This isn't, and cannot be, "the end of 3d printing as we know it". That's like saying cars coming from the factory with track tires already installed is going to be the end of aftermarket tires. 3d printing is by definition a hacker creation. And I use the term "hacker" in its original and true context, not in the current "breaking into computer systems (cracker) meaning. There will always be a market for 3d printer systems that are print medium brand agnostic. The PC was never the death of the Apple or Mac. The gaming console was supposed to kill off PC gaming 20 years ago. Until a core technology goes away, there is always a market for non proprietary components and ecosystems.

I have no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best printers on the market right now if not the best. But $1500 plus $50-$80 per bottle of resin is just prohibitively expensive. Again, I’m sure it’s fantastic. I just cannot be even close to affording that right now, not to mention it’s not even a 10 inch build plate. It’s closer to the size of a Mars.

I’m a fellow HG Reflex lover and have about six months under my belt with it for engineering applications including casting metals with the PAC10 resin. Just quick note: from my research the Form4 uses a system that sounds identical to the PRM unit of the HG’s. It’s just built into their printer. Also, the PAH10 resin is the strongest resin they make by a long shot. Use it where strength is critical. Lastly, I regularly use third party resins in my HG’s printer. It works wonderfully doing so.

Amazing, high-end, consumer piece of kit. Thank you for introducing Hey Gears, Reflex as quite possibly the BEST 3D Resin based Printer. I'm a novice , just getting started into 3D filament printing. However, as a retired sheet fed operator, of typically four, five, & six unit offset, full size (40 inch), ink to paper, printing presses. Industry leaders such as, Mitsubishi & Heidelberg (Speedmaster). I've been through many stages of printing & seen it evolve over the years. Early on when I began the trade of printing on paper, it was working in the format known as led type set. These were most often single unit (1 colour, more often black), however, one German Heidelberg printing press stands out the most, from my many, learning experiences on it. That was like the ultimate, revolutionary machine of its time. A strong & heavy press (for those days). The German ink printing machine, called the Heidelberg, Kord. Just google it. That press helped evolve the industry. What I mean by that is, after laying out small, individual pieces of led type, setting it all, individually into a wooden, flat, holder, called a chase. Well this was quite laborious, clever, unique, stylish & all, but once I disassembled this press somewhat. Cleaned the press, and made it ready by installing 16, or more cylinders and rollers, this meticulous, but slow press was transformed into a speed demon. One of the worlds first truly fast, ink printing, off-set style presses. Capable of handling both, type-set, & off-set printing. Now we no longer had to work with individual type pieces of led. Because now we can assemble much more content. Rich, flowing images, and text developed by camera onto plate. Years later in my career, I watched the disposal of a lot of skilled pre-press workers.You see with the ever more increasing use of more advancements in electronics, the technology forced many skilled workers in camera & plate development out of jobs. Take for instance the final versions of multiple unit presses, made by Heidelberg. Just as we rolled into the new millennium, Y2K came about, so did the elite of the Heidelberg, Speedmaster's, off-set printing presses. There was no more hanging the plates to impression cylinders. Instead, every time new plates were required on units, laser diodes went into operation & burnt a new plate. The plates' image came from a RIP on someone's computer, somewhere, after being proofed & signed off by a graphic artist, as well as the client. Next a spool fed roll of mylar with another substance layered on the top, gets rolled into action with the laser diodes burning & etching out the finished work onto the plate cylinder, holding precise register (perfect position in relation with all other plates on the press). Any how, when I look back upon those changes, the printing plant became an ever more increasing lonely place to work. I would catch myself talking more & more with machines. Don't get me talking about C.Y.M.K. (Siam magenta yellow and black), with these four process inks, one found themselves some days not having to develop our ink colours nearly as often. Those four process inks could do pretty well any shade of a rainbow. I'm still just getting into this new game (for me that is), with my first 3D filament fed, roll of substrates, gleefully watching these Creality creations grow. All the while try'n to keep an attentive eye on my creations. Would love to know if I can program my Raspberry Pi 4B, to watch over & make remote changes, on the fly, working on this Hey Gears Reflex possibly using some sort of software on my Raspberry Pi, like OctoPrint.org has created that functions well when pairing something as my Creality, Ender 3 S1 Pro, & Octo Pi? Oof, 700 quid for a compressor? I thought Iwata charged a lot for things (a Power Jet Pro is like $7-800 CAD here in Canada, but it's also stupidly quiet and runs at a higher pressure than the AS186K based ones do). I'm glad you're giving it the spin you are, specifically the "it's a tool, and it kind of behaves like such too" kind of spin. Is it pricy? Yes, many things are pricy when compared to an "entry-level" Elegoo Mars printer. Is it closed ecosystem? Also yes. But to have something where you chuck the files in and it spits them out correctly the first time, by the sounds of it without having too many annoying supports to deal with (aka no over-supporting like one sometimes has to when rolling their own path)... I can see how it could be rather handy as a tool. Resin prices are still a massive oof though, but sounds like they're starting to work that out.

