Scottish fence builders are made of tough stuff. Today we get a solid dose of Scottish ingenuity as we check out the fence building machines Jock Bryce and his family produce.

I love a man who thinks of all the reasons that things could go badly and builds something that prevents those things from happening. I Love the thought and experience gone into the design of it all. Counterbalance, Tool holders, Post Caps, Tilt and height control etc. Great job.

I worked with a bloke who made a fencing machine for his dad's fencing business in Biggar, Scotland. He mounted a post driver, plough and wire spool to an arm and mounted it to the back of a tractor. It meant he could drive a post in, move forward while ploughing a trench and automatically feeds fencing into the trough (to stop animals digging or pushing under) then back filled. Driver jumps out, staples wire to posts and moves along again. He had bought an ex army 4 tonner Bedford 4x4 with the aim of mounting it all to the middle of that so there was the load bed to carry posts and wire. I know he tested the set up on a tractor but don't know if he ever figured out the mounting on the 4 tonner.

I love the fact that the machines are so well optioned for lunch carrying. It's a consideration that seems to be forgotten so often these days but, as my grandmother said to me: An army marches on its stomach. (She made sure I had my lunch with me in the morning every day well into her 90's)

Couldn’t help but notice the U-clamps on the rope, that holds the driver weight (16:00). In the US, we always attach those the other way around. The adage we learn, to help you remember which way they go is: “Never saddle a dead horse.” They had the saddle on the dead end of the line for both clamps. 🤷‍♂

No pissing around with them wee fence posts over there, just drive a telephone pole in the ground. Nice concept for making life easier. Around here you may have to change out the hammer(s) to get more than 2' into the ground before you hit bedrock.

Jocks theory about hammer weight is only right to certain extent. Less strokes does = less wear. However the extra weight creates wear of it own on pulleys pins bushes and swivel. Also upsets the balance on the track machine as base unit is fairly light weight. On steep rough terrain that extra weight is a disadvantage. For proper hard ground on a regular basis and easy terrain the 500kg is ok but anything else 400kg is more than plenty. The top of post will burst at same point regardless of weight. Also the automatic telemast as he says gives you full height every time but it doesn’t give you the versatility of manual telemast. The solotrak for example will drive a post in below ground level when lowered yet take a 14ft post when raised. And can also be raised or lowered to creep under branches etc. I’ve worked both machines and personal preference is solotrak. Both have pros and cons. Solotrak carries it posts on centre of machine making it more stable has post driver hanging out back which can make it rear heavy. Bryce has post driver positioned on centre but posts way out front. Again my preference is solotrak as you can tilt post driver forward to transfer weight to a certain extent. But on bryce you can’t move post loading area. Solotrak also has netting tensioner which is a massive plus. Both fantastic machines though both designed and built by very practical and intelligent men who were fencers through and through before going into world of post driver building. If you get the chance try both before purchasing because there really will be one that suits you and your terrain better than the other.

Does it come with a down hole hammer option? We need a machine that can do everything Downhole hammer, auger, pounder, barbed wire runnings of 3, bottom wire, even a mesh and or cement hog be sweet if it could roll out mesh like our attachment for the excavator.. The job we are on is hell, that machine is like our nodwell with a spinning body but all you need to do is turn the seat around that's pretty cool. You think that machine can handle Terrain like this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l9aoksems7vWdZs.html this place takes the tracks off like it's nothing it looks like there is dirty but it's really rock right on the ocean so we use auger first to get what we can get then we come back with the down hole hammer and get 3-4 ft in solid rock.

So let me get this straight… it has a dinner plate made out of carburetor steel and a crumb vandalism shaft. Together they imitate a slow motion wood pecker. This results in a utility pole driver that isn’t tall enough to get to the top of a telephone pole to start with. Or, iffen you put a plumb-bob on it… you can peck out a square hole to put a round peg in the ground. Did I miss something? 🤔
