Thanks for this video. My dad downloaded the original Quake Done Quick on his work computer back when I was a kid, when all my friends/family and I were all playing a lot of Quake. It was the first time we'd ever heard of speedrunning and the most mind blowing thing we'd ever seen. It will always be one of my favourite moments in the history of gaming ❤️

Thanks! Yep I'll never forget the first time I saw QDQ either :)

QDQ was a lot of people's intro to speedrunning. The guys who did the original were way beyond talented and … I'm so floored by the current play I'm just speechless. I was never even remotely approaching "good" at the game casually. To speedrun it? Yikes. It managed to instill a love of speedrunning in me that continues to this day, but I'm not going to ever be more than a spectator.

there's a special place in my heart for qdq because when i was in high school, with 28.8k internet, no cable, and no way to stream videos, they were something i could watch while eating snacks when i got home from school. they blew my mind every time i watched them, and it felt so cozy, like watching an older sibling play games

I tried so hard to get on the QdQ team back in the day. Every time I submitted a run it was immediately demolished by one of the better players. I wish I had the dedication to get better at speedrunning. At least they gave me a "participation" award and put me in the credits for Scourge done Slick, lol. Quake speedrunning has and will always be incredibly satisfying to watch. Thanks for your detailed breakdowns. Your channel is awesome.

Great video! The movement from these runners is just beautiful. Hard to keep up with QDQ projects when a lot of us that watched the first releases when they came out are in our 40s now. =)

Cool video, 100% runs are so complex; so easy to miss some of the insane shots or off screen kills you highlighted.

I always love seeing the E4M3 optimisations. I spent months in this map back in the day teaching myself to bunny hop and rocket boost, and I remember watching your demo back in 2006 and revisiting the map to try and copy some of your movements. A speedrunner I will never be, but it's always mindblowing to see these talented and dedicated people shaving little bits of time off!

In my world, speed running started with Quake (QuakeDoneQuick). I played console fighting games and some side scrollers but min/maxing games never made sense to me until I played Quake and saw the speed running that came out of that.

Thanks mate, for helping me appreciate the depth of that beautiful series of demos. You even answered a question I didn't know: that they carry over stats from levels.

I suspect that the more recent QDQ videos are underrated simply because they are so hard for a newcomer to follow. So I massively appreciate these videos that replay the runs in slow motion and explan what is happening.

I used to love watching Quake Done Quick/Quicker/Quickest, and completely missed that video dropping in 2020! Happy to find it via you now, and love hearing your insights as always, makes me appreciate the skill displayed even more than I otherwise would have, as someone who has never tried speedrunning Quake myself.

Very cool commentary, and the breaking down and illustrating those things eg the narrow window things are super cool. I remember once encountering the lightning bug on END at the conclusion of a NH all of quake personal best attempt. I think I panicked and alerted a vore which moved off its spawner. I had a moan and Stubby listened and ending up winning a Nolan for it later :)

I'was q3a player, i just played the 1st version like a noob, one time to have a look on the origine of what i liked so much to play. I just watched few of your video, and it's a real plaisure to discover this 1st game i missed, and see how far players push the limit still. Even 20years later. Your video are very well made, the narration is damn good. It's a good video to discover & enjoy a game never played. Great job dude, you seem to be the Wirtual of quake ! (without music :p)

I remember getting one QDQ or another in video format on a magazine cover disk, and that would have been reasonably near to the original game's release. Amazing to hear people kept chipping away at and renewing the project.

I wonder what the monsters think. "Im a badass dude with a grenade launcher in one hand and a chainsaw in the other, nothing will get past me!" Ten seconds later 30 of his friends are dead, his enemy has gone through the portal and then he gets a bunch of nails to the face in the intermission.

And to think they recently discovered an exploit with thunderbolt that allows them to kill some enemies out of bounds or out of reach, literally saving aprox 23 seconds on final boss, so i wonder if anyone will try to use that bug on an actual run, considerig how incredibly difficult it is to use, but also, the benefits it brings, at least on specific levels. Edit: and few minutes later they actually used such bug on this run. Cool!

Oh wow … just watching this after all this time! A couple of times I had DREAMS set it E1M4 and E1M8 … fix bug, must fix bug. Why bug not there? Bug was there … bug is back, must fix bug … 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 Never did find the cause for E1M8. Adding some magic value padding to a few key structures to detect corruption ultimately made the corruption no longer happen without fixing it. Some weird structure alignment issue? Probably, but … Intel architecture doesn't have data alignment. Unless it does? Huh-I now have an idea where … huh. I now know why, not that anybody cares.
