Fun fact - Mike Kerr actually uses a bass guitar instead of a normal guitar and does all the bass and "guitar" parts. He's also responsible for all the backing vocals. In a live setting the backing vocal parts are either triggered by Ben on the drums or, like recently, there is a third guy on the keys who helps them with all the extra parts. They are usually quite busy during a live set, especially Mike who has to manouvre between the pedals as he's basically acting as both the guitar and bass player in the band. It's definitely worth seeing them live and it never ceases to amaze me how much noise they can make being basically a duo.

Justin, Now that you’ve done Royal Blood, you might want to check out cleopatrick. They toured with RB in 2021, but I already had tickets to see Jerry Cantrell, and couldn’t miss that show. I keep hoping they’ll come back to San Diego. We hardly ever get good bands, though I did get to see Wolf touring his first album. That was awesome. I truly appreciate Royal Blood. Their style is consistent, kick-ass modern bluesy rock with new production elements. You get the feel of a live band and it’s really great to hear vocals that don’t feel like every single line has been so hyper produced that it doesn’t breath at all. AUTOTUNE be the work of the devil.

I saw RB live recently. They brought in other musicians, so it was a full band, and they were 🔥! They were also in a good mood which was infectious. The audience was really happy. The opening band should have been cleopatrick, instead of some punk chicks, though.

Lights out is great, too! I didn't know he bi-amped, it has a distinctive sound. He definitely has an octave pedal and a phase and a fuzz. but maybe also reverb and some sort of compression pedal, just because everyone has one on their board, I swear!.
@SuziQ.
@SuziQ. Жыл бұрын
@@aprilkurtz1589 , “Ten Tonne Brick” is good, too. Back when I discovered them, there was a lot of discussion about what Mike uses to get the sounds he gets from his bass, and he’s tried to hide it, but fans near the stage have noticed a lot of different tools he uses. He has said all along that he routes his bass to either one or two guitar amps and a bass amp. We know about some of the pedals. I missed a chance to see them last year (with cleopatrick, who were inspired by RB), because I already had tickets to a different concert that night. I hope they come back soon. Next up: Disturbed, with Breaking Benjamin; and Highly Suspect (I don’t remember who’s opening for them). Jinger is on one of those shows, but they’re not my cup of tea.

@@aprilkurtz1589, I got tickets to see Royal Blood. It’s going to be a busy week, because I’m seeing Wolf (Mammoth WVH) again, and Highly Suspect, as well as RB. The summer was only Disturbed with BB (and Jinger, which I deliberately missed because Irvine in the summer is a PITA of a drive, and seeing the opening band = massive traffic). RB is playing close to home, at the Del Mar fairgrounds on November 27th. The others are downtown at the HOB, which means a $30 parking charge, but I love that venue. I do wish more bands would play San Diego. I wanted to see The Darkness, but driving to LA is a pain.

Love Royal Blood! 🖤🤟 Saw them live at the Eden Project in 2017 and it was F*cking Awesome! For an outdoor gig, the sound quality, the atmosphere & how hard that duo rocked that night was absolutely mind blowing! Definitely recommend seeing them live. And yes, it was Ben doing the backing vocals. I unintentionally stopped following Royal Blood after How Did We Get So Dark. Surprised to learn that the last track of Highway to Hell was Love Hungry Man? Always thought Night Prowler was the last track on that AC/DC album. Also worth mentioning that by 1980 disco was considered dead, and in the Eighties electronic dance music emerged. Cannot really say the 'E' took me out of my 'familiarity' because Mountains At Midnight clearly uses the key of E. Do not think that Blur is actually modern punk, rather, modern pop-punk has it origins in bands like Green Day. Drums as near as I could count are beating out common time. Nice to see Royal Blood on JHRA.

Off topic, and I know you’ve already done 2 sleep token vids, but you might want to have a listen to Ascensionism or Take me back to Eden. Pretty epic and a lot of variety within the tracks.

'Bout time Justin. Big, big fan of this band since the first record. Their last album my least fav but this new stuff sounds great so far. They bring it live too.

I think this song is interesting, and a development in their sound, because Mike is actually playing chords on the bass in this song. I think his signature orange Fender is half guitar strings, half bass strings, which would lend itself to the chord playing tekkers

Wow, is that actually superior to "The Ocean" by augmenting the chords? Nice work, Royal Blood!

Gotta give this a good listen. Certain vocals lines remind me of Corrosion of Conformity in a strange kind of way.

Justin can i ask a question, have you ever met Ricky Gervais and if so how was it? I listen to a lot of his old radio stuff and podcasts most evenings when i goto sleep (not due to it being boring) and when he plays your songs on the radio show frequently he always says glowing things about how much he loves your music.

That whole AC/Disco thing a) was really funny but b) got me wondering why we categorize music by genre? Is Def Leppard metal, rock, glam, pop? They're all those things according to Wikipedia, but who cares? Def Leppard sounds exactly like Def Leppard. If you like them, good. If you don't like them, good. What's the point of describing how they sound to someone who hasn't heard them? Is it for marketing purposes? Gatekeeping purposes? Or is it just because people like to try to sort things into neat and clear categories?

@Diane M Yes. All of those reasons.

@@phoenixgirl70 But it ends up being a weird circular argument because if you have a band that you can fit into four different genres, it describes very little about what their music sounds like. Or even within one genre, you can say someone's a pop artist so that's what they sound like, but that doesn't mean that Bing Crosby's sound has much in common with Taylor Swift's sound just because they're both pop artists. Sure, their careers are 90 years apart, but they're both pop. I'm old enough to have heard of emo music before I actually heard it, and once I did, I was surprised that it was straight up rock, as far as I can tell. Meanwhile, no one calls Def Leppard an emo band even though they sometimes write about bringin' on the heartbreak and whatnot. None of the genre labels have any consistency, which is why I tend to zone out when people start debating it.
