With snow and sub freezing temperatures on the horizon, we spend the last warm day gathering firewood from our 9.5 acre wooded homestead. Will we have enough to heat our barndominium shop house through a harsh north Idaho winter? #woodheat #tamarack #hardwork

My wife and I used to supply 90% of our winter heat with "free" firewood as well. When one considers the time, gas, oil, equipment and effort involved, it is really rather "expensive". The good thing was there was never a need for a gym membership! Like others have suggested...get a log splitter asap and your years of being able to continue this will be greatly enhanced.

If you'll carry the cut piece's back to the house and split them early in the morning when everything is froze hard you'll notice the wood splits alot easier, then you won't have near as many hits where the wood didn't bust and you had to hit it multiple times to get it split! I burned wood for 4 year's living by myself and I learned a lot about saving energy by splitting when the wood is frozen, it truly makes a big difference. I'm a bit older and working smart and not so hard makes every little bit help. Great video! Hearing that 4WD low gear whine brings back memories, I had a 79 just about the same make and color, definitely tough trucks

Thank you, this video brought back memories of my youth growing up in northern Maine. Every fall we wood fell trees and split wood for days in order to stay warm for the long Maine winters. Wish Liz was around back then, she is a log splitting machine but then again, we didn't have fast forward back then. LOL. Still, she can split some wood. Mike, excellent felling of that huge tree. We have been heating our home with a wood burner for about 45 plus years, I'm here to tell you, there is nothing free about it! It's hard intensive back breaking labor.... And then there is the gas and oils, the time to re-sharpen blades or replacing blades, and there there is the gas and oils into the pick up truck to haul said wood, and time to chop saw, split load unload stacking, no there is absolutely nothing free about it! BUT once you have your winters supply in, no you don't have a heating bill coming in except the fans off the wood burner. You can not put a price tag on having a home heated with wood, it is so amazing, I don't think I could ever go with out a wood stove, I would freeze LOL... Sometimes we might have to "heat the outside" by opening doors and windows, that's happened more than once :-) But if one was to pair fair labor costs and all the costs I mentioned I'm not entirely sure it's very much cheaper, but absolutely not free~
