Those KoRail switchers have been at NRE in mt Vernon for probably 10yrs. I figured they wouldn't make it back in service anywhere

I’m a retired railroad mechanic. In my past I’ve worked on locomotives with inline, 6-cylinder engines: RS-1, S-1, S-2, etc. ALCo designed the carbody for ease of access to the heads for maintenance; the roof hatches were spaced for that. How am I supposed to do a head change or power assembly swap with a D/B assembly in the way? I think I know what they were trying to accomplish and we know who the customer is. CSX has SD50s on the roster. The D/B grid is NOT over the prime mover. And the radiator is already larger. Even after all that the end product is still an anemic 2300hp. Is juice really worth the squeeze?

SD23EDM's are so strange due to their massive radiators which make it look like wings from planes and their designs should've been upgraded by the National Railway Equipment Company, not WABTEC tbh

Can't Progress Rail upgrade these engines, and do they even upgrade these engines? The SD70MACe exists, who rebuilt them, and why can't they rebuild the SD40s?

@@harrisonofcolorado8886 CP went with the Progress Rail rebuild, SD32ECO. NS and CSX went with in-house rebuilds, SD40-3. UP’s in-house rebuild is the SD40N. There are options. I cannot see this one catching on.

Cursed fact about the ET23s is that due to their Wabtec prime movers these locomotives have been transformed from EMDs into GEVOs. This also explains the radiators resembling GEVO radiators.

Thanks for the video and commentary. I'm not too keen on the shortened Body of the Wabtec SD40-2 rebuilds. The larger Radiator Grills I can accept because of Emissions Laws compliance. However, it is testament to the SD40-2 design, that they are being upgraded and not scrapped. It is just a great shame that Progress Rail are unable to do this work themselves, instead of GE. Not keen on the Amtrak livery with the red front and black mid-band, I feel that the colours are too harsh and that it is only the white dividing stripes that are maintaining a contrast. The UP train locos looked good. I read that the MoPac did not request D/Brakes as an economy measure and it is interesting to note that UP are ok to still use these units.

I call the CSX ET23DCMs "Franken-GEVOs". They just Frankensteined a GEVO prime mover into an SD40-2. These are also the first Tier 4 diesel with DC traction motors. I am surprised that 50+ year-old locomotives are being rebuilt with modern prime movers. I thought GE/Wabtec would make a whole new replacement loco for yard and local power. I am surprised that ex-Korail SW1001 returned to America, but we have yet to see one of them go to a railroad museum.

I wouldn’t be surprised if WABTEC made a completely new locomotive with this prime mover with a GEVO style car body and easy access to the engine. With a choice of 4 motors, 6 motors, or six axle with 4 motors.

Your loving the sound doesn't do a thing to make diesel locomotives less polluting. Replacing the 645 with a power plant that produces less emissions does.

You are also talking about 50 year old engines - the 645's were amazing. But they are mechanical, and mechanical will always fail. That they lasted 50 years (being rebuilt) is a testimony to their greatness. Another fact - at 2300 hp, this is basically an SD38. When you remember that the major builders stopped making low hp units, it is a testimony to the greatness of the SD40-2 - that it can be rebuilt to tier 4 standards. If proven successful, this locomotive could last 50 more years. 100 years of service life? Impressive.

What i think of ET23/SD23EDMs? ... You know when a cat flattens its ears when it is *not happy* with something? Yeeah, that... That's about how it makes me feel. I wonder how CSX likes them...

Okay I'm a little confused. At 9:41 mark, the UP3051 is something I've never seen before. RRpicturearchives (Jan 1, 2017) identifies this as an EMD SD40-2 which is not true as this locomotive is 1.5 times longer than the old SD40's. The UP1983 before it identifies as an EMD SD70ACe however the radiator doghouse which this one has a rounded front looks totally different than the SD70ACe's I've seen in the past. They are both definitely EMD units but what??? I cannot positively identify either one.
