I've had this printer for about a year now. I live where it can get below freezing and the printer is in a detached garage. Despite the freezing temps, when printing overnight, the printer almost never fails. And most of those fails are when I have to set up supports myself and I screw it up. Other than that, it's been perfect and an absolute joy to use. I also love that the printing plate doesn't submerge fully into the resin, so you never have to worry about resin on the top of the plate. It's a small thing, but it's great.

It's pricier compared to the competition, but they do definitely get a few key things right in my eyes.. First there's the obvious keeping resin at a decent temperature. No messing about with heating the vat with external things you may forget about. Second is the carbon filtration, which they've actually done a decent job on, especially compared to Elegoo's "we don't sell refills". Yes it's an extra cost to factor, but it also helps keep smells down. Third? The brilliant lid. Sooooooo many seem to assume we're fine with getting out lids messy over time and have some sort of way of dealing with it, or the room to lift it up. Then there's arguably one of my favourites - the fact the USB port AND POWER SWITCH are in the MOST important spot - the front. Glad to see a regular user's review of it, was a nice change of pace ^_^

Actually, the extra cost to factor is the lower life expectancy you can expect from your LCD from being the one that is heating the resin in the vat. It just boils down to the original design of the printer by FormLabs (oh yeah, it's a lower-priced copycat of the 5,000$ FormLabs 3) : heating the resin from under where the screen and electronics reside instead of heating the chamber or better still directly heating a metal vat with resistive traces. Note that the cost of the screen doesn't matter much for pro customers but for enthusiasts, that can have significant impact. Don't misread me though, I think it's awesome that solutions designed in the pro sector finally make their way into the main consumer market. But hidden costs and braindead copying existing designs instead of innovating even on the consumer market should be what we are warned about.

I get what you are saying here but I think calling the machine a bread dead copy is harsh, the printer amalgamates lots of good features and adds several of its own too, like the plate for example the system is very different from form labs and is essentially an open source option which is a very good thing. and while I am very much a layman here the extra heat cannot make that much difference to the screen life? electronic components are usually designed to withstand high temps that that output by the heater? @@the_arcanum
@the_arcanum
@the_arcanum 3 ай бұрын
@@RisingApe High temp operation in such a small enclosure will affect the components. Why else do you have active fans in that part of the machine in every resin printer ? It's not immediate failure ofc but it does effect the parts. Some components fail in safer conditions, here they'll just have an augmented risk of failing. For 24/24 pro operation, it sure is going to happen but it's a small cost, for amateur printing with a lighter load, you may or may not stumble upon the problem before it's time to upgrade your machine.

absolutley fair comments, and I can't comment other than to say, so far im not aware of anyone running into this issue yet. as a consumer I assume it will last the 12 months of its warantee and after that its fair game. At between 150-170 for a replacement its not too bad to replace if you get a year or two out of it. @@the_arcanum

Uniformation has not upheld it's guarantee withing a year of purchase and is now purposefully ignoring my emails requesting for support and replacement parts. I bought 2 GKtwo a washing and a curing machine. Overpaid, massive duty fees to canada, and now i cannot get any support or parts. Truly an awful experience.

@@RisingApe also give me a one-stop sealed unit for wash and cure. wire basket loads into top of unit, close the lid. Basket automatically lowers into tub of ISO for wash. basket raises back up to top sectoin where the UV light is for curing. Bonus points for sealing off the ISO section when not in use to reduce VOCs and a decent filter.

Wonderful review. I don't think its unreasonable to expect to preheat the thing before you start printing - I do this with FDM machines all the time. I'll tell them to warm up the bed, and then I return to the computer and slice whatever I want to print, that way by the time I go to actually print the machine will be warmed up and ready to go.

If you are new to printing it’s about balancing budget and convenience. If you live in a warmer country you can use a model without a heater. For northern hemisphere/ temperate countries they make life much easier

I'm just wondering how is the lifecycle of the heated LCD screen, do you need to replace it earlier than a normal (cooled) one ? these mono lcd's are not to cheap, just asking
@RisingApe
@RisingApe 3 ай бұрын
Honestly I don’t know the answer to this, BUT the screen itself is only heated to max 30 degrees and most electronic components are able to withstand significantly higher temperatures than this. I have about 300hrs of printing so far and am delighted with the performance

I think the final bit of user friendliness would be making the internal memory accessible over the network via NAS protocols. Using a USB stick to transfer files has always seemed a bit low tech.

My temp control is just in system settings, temp on or off and select temp, if I leave it on it switches on as soon as I turn the power on and gets up to temp. Got my Gktwo about 4 months ago, maybe you need to update firmware?

Im still on the fence with whether the UK import prices of another £200 are worth the review compared to just getting a saturn off amazon for £400 less.
@RisingApe

Difficult to say, if you are prepared to do some more DIY and cleaning of the various plates and screws then the Saturn is the better shout. There is no doubt for me though the quality of life improvements on the GK2 are worth it.

Absolutely get that, I would say the heater is a massive plus, with saturn you would need to buy a band vat heater, which are an annoyance. Basically it comes down to budget, if you have the cash, it’s worth the extra money.

Y U No wear mask?? I'm in the research step of buying a resin printer, one thing holding me back is a dedicated work space. I've read so many warnings and spooky stuff about the chemicals, and personally, if I die faster because of a resin printer, oh well. Live fast, print young. BUT I have cats and family I don't necessarily want to kill. Right now, I could put it in a very small shed that would be sharing space with a freezer. Sounds sketchy. Plus this shed bakes in the summer and freezes in the winter. I've heard this thing is great for low-temps but what about some dry-ass desert?
@RisingApe
@RisingApe Ай бұрын
I actually usually do wear a mask, yup, it works very well in winter time never heard of high temps causing too many issues but stable temps are much better for performance.