Another banger, great work and I'm happy to see Heygears continuously improving this thing. I really ought to get around already to making my own video on this thing, because for me the lock in stuff is a deal breaker and it's a point worth hammering I feel. Also, this printer is a fume nightmare for anyone unaware - it has three powerful fans in the rear that just directly blast the fumes into whatever space you're using it in. So make sure if you do buy this printer you have an enormous and vented enclosure for it, or a space away from your living areas like an outdoor shed that you could set it up in.

Yeah I definitely agree with the lock-in, and i really dislike how their slicer reports every action you perform back to their servers even if you run offline projects, and the silly password protected slicer output files (i assume to prevent you from using other slicers to create/modify them? the password wasn't too hard to work out, at least, but didn't seem like you can specify custom exposure times in those files so not too useful.) unfortunate since the printer itself seems really nice, it's just a little much for me to stomach. :D

The vertical integration (software + printer + resin + control of printing and environmental parameters) can theoretically provide some serious advantages such as individualised pixel curing / grayscale (expose supports more, and local areas of parts more or less depending on negative / positive details, etc.), compensation against cross curing (because it knows the resin's susceptibility to cross curing for a given layer height / temp, and uses its own slicer), etc. I don't know to which extent these theoretical advantages are effectively realised, though. If they already are to a tangible extent then I think that Heygears should market that more explicitly because this has the potential for being a huge asset. I'd welcome an "open mode" though, even at a cost if Heygears considers that they may have to beef up support to handle some issues... or without if they explicitly say "at your own risk". But I don't see that as a priority given what they're trying to achieve. Perhaps what they could do as well is partner with some known third party brands in a sort of certified program, to expand their lineup more quickly, in particular for oddball resins that wouldn't be profitable for them.

Hmm? Something like 2D printers where there's only a few companies to choose from? I hope at the very least the amount of brands will not dwindle down to five and hopefully some parts will be universal for easy replacement. I know that FDM nozzles and build plates are fairly universal. I recently bought a new kid on the block brand FDM printer on Amazon called Ankermake. It's a good printer that is fairly inexpensive. I plan to hold onto that printer as long as I can and watch the smoke settles.

@@RisingApe except snap on tools are not that great. This 3D printer sits somewhere between a consumer level and a production level printer and does not fit either category all that well. The company makes much better printers for production work then this one. This printer oversllmis just an odd duck. From an outsiders POV, it looks like they are trying to break into the consumer market, which have unique challenges such as having freedom of choice on slicer software and resins. I applaud them for trying as more competition in the consumer market is always good for the consumer. If they decide to do another printer entry into the consumer market they are going to have to really consider both price and more importantly choice of slicer software and resin selections.

