@@randomizerL2012 NordVPN specifically had a data breach a couple years ago and failed to properly disclose it in a timely manner. In general these VPN services can't be trusted. The more well known they are, the more appealing a target they are to bad actors who would steal or leak people's personal information and usage history. Since "privacy" is the service they advertise, a hack or breach would hurt their company image, so any breach will be met with an attempt to cover it up rather than a warning to their customers. Additionally, they aren't too likely to push back against any government agency seeking to obtain usage data, as that puts them at risk of fines or even abolishment. Again, since their advertised service is privacy, they aren't likely to disclose to customers if a government agency demands information. In most cases, you are better off with a private VPN owned and operated by yourself (or your employer, if for business use), or a free VPN if all you want is to cloak your location.

For a bit of LEGO history, the first "bracket" we really had was the 2x2 offset bracket with holes (part 3956, 1979) which is ridiculously limited and awkward compared to the modern brackets that started coming out in the early 2000s. There was also the headlight brick (part 4070, 1980), which was a common workaround piece but still pretty primitive. A little later the "space seat" came out (part 4598, 1984), a common element you could use for SNOT building in a pinch (but it was uuuugly). Finally we got the 1x4 bracket (part 2436, 1987) which was a big leap forward but 1x4 is rather clumsy and for some reason LEGO took many years to put out the other varieties. The same year we also got the rare bastard cousin of the old 3956, the 4x1 offset bracket (part 2422, 1987), just look at that weird nonsense! They put that out instead of something sensible like a 1x2 or 2x2 bracket!

Well, 3956 is for sure the "mother of all brackets", but used very different - however quite surprisingly still around. 2436 however was the first to introduce the concept all modern brackets share. 2422 I had to look up at first. While it is technically some kind of bracket, I see it more as a less fragile and less out-of-system successor to 4169 (not that it makes the life for it's usual companion 4168 any longer…).

Fascinating info, I agree with Tiago that I would happily watch a short video or read an article about the history you just outlined. E: I found an article from tips and bricks that outlines the modern brackets and their history, but it doesn't mention any of the more... Unique pieces that you mentioned from the past, which thankfully stayed firmly in the past.

As a digital builder, the stuff about build solidity is super helpful. Making mocs which would be hypothetically stable and solid appeals to me, but you're kind of flying blind when building digitally. I would love to see more advice on this, maybe in a video of its own on how to make builds secure, for people like me who don't really have the space to build physically
@raf42
@raf42 Жыл бұрын
@OceanBeach I'm not the person you asked, but Lego Digital Designer as well as Lego Studio are commonly used. It's basically where instead of building with physical bricks, you're building digitally in 3D world, akin to what you might find in a modeling software. This can be done to design a build that you will eventually make IRL, as well as to make stuff out of parts that are hard to find or impossible to find, and finally it's great for people who don't have the spare money to acquire the real bricks in such quantities. Obviously the experience is very different than building physically, but it can still be quite rewarding, not to mention free.

Important note: For some reason the studs on the side are raised by a tiny amount. This makes it illegal to use two same brackets, which are placed with their side studs on a plate in different orientations to build an inverter, for example

I mainly use bracket pieces to help build LEGO Planes, as I mainly make recreations of LEGO Planes and sometimes the LEGO Planes are recreations of very small private jets, so brackets come in handy for trying to give more room for more seats while still keeping the scale small. Quick question regarding the build at 8:36: In isolation, if I try putting inverted brackets (any size) back-to-back antistud-to-antistud like this, and use a plate to attach them on top (replace the faucets with 1x2 plate for instance) the brackets seem to want to splay outward apart from each other. Is this illegal? I can't imagine why it would be yet it seems to be the case. Even in software it looks like it should work, but doesn't in real life without forcing everything together.

Thank you so much for this kind of videos. When I was child, some 50 years ago, we only had regular bricks, plates, tilesband two different angled slopes. SNOT wasn't really a thing, barely possible at all by some "illegal" connections. For this reason, I've had my issues with these "modern" bricks like brackets. I barely used them when I started building mocs because I didn't saw the usefulness behind the of these bricks, like here stabilising stacks of bricks or combining them with headlights. Btw, there are really good looking sets from my childhood without any of these "new stuff". I recently rebuild Set 391, the blue Renault, I had as a child.

I also remember the piece this is based on, which was used as a mount for those black, 4 finned rocket boosters like in classic space, UFO, BlackTron.

The brackets also revolutionized small mech cockpit design, much in the same way as the couches!

Back in the day we only had the headlight piece which was terrible for structural stability. Anything vertical you'd build out of them would colapse immediately and you never had enough to secure your structure appropriately. Also the older version was very prone to breaking. Not sure why, but the little beam in the back of the brick would always break after a few years of use.

Growing up in the early 2000s there were only a few variations of the bracket and most sets had headlight bricks, then i remember over time it slowly started getting used more and more and then the mass amount of newer bracket plates (and making the inverted ones more common) were released and its just taken over even more. Speed champions would not be here if we hadnet gotten teh 1x2 or 1x1 bracket types. this kind of goes in line with legos advance towards more and more detailed builds with smaller and smaller pieces, the release of dots and mixels and such creating a vast number of new tile and small slope pieces.
