How do I update the TCON on the Hisense U8G?

Just bought this TV for my 5-year-old son to connect to his series x, bought it off of craigslist for $400 mint condition..not a single scratch or a scuff and in the original box. I myself have an LG CX which of course is better, and it should be for the price.. but for what I paid for it $400.. Hisense U8G is amazing.

I’ve been having motion issues with some streaming apps since I bought the 65” U8G which has been a bummer because this has otherwise been an amazing TV for the price. I knew it wasn’t my internet because the TV I replaced (Samsung KS8000) did not have this issue. I’ve done this and haven’t had the problem since thank you so much!!! Was looking around to see if anyone else had the issue and/or solutions. I’ve tried changing motion settings and nothings worked until I found this video. Thanks again!!!

Well i press up 4 times and got a pop up message saying "not supported". I have a 55u8g just brought it 2 days ago. I like the soap opera with setting smooth enabled but there are judders in some contents.

hi, thanks for the great tip, just curious if I was to buy a u8g now would it be preconfigured with this? Or still need to be updated? would you say this tv is good for a typical tv and streamer not much gaming for a fairly bright living room. not sure our eyes would notice the small things. thanks in advance

Honesty if you’re not planning on utilizing the 120hz, then it may be overkill other than the immense brightness consideration. It’s great for a bright room and handles reflections like a champ compared to other panels, but the premium cost is mostly for the extra FALD zones and the 120hz. If brightness and standard streaming is what you’re after, you may be able to save a ton and look at the older H9G with the 60Hz inputs.

$999 is an amazing price for the U8G! I wouldnt wait for the 2022 models personally as I'm honestly unsure about the MiniLED tech. No one has been able to get it right yet :(

I did this on my U8G, but after you do the update it allows you to do the update again. The TV restarts, but it allows you to repeat the process over and over again. Shouldn’t the option go away after it’s done? Can anyone else verify this?

Yes. It’s annoying but it continues to let you do the update even when it’s already applied rather than confirming it’s simply there already :(

I have the 55u7g with a 30 series card.... My white text looks rainbow colored and black text has blue tint... Or it's straight up blue sometimes... Any ideas why?

Honesty the motion isn’t great on the 55” Hisense. It’s much better on the 65” thanks to this update; however, there is no update for the 55”. The 55” is a great tv for the price and few TVs compare to its quality and feature set at its price point; however, if you have a little bit more money to invest then the motion is much better for content viewing on the C1

More of a risk if you watch a ton of sports and movies, or play games with a ton of static imagery. Really risky as a computer monitor. General viewing is fine.

My dad has the 55inch. Not sure if this update helps but with VRR and freesync on he gets crazy flickering on Xbox Series X/S. Would this help? Hopefully it comes to the 55inch if so

Flicker is normally a speed issue. Make sure you have your hdmi set to enhanced and that you’re using a high quality hdmi 2.1 cable. In the Xbox settings, you can check a box for enable 4:2:0, which lowers the chroma sub sampling bandwidth as a test to see if it performs better. Others have said on the 55” that port 4 is faster than port 3, as 3 also tries to do eARC at the same time.

@@qwazyd0gg I'll check out port 4! I'm using the hdmi 2.1 cable that came with my Xbox. On my Samsung NU800 im not getting any flickering issues at 4k 60 with VRR/freesync on, or even when its set to 1440p 120HZ with VRR on (its a 120hz panel just not at 4k) It feels like a TV issue to me but Im willing to try different things.

In my day of testing, I feel like it great improved; however, at the sacrifice of VRR and ALLM. I didn’t have an rtx card to check test patterns or font, but now that I do I may double back in it

Incredibly interesting, would this update never happen unless this was performed ? Why would they hide a quality upgrade to their TV in such a way rather than have up part of regular updates ? Does this also apply to the new U8H ?

I’m not sure if this applies to the H lineup. If they use the same TCON board than maybe; however, last year it only impacted the 65” model (not any other size). My thoughts are that firmware only impacts the main board itself, where as the TCON is a separate board entirely.

I’m in the US and about to buy the U8G 65 or 55 is on sale now again! Im not a gamer and not a techy and watch mostly live cable, sports and 24 frame cable movies and stuttering has been a freaking HUGE issue with me. Will this update fix this? I already returned a Samsung Q80T bc watching televised movies like “Ground Hog Day” was like blinking my eyes not matter what motion/jutter etc settings I used. Sports was hideous. I just don’t wanna go down this road again. Any ideas? Great informative video!

