For those wondering... the song was released in 1965. That show, might have been from the early 1970's but the song is definitely from the mid-1960s. I grew up in the 1960's and 70's...The Mamas and The Poppas were very popular...had a lot of great hits, and Mama Cass, the heavy set girl, she went on to have some successful solos. She made a hit out of a John Denver song called Leaving on a Jet Plane and also she has a Beautiful song that was meant to encourage people to try for their dreams... it's called "Make Your Own Kind of Music"

The mamas and the papas only performed from 1965-1968. John and Michelle Phillips we’re married at the time (tall dude and blonde girl). The other two were Mama Cass Elliott and Denny Doherty. All have passed away except for Michelle Phillips. She still performs. She had a daughter Chynna Phillips who was in a band called Wilson Phillips, Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson were the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, another California band formed in the 60’s.

They blended perfectly well with their harmonies together and their original songs. Listen to some more of their songs: great music, like "Young Girls are Coming to the Canyon" or "Go Where You Wanna Go" or "Monday, Monday".

This song has got this call and response thing going. You got the one main verse being sung. Then you got the other members repeating that lyric in harmony. And this pretty much flows until you get to the bridge of the song where it is all sung as one verse, then you get the instrumental interlude and then a repeat of the first part with a slight change of the lyrics. Quite nice actually. It’s very catchy, and The Mama’s & The Papa’s were brilliant when it came to harmony and doing stuff like this.

This song reminds me of all the things my parents must have experienced when they first immigrated to CA from the Ireland and across the states in the late '60s. Their song Creeque Alley is a catchy tune and it tells the story of their formation & rise to fame and also the general sense what it was like as a struggling musician in the 60s. Love the Mamas & The Papas...They were really heavy into LSD and there was lots of rumours surrounding Mama Cass' untimely death.

He would work on tunes late at night and one morning brought her the first verse. ...Michelle Phillips wrote the lyrics, 'Well, I got down on my knees, and I pretend to pray,' but Cass Elliot had been singing 'I began to pray' until corrected by Phillips when they were touring. In the early 60's, there was a whole folk scene in NY and other cities, kids with (mostly) guitars, getting together and singing. The four of them met there and got together in the mid-60's in this band.

These three daughters formed the group Wilson Phillips. Check out their song, "Hold On." It was played at the end of the movie "Bridesmaids" in the wedding reception scene.

The Mamas and the Papas were formed by husband and wife John Phillips (formerly of the New Journeymen) and Michelle Phillips, and Denny Doherty (formerly of the Mugwumps). Both of these earlier acts were folk groups active in 1964 and 1965. The last member to join was Cass Elliot, Doherty's bandmate in the Mugwumps, who had to overcome John Phillips' concern that her voice was too low for his arrangements, that her physical appearance would be an obstacle to the band's success and that her temperament was incompatible with his (Elliot struggled with obesity all her life, and felt deeply insecure about her looks). The group considered calling itself the Magic Cyrcle before switching to the Mamas and the Papas, inspired by the Hells Angels, whose female associates were called "Mamas"!

One of the great groups from the fabulous 60's. The Mamas & The Papas can really sing and harmonize. This is a great summertime song. One of my other favorites from them is " I SAW HER AGAIN LAST NIGHT"

I’m a seventy yr young white lady who grew up and partied to all the songs you react to. I’m glad to see young people rediscovering this music. Most of it iconic. You have to remember they didn’t have auto tune or electronics to clean up their voices. It was what you hear is what you get. Didn’t have MTV or VH1 to play music videos on. What we got to see was live performances. MTV didn’t come into being until August 1981. The Mamas and the Papas also did “Monday Monday”. Great song and lyrics. The chubby chick is/was Cass Elliot (RIP 1974), the shorter guy is/was Denny Doherty (RIP 2007). The tall guy is/was John Phillips (RIP 2001), the blonde was his wife Michelle Phillips. Michelle is the only one still alive. John and Michelle's child is Chynna Phillips of the group Wilson Phillips. John Phillips was also the father of Mackenzie Phillips, and Bijou Phillips the actors.

Never was a big Mamas and Papas fan, but have to admit this song kicked ass. Jose Feliciano was a blind singer/song writer from Peurto Rico that did an awesome version of this song and the Doors Light My Fire. Worth a listen.
