This past spring I attended the FRC North Carolina State Championships and got to talk to a bunch of the teams. If you've never heard of FIRST Robotics, you're in for a real treat, because this competition is AWESOME. (If you haven't seen the hub video for all these interviews, check it out first! • The annual engineering... )
These teams, thousands of them, have only about 2 months to design, build, and test robots to play a brand new game before the competitions begin, and then their work is put to the test! It would be a lot for any professional engineer, but these kids are still in high school! It's pretty incredible.
This video is the complete pit interview with FIRST Team 3737. Enjoy!

If you're interested in finding a team or attending an event, here's the official team search from FIRST:

And if you want to know more about any specific team (like a link to their website) you can probably find it on Blue Alliance:

This is a world map that shows events and teams. I'm not sure how accurate it is because it doesn't look official, but it's a lot easier to search by eye! (and it also doesn't include the other FIRST programs like FLL and FTC (FRC was featured in the video))

Thanks for posting these videos! I don't have a chance to visit these competitions at the moment, so I feel very fortunate to see the interesting designs, the thought process, and how they work in action.

Hey, I'm from team 3132 in Australia. I think it's awesome you're giving FIRST some coverage as its such an amazing program that has taught me so many engineering skils!

At 2:40, is a cyclic gear the same as a planetary gear set? If so, I think you featured one of those in your video on 8727. I think the high reduction gearbox for 8727's climber is actually a multi-stage planetary gearbox. We used to use gearboxes like that when I was in FRC.

The cycloid gearbox is entirely different to a planetary gearbox. There are some good videos on YT that explain their operation. We actually do a slight variation where the posts are fixed and the whole outside rotates. We also have three cycloid gears inside, offset by 120 deg each, to eliminate out of balance forces. This also leads to near 100% tooth contact (roughly 1/3 per gear), something a planetary gearbox cannot achieve and which allows a predominantly 3D printed design to take much higher forces without breaking.

great stuff! It is really amazing that they are able to design these in just a couple (2-3?) months. I went to the website, but there's a lot of material to sort thru. Can you provide a link to the "Rules" for this competition somewhere?

well, for the game this year there is a game animation here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gs2enKibrp_Hc4E.html&ab_channel=FIRSTRoboticsCompetition if you want to more about the process of designing the robot during build season, i would highly recommend you check out one of the FIRST documentaries, such as this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d5h8kqafxr7doKs.html&ab_channel=TeamRembrandts4481

They need to be built in 6 weeks

@@SnowyValk It often takes 24 hours to 3D print a part. And many hours to design and machine metal parts. Given the number of parts, how can it be built in 6 weeks? I guess maybe if the build was prepped far in advance? Are there "pre-made" designs that students are using to save time?
@w4drone720
@w4drone720 Жыл бұрын
@@marcfruchtman9473 we occasionally use cots parts but in our shop we have 3 3D printers, a CNC machine, raw materials, and electronics. Smaller prints usually take 2-6 hours, larger prints kinda depend on the complexity of the print. We use rapid prototyping to ensure our designs work before we build them.

... 1. Who doesn't know about required safety regulations at this point? 2. Those robots are designed to rapidly lift and shoot balls... Probably some hazards there, and eye protection is the minimum. 3. Did you really have to ask this question? Or did you just want to try to belittle some kids?