I have a friend/viewer who has 3 of these panels in his bar for sports and loves them. I’d go 65” since it has the ability to update the timing controller, which further improves motion handling.

You got it, it’s the timing controller update. There’s no finite control over it, it’s just a general and hidden away update.

@@qwazyd0gg Thanks! Rtings “Studder” ratings have kept me from upgrading to and nicer 65in mid priced TV for 15 months. Seem like all of the cheap TVs have less stutter but lack pic quality. My 10 yr old Plasma doesn’t even know what stutter is! Lol. I’m sitter here watching this cheap Roku $299 43in 2018 insignia and it even hardly stutters. Frustrating

How come you only do this tv a lot of ppl are struggling with the ug7 which the literally only difference is the dimming zones when you look at specs on box or packaging I went down the list and their practically identical now granted the ug8 says mini led but at hdr n 120 hz their pretty damn close both have 2.1 ports ect ! I’ve had issues when watching netflix my screen blurs or judders sometimes it’s perfect sometimes I have to unplug it which is kinda annoying after 750$

I only focused on the U8G as at the time it was the only panel I had on hand. I do now have the U7G as well. The only difference between the two TVs is the local dimming zones as they actually use the EXACT same panel and processor, and even the same software updates.

Anyway theirsa lot of PPL STRUGGLING WITH THIS AN HAVE THE UG7 n would appreciate that video from you and be able to get that true 120 hz that Hisense promised yesterday through customer support but they also confirmed that the TVS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME PROCESSOR AND EVERYTHING EXCEPT DIMMIN ZONES WHICH DOES NOT AFFECT PROCESSING OR OUTPUT OF THE TVS ON PS5 or Xbox

I don’t believe it was included within that update, if any it would have been M0217 that just came out that would have included it. Try a full power cycle and try again.

@@qwazyd0gg nope, i still dont get any pop up to update the tcon. I just read somewhere that i have to be on firmware L0721 in order for this to work, but i have no idea how to update my firmware since when i check for updates it tells me my system is up to date.

I really really want this TV so flipping bad because of the picture quality but as you and others have mentioned “The motion smoothing doesn’t like broadcast cable compression” stutter/judder/motion etc….same issue I had with Samsung Q80T and took it back last yr, had a great picture though still. Lol I know it’s not just a Hisense issue. So saying this, is there a 55-65in TV out there for us old school farts that motion isn’t a big issue watching 24f cable movies and sports? Like what about the Sony X90J? How about their motion in general? thanks!

You’ll notice motion handling on most VA panels doesn’t alway play well with broadcast content. It’s not terrible; however, it is noticable. If you’re looking for smooth all around, you’ll be looking for an OLED. I haven’t read much into MiniLED to know how they’ve been doing with motion.

@@qwazyd0gg Thank you. I’m not a text guy or know how credible rtings is, but how they explain stuttering….. their charts show that OLED’s are the worse for it, stuttering. Worse the cheap TVs. AmI getting caught up too much on Stutter and motion? Aren’t they basically the same?

It depends what your watching. Most broadcast watchers tend to watch sports, which is handled the best in an OLED thanks to the response timing.

@@rypods6891 i use the calibration settings that Quantum TV put together. I am nothing short of shocked at how good the picture looks in all modes. For sports, i was having issues with judder, especially football and hockey. With this timing control update and the calibration settings, the TV is awesome for sports and handles motion very well

I got this set within the last 2 weeks for $1k, 65” U8G. Pretty happy, except for scrolling text (ex. ticker) & rapid hand waving/movement. Scrolling text stutters a lot above a certain speed, & there’s ghosting on fast hand movement. I’ve applied the TCON update twice, & played with motion enhancement custom setting sliders. It’s still an issue on SDR/non-4K content. Is there anything else to tweak, or do I just need to wait for future updates/fixes? Thanks for the content on your channel

It depends on the content really. I go between custom settings (and specifically 10 and 9), and nothing at all. Try 10 and 9 custom, and then off completely and see which works better.

The TCON is the timing control board, which helps with motion. My only speculation is that because many of the TVs share the same main board and software updates, they may need to leave the TCON external to avoid applying it to panels with a different timing board

As far as I know this is for the North American u8 and u7 series with the 120hz panel and hdmi 2.1 ports.

Shoot, actually… correction time, lol. The creator studio app sucks for knowing what video the comment is on, and I just noticed that this is for the TCON video and not a firmware update video. The TCON update is only available for the 65 U8G. 55 U8G and all sizes of the U7G you’ll get an “unsupported” error”.

