it? People let go of some things before committing to marriage and building a family. Nothing new.

@@shootingcomet082 I dont know about the philoshophical basis of that, but what i know is, that almost every law in every country says otherwise. Such as causing lethal harm on oneself is considered a crime and will be punished with captivity. Abrahamitic Religions also agree on that the body is the property of god and cant be harmed. So when religion and law agrees on something, you have bad chances of arguing that.