I really disagree with closed ecosystems like HeyGears and Formlabs, the entire business model is incredibly anti-consumer. The vast majority of consumer printers 'just work' (as well as they can, having used several professional printers that also go wrong) with very little/no tinkering nowadays, especially if you're paying for the more premium options, and they don't lock you to their software and their resin.
@RisingApe

However I do plan to start up a 3D printing studio where I will design and print fan art statues, miniatures, molds and start producing short stop-motion films. From what I've seen, HeyGears has everything I need (both hardware and material wise) for my studio needs. Their printer and their materials are exactly what I've been looking for and the closed ecosystem will save me a lot of time. But I get what you are saying. It has pros and cons and for me at least, the pros outshadow the cons.
@NikkiAnnMarie
@NikkiAnnMarie 13 күн бұрын
@@RisingApe Totally get you there, but the extent of tinkering nowadays tends to be running an exposure test (on a quality printer anyway), and if you stick with that resin that's all you should need to do given that most models are presupported/you can use autosupports. Yeah, if you want to push for the best quality you'll need to tinker, but if you're happy with ~90% (what these closed ecosystem printers typically get to) then you should be fine.

@@evanskan6326 Totally understand the convenience factor for a business - however, what happens if HeyGears goes out of business? Or they stop supporting this printer and move onto the next one? Being locked into software and consumables from one specific brand means that overnight, the printer (or in the case of my lab, printers) can just become useless. See what happened with the previous Formlabs printers. The main benefit of these printers is that people with literally zero 3d printing knowledge can operate them with minimal training successfully, so they're great for larger businesses, universities etc. And don't forget, you can still buy their resins and use them as normal (although there are normally cheaper options), you just need to take the 20 minutes to calibrate them.

People get so caught up on if its "official lego" who cares honestly. There are plenty of legit building brick conpanies out there. Lego wasnt even the first.

Loved the video! And your honesty with the LESDIY kits and that you credited the designer! I actually have several designs on LESDIY - mainly YACHTS - and they've been great to work with. All my stuff is available on ReBrickable too! Would you have any interest in checking out one of my designs and doing a build on your channel? I'd even be willing to cover the cost or work something out with you. Would love to know your honest thoughts on the build/instructions/design style as I love that your straight up honest. Criticism IS welcome! If interested my ReBrickable name is Mr. J Builds - also my KZfaq channel has some info/videos on a few of my builds. Either way - excellent video/job!!

Out of interest, why do you state the price in dollars and not pounds? If I go on Temu from the UK it shows prices in pounds.

either make your ads shorter or make video longer.... or better yet make it a distinct segment. I think your vid was like 1/4 ad.

That looks amazing. I'll have to look for lesdiy. I recently made a Ali express purchase of a 2416 piece Daedalus from Stargate. Very fiddly. Instructions not always quite clear on colour and a couple of missing bits but otherwise so far it looks amazing. I suffer with my spine too. Got ankylosing spondylitis among other problems so I struggle sitting, laying etc. It's just constant pain but it is a lot worse when I've been building this.

@@RisingApe yeah I'd thought about one a couple of years ago because of my back. But it's everything now, ended up being diagnosed with fibromyalgia and other bits, I've got problems with most of my joints, muscles, some nerve areas etc. Such a pain, I used to be on my pc more but I can only sit on a chair for a couple of hours a day now, and definitely can't stand that long. I do want to get a big desk at some point a bit higher up, space for the pc, lego area etc. I want a little lego train set on it haha.

I checked out Temu and can´t find a single decent set, it´s all seemingly obvious scam-sets that cost 5-30 dollars/euro. What keywords should i use?

I have seen them for sale on, Ali Express and on Les DIY search Warhammer Battleship or Macragges honor. Unfortunately Letbricks discontinued the set so you can’t use that link.

I feel Impostor Syndrome every single day. My channel has 113k subscribers, I have a few videos with more than 1M views / and I still feel people will discover “the fraud I am”. Sure, I know I am good at what I do. My bank account makes me feel otherwise 😂 Some vídeos with just a few views also make me feel that. But the feeling is a real drag. Thanks for making a video on this matter. This thing is real.
