@RhonJohns

@@blurayffan66 Completely agree, the album is plagued by studio work that takes away from their rawness, despite LAFS being a copy of Blackout. They got Pop-y here with RYLAH, BCN and SLY, and it covers up songs like Coming Home, Im Leaving You and Bad Boys Running Wild. However their true pop sound came from Savage Amusement, its almost taken straight out of pop scene leaving hardly anything heavy. I would say Crazy World revived them, because Jabs got his juicy Soldano tone, but then all anyone knows that album for is Wind Of Change/Send Me an Angel or maybe even Tease Me Please Me forgetting about the entire album. Roth's era was fantastic, and Jabs' era of Lovedrive, Blackout, Animal Magnetism and World Wide Live is their legendary zenith with tons of underrated bangers from 79-90.

I’m a Gen Xer. I was a casual fan in the 80’s. I was on a Baltic cruise in June of 2007 touring St. Petersburg. There was a grandstand being set up in the main square by The Hermitage museum. I asked someone what was happening and they said the Scorpions were having a free concert. I stayed for the concert, almost missing the departure of my cruise ship. Hearing the Scorpions play The Winds Of Change in that setting was one of the most emotional experiences of my life.

They are German, but they have always written their music with English lyrics. Klaus Meine, the singer, once said that "English is the proper language for Rock and Roll." The song "Blackout" is a good one, and pretty much anything off of Animal Magnetism. "Lovedrive" or "Lovin' You Sunday Morning" would also be a good choice. They were also known for provocative album covers on "Animal Magnetism," and especially "Virgin Killer."

Your next 80s rock band needs to be Tesla. Jeff Keith is a great vocalist, and they had a number of great albums in the late 80s. If you want a band that's good hard rock, but not hair metal or glam metal, check out Tesla. "Little Suzi" is a good entry point, "Love Song" is a masterpiece, "Comin Atcha Live" is a banger. They even basically invented the whole "unplugged" movement with their "Five Man Acoustic Jam" album. Worth checking out.

Yes, "Rock You Like a Hurricane" for the Scorpions is what "Thunderstruck" is to AC DC. That is to say, one of the biggest hits, overplayed but still important to their history and for attention to new fans (at the time of release). But fans of either band will probably tell you that every other song they do is better than that hit. Lol. I would recommend you consider Quiet Riot, "Metal Health (Bang Your Head)" to look at early 80's hard rock/metal.

A&A did react to UFO "Rock Bottom" with Scorpions Rudolph Schenker's younger brother, the legendary " Michael Schenker".on lead guitar. I would definitely suggest revisiting UFO, except from their Live album "Strangers in the Night" check " Lights out in London" though to hear him at his absolute peak check. "Captain Nemo"(instrumental) from his solo album " Built to Destroy" circa 83 Minds will be blown!! He is the European equivilant of Eddie VH in terms of groundbreaking and influence. Not as known as EVH to the American public but most definitely known among guitarists (and musicians).

Definitely Sails of Charon. I went to several of their concerts in the 80's but I think their 80s stuff is a little too commercial. The 70s stuff is much more raw and less made for radio. The Zoo is a little too cachunk-cachunk-cachunk for my tastes. And while you're at it, you need to return to UFO. You did Rock Bottom a year or so ago, but you need to do Lights Out from the same "Strangers in the Night" live album. Definitely a banger.

Of all of the artists I’ve seen live, there have only been a couple that were such well-oiled machines musically that the way they sounded live was exactly the way they sounded on vinyl. One was Boston. The other was The Scorpions. They are absolutely amazing live. If you dive in to more Scorpions, I highly recommend you hit songs from their 1979 album, “Lovedrive.” Check out “Loving You Sunday Morning,” “Is There Anybody There?,” and “Holiday.” As far as early 80s rock, check out Randy Rhoads-era Ozzy.

Fly to the Rainbow is a great album throughout. My personal favorite. Came out in 74'. The Scorpions are often overlooked in terms of impact of early Heavy Metal. As a general progression it's the common Sabbath leading to Priest then to NWOBHM with in particular Iron Maiden. In the 7os with Sabbath and Priest leading the way and Purple and Zepplin playing on the fringes of Heavy Metal. The Scorps were putting out bangers left and right like nobodys business. So Often Overlooked.

I've been a Scorpions fan since '76 (15yrs old). On their first album Michael Schenker was 16-17 yrs old in 1972. You can pick any song from "Lonesome Crow" and you'll hear a prog-rock band in the influence of Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. By the time they hit the eighties Schenker was gone and they had a more commercial sound that eventually wears thin. I implore you, listen to ANYTHING from their first album and it will open possibilities from them you hadn't imagined them capable of after hearing their "stripper club library"of the later years.

I have been a fan of the Scorpions since about '79 after a friend turned my on to Tokyo Tapes. They were huge in Japan. (you guys will absolutely love their '70s catalog). Interesting fact, during the recording of Blackout, Klaus Meine required surgery on his vocal cords. He couldn't even speak before the surgery and they waited 9 months for him to recover. It was worth it. This is the album that broke the American mainstream and put them on the map. I've seen them at least five times back then and in 2010. One of the best was at Day on the Green at Oakland Coliseum in '85. They headlined with Ratt, Y&T, Metallica, Yngwie Malmsteen and some band named Victory. Scorpions and Metallica took the show. During Metallica there were like five mosh pits. Huge ones. The Scorpions were in their prime and headlining everywhere.

Early cuts like Polar Nights and Sails of Charon were awesome 70's bangers, then they switched lead guitarists from Uli Roth to Mathias Jabs for the late 70-early 80 releases, like the Lovedrive and Blackout albums.