Can someone help me,I have a 55” hisense u8g Amd a series x.Do I have to turn hdr off in order to get 120hz in warzone Amd halo? Because when I hit the tv remote menu and back out it always says it’s 120hz but I’m not sure if that’s accurate

Sounds like you don’t have VRR enabled if it’s locked at 120. Verify VRR is enabled in the Tv and on the console

Absolutely. I have many videos showing the Xbox running in 120Hz VRR with HDR10 on my Hisense U8G. Make sure you have Enhanced Mode on in your input settings, are using input 3 or 4, and check your console settings.

First off thanks for covering a lot of the issues the U8G has there are very people chasing for actual answers like you are and I really appreciate it. Bought my U8G a month ago and it has looked fine should everyone do this update? Also is it true that if VRR on the Xbox is turned on and free sync is turned off on the tv then the VRR still works. When you exit the TV menu it shows a fluctuating FPS indicating it is. I can live without the 120 but VRR not working with local dimming would be a deal breaker for me so I hope so. Thanks man!

I would try to do it just to be safe. As far as I’m aware, the TCON update is not applied from the factory.

That I’m not sure. TMK the TCON update gets applied to the actual hardware, so I’m not sure if it gets downscaled if you factory reset it. The TCON update lets you check and apply at any time, so it’s hard to tell if it’s ever already installed or now :(

I have a Flickering problem in my u8g, only in some game like COD, an Gears, how can fix it? and this update no Works whit 55", maybe hisense dont care....

Try turning off Atmos and/or eARC to see if it’s a bandwidth issue. I’ve heard of flickering on port 3 but fine on port 4 for the HDMI input as well.

Im not to upset either way , because I have the 65 on its way for the family room , Im just thinking should I return this and just get two of the 65's and call it a day , unless u tell me there is a fix ... I have been doin research for months and watching your vids n these tv' s hands down are phenomenal

I have had many and tried about 3 others in 2 months like the vizio and also Samsung even an LG , BUT none had this quality specs , aslo the others had limitations in areas where the u8g had none ... A couple of bugs isnt a big deal as long as I can get them worked out ??? Honest Opinion!!!

Yeah, the international market got shafted due to regional restrictions on manufacturing. The international model has a 120hz panel, but only for internal apps as the hdmi ports are only HDMI 2.0 :(

I picked up the u8g and was SO impressed. But 2 things made me return it. It doesn't really do 4k 120hz and the Subtitles are 1500nits 😞

They’re addressing the 120hz 4K resolution bug. The beta was flawed and pulled, so I hope they get the kinks ironed out before official release.

They can’t address the issue because the Mediatek chipset can’t handle 4K 120hz. It can display it but downgrades the picture to 3840x1080.

That still does not help the degraded picture quality in 4K 120hz in HDMI enhanced mode with Series X, PS5 or PC.

They should share the exact same updates as the 65”, which is in the M06 or 07 range of updates now. I don’t have the newest as my contact left the company, so I’m still using my last update.

Had this tv for week loved the picture quality the brightness the contrast this tv looks incredible. The issue was the motion it was bad along with the ghosting and it cant seem to do 120hz on consoles or my pc without image looking degraded. Bought a LG C1 and have to say now is the time to switch to Oled especially with the superbowl sales going on the LG C1 is on sale and it blows this tv out of the water.

I agree, the degraded 4K 120hz is a major bummer. I have my hands on a new unreleased beta that is said to correct it, and will be testing it next week.

@@qwazyd0gg absolutely keep us updated on this. I just picked this TV up and despite the latest update and the TCON trick, the 4k HDR movies are ghosting pretty bad in dark scenes still. This could be a deal breaker and I am considering returning this TV, but fingers crossed there could be a resolution.

Mostly price to performance. It’s fairly accurate, VERY bright, and offers (mostly) fully featured advantages that consumers want from a modern TV at a fraction of the price of competing TVs. If it was double MSRP or more, it wouldn’t do near as well as it does at its current price, and honestly it still exceeds the quality and feature set of say a Sony or LG will leaving a lot of money left in your pocket.

I have the 55" U8G. I contacted support about the ghosting. They sent me an update file through email, and told me to install it using a flash drive. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to do anything and I'm now stuck waiting for further updates. If anyone is considering getting this TV, I do NOT recommend the 55".

I know the 55” does not have a separate TCON update and it will need to be updated through the standard Os. Let’s hope it gets resolved soon

Try to find some calibration settings online, and also try medium for your local dimming
