I second this. A neighbor has one and they are really nice birds. He's a biter too, but very smart and talks. I have handled birds most of my life (budgies in my case) and am used to them. They take more work than people realize, some birds more than others. And cages require a LOT of cleaning. :)

My quaker steps up most reliably when I sing her a son I made up about stepping up and being a good bird...lol...she is not food motivated...but even when she starts out not wanting to step up....I sing and it works...even in her cage. I always want a good step u in case of emergency . My bigger birds just generally step up when asked. Quakers are such awesome little birds!

I bought a quaker from a pet store and the person working said that he doesn't like and bites everyone so I got him anyways. Took about 2 months with me spending time with him in a room holding him and showing that his biting doesn't hurt me. And then never bit me again and was showering with me and also got away once from someone else's stupidity. Flew right back to me when I saw him in the tree that day.

Boy do I know that firsthand regarding trying to be the right family for the bird. Have the same species just different sexes. Doing the exact same things with both. Loki is wonderful & Rune is a flying velociraptor. Hopefully Kim can help us make it work! We’re making small improvements due to her suggestions and waiting for our next consultation to see where we go next. We would have been lost without all of your help!

My Quaker parrot Precious Baby girl does bite on occasion. My responsibility is to identify what gets her into this mode and avoid it. Quakers are very loving birds who bond with one and tolerate others. They are very playful and love to try the patience of their flock mates. My girl enjoys stealing my soft glass case, paper towels that I'm using, or anything else that is mine.

should I give away my Galah because she bites? birds are like miniature dinosaurs! 🤣 that's why a I bought a bird with a small beak. my bird starts nipping me to tell me "I'd like to go back to my cage now". she's got the mentality of a precocious human toddler. I can see being fearful of a bite or attack from a large bird like a Macaw, because they could send you to the emergency room. but small to medium size? It would be like buying a miniature pony for your kids and selling it because it nipped at them. about 90% of miniature ponies are nippy. it's simply how they are and you could beat them with a stick, but they don't care. it's a challenge that they relish, and part of what makes them so damned cute and interesting.
@tzxazrael
@tzxazrael Жыл бұрын
yup! they don't have hands, so they use their beak for a lot of things instead. anyone who wants to get a bird but thinks "he'll NEVER bite or nip me!" probably needs to learn more about birds first. but also there's a big difference between a gentle nibble for attention, and an "i want to hurt you to make you stop" bite. sounds like you've got a pretty good relationship with your galah. 💕

My bonded pair of Quakers started calling to Jasper as soon as I started this video. These were definitely biters when I brought them home. I got a nice step up for the first time from Bambi. They are older birds so progress is slow. Best times is with the laughing contests. Finally found a sometime treat. Multi -grain bread cubes(fresh).

So true! Just because a bird seems to be one way with one family, doesn't mean it is that way with others. I am currently birdsitting to adopt what was described as a noisy, extremely nippy bird. I actually found him to be a sweet boy that just craves tons of human attention. He would just get overly excited hence the unintentional hard bites and also had developed separation anxitey hence the noise and incessant and increasing shrieking. His original owners were going through a hard time dealing with the noise and thought that was just how he was going to be But I found him highly trainable and with time, by addressing the underlying causes, he won't feel the need to exhibit those behaviors as much. In fact, he has already started to adjust his behavior and make improvements the first week he came to stay with me. I was anticipating the worst but was pleasantly surprised. Definitely a great companion bird.

Several reps she raised her hand as she backed away, Jasper cued on that..maybe as he steps down on the perch after the treat, she should make a formal step of lowering her hands so he can see that, and only raise her hand when she cues him for flight..

Very interesting to see this training session where the treats are given away from the owner. 10 months ago I took in a 6 year-old Quaker who was on his 4th home ( I am No 5, poor little chap deserved a Happy Ever After I thought) He was caged almost all the time, screamed loudly when his needs went unmet and was an occasional biter. Most of these problems resolved and he has been free flying since the first week. Only uses his cage for food and exercise. 8:38 8:41 Trained him the meaning of 'No' but with a huge amount of love. But thanks for this video as I will now try some of these techniques.

My green Quaker looks like jasper. He was a biter. I have taught him not to bite. But training him is not easy. He doesn’t like any food enough to work for it. The only toy he plays with is a set of 3 rings I have on the side bars of his cage.

I have had my Quaker since 2014 after the death of my husband. I had dogs then and now it's just me and Brubeck. He does have 20 - 30 words and is in half of a large flight cage. I give him fruits, veggies, filtered water, rarely pieces of chips or crackers. I think I'm not doing him justice because he's basically in his cage but with me wherever I am in the house. I want him to be happy and not bite. He's cage aggressive and unless I'm cleaning his cage (after which I'm told, "good girl, good girl!), he comes after my hand. I'm thinking of providing a perch like in the video to encourage him to leave the cage and use the perch..like in front of a window so he sees the goings-on outside. I'd like for us to be better friends. How can I help "US?"

Every bird is different, so just watching this I know this will unfortunately not work with the current bird I am training. The separation anxiety is so intense with this new bird that he chooses company above all else, over any treat I have tried. I already changed his diet and he only gets treats when training and exhibiting encouraged behaviors. But he will drop a treat to fly over to me if he thinks I am leaving him/the room. Going to have to think of another method to get him to stop flying after me constantly and be okay with a few moments by himself without having to lock him in his cage.

So cute. Unfortunately mine is a bitter and attacker. I let him out of te cage for a few hours every day even though that means I will probably get attacked and bitten. I have target trained, trick trained and softly sing. Still attacks me. My other birds never bite. I feel so badly for him because I obviously don't understand him. Oh..he will not step up.

Hey great video once again. I NEED HELP...... I have just acquired a scarlet macaw to join my flock and the situation is he was being boarded at a local pet store for 9 months in a back room. He has not seen daylight, been held out of his temporary smaller cage for 9 months. I was told that before this he was very social did some tricks and would go to anyone. Well he is not that bird now he is very stand offish nervous and nippy. He almost acts feral I'm taking it slow and not pressuring him. Do you think he will go bac to being the great bird I was told he once was? Do you have any advise on how I should proceed? Thank You, Joe

but.... how do we go back if we've gotten to this point with our own pets? It seems like it can be an uphill impossible battle.... might even be easier to swap birds with someone with the same issue it seems x)
@tzxazrael
@tzxazrael Жыл бұрын
step 1, identify what's upsetting them. most birds are PREY animals, so being aggressive isn't their nature. they're being defensive or territorial, trying to protect themselves or something from "an invader" (aka, you). biting is usually a last resort, when their softer signs are just being ignored. swapping with someone else, particularly without identifying/resolving the existing issue, is just going to get you (eventually) a 2nd biter.

Hey community, I adopted a Quaker Parrot couple of weeks ago , I’m obviously working on bonding with him, he has great behaviour however he doesn’t like to be on an stand, he is stubborn to get off my shoulder and has been quite tricky to put him in his cage as he climbs back my other shoulder, he doesn’t care when I try to give him treats to put him in his cage and also he doesn’t go on perch he just bites the stick or push it away I also tried to use treats here but he ignores them . Seems that is a year old bird, we couldn’t get much information about him as he was found . Any advice would be much appreciated 😌🦜❤️
