The sound is an audio setting you can turn off, it's for you to be able to tell if you are shooting slow speed, high or turbo. Otherwise people would just focus the camera and suddenly they are out of space on a 2TB card because they were accidently shooting 120 on silent mode.

Actually, shooting 120FPS RAW photos is more difficult than video because a photo has WAY more data per frame than a video frame, and it is also generally a much higher resolution. Like it's 6K here. 14 bit 6K 120FPS is insanity

i was at the event for the a9iii. the shutter sound is electronic, you can just turn it off and its silent. Theres also this other feature called precapture, if you half press the shutter it can store up to one second before you press the shutter. someone on stage did a demo of taking shots of birds before flight and then taking off.

yeah, the real deal wld be the mechanical iris that big that fast, its prob not possible due to physics, i mean i can be done, but you wld need a bigger device on the other hand, why wld anyone use mech shutter, when u can do it electricaly, with electronic control, it can be vairable, so when camera is stationary its off,but when accelerometaters sense movement, its on, bigger g force, more frames, etc, ofc,m with ml support, for learning your usage look, if i can think of this, im sure sony's eng have allready done that and, the clicking provides you with audible proof you are in that mode,its not for nothing, and its not stupid as bev growling, its part of the history of the camera those fast cameras before the transistor used mech shutters, usualy like a revolver, like the theater projectors did..

I have a couple hummingbird feeders during the summer and they “buzz” me sometimes when I’m sitting outside. Not like they’re going to attack, more like saying hello. It sounds very insectlike. My guess is that the noise from the Turbo boost button is just an audio cue so you know you are using it. (so you know you are using it vs the slower one and so you know how long you are on it, filling your storage up...) And probably has a setting to turn it off so when you are shooting hummingbirds you don't scare them off...

Except it turns out petrol [gasoline] and diesel have a limited shelf life. So the world of Mad Max, folk would be actually fighting over wind turbines and solar panels, not cans of rancid fuel. Far easier to generate electricity than it is to refine crude oil [if you even have a well to hand] to make it useable in vehicles. Many folk can already do the latter with solar panels on their roofs.

As a photographer... After literally DECADES of complaining about it with modern digital cameras. Now I TOTALLY get these guys are into video, so all their examples were video and motion related. But from a photography stand point it is a great innovation. The main problem for me is shooting high shutter speeds during bright sunlight with a flash setup. Usually you would have to resort to high speed sync setups and transmitters with that capability. But with this new global shutter setup now all that annoying stuff goes out the window. That means better power for the flash units since they don't have to strobe for the high shutter. And not only that.. You don't have to be locked down to brands anymore that can "play nice" with the camera to do that sort of high speed sync stuff. I don't usually get excited about camera stuff since it really has not changed much (to me personally) for a while. But this was super exciting to hear.

Not to grill the team on car stuff right after Marques got schooled on the GTR: The new Ramcharger is a "series hybrid", similar to the BMW i3 REX because the Gas engine is not mechanically coupled to the wheels. Similar to Hydrogen fuel cell cars, just the power comes from a gas engine instead. Despite what a lot of press at the time said, the Chevy volt (both gen 1 and 2, both of which i had) *could* mechanically send engine power to the wheels depending on what clutches were closed in the gearset. The Volt *could* operate in a series mode, where the Engine and one motor would act as a generator while the other drove the car. Love the car talk!

Does that audio sound a bit off today? Almost like a mix of too aggressive denoising / using a vocal doubler, especially on Marques voice. (Edit - If you EQ the audio in post, does it have a linear phase EQ mode? Otherwise you might be getting some strange phase cancelation issues especially in the low/mid - mid range.)

27:04 Nerd moment, here: "Rolling Shutter" is actually a TYPE of shutter, just like "global shutter" is. So, whereas the A9iii has a "global" shutter, something like the A1 (or pretty much everything else) has a "rolling" shutter. The term "rolling shutter", as it's used colloquially, has kind of become shorthand for the jello-ing or distorting EFFECT, even though the term actually refers to the kind of shutter it is. I'll show myself out, lol.
@andrewehyang
@andrewehyang 9 ай бұрын
I think the sound from the a9 iii is piped in from the speakers. It’s most likely done for skeuomorphic reasons and auditory cues of actuation. The Nikon z9 also doesn’t have a shutter and has the sounds piped in through the speakers. Internally Nikon once replaced the shutter sound with a cat meow.

The "all-electric drive-train with gas generator" design in question is a "series drivetrain", and has already appeared in the BMW i3 (range extender edition) and Mazda MX-30, among others. This approach eliminates the problematic complexity of traditional hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains, and allows for cheaper vehicles with smaller batteries that reflect how people actually use their cars 99% of the time, while also covering exceptions, emergencies and road trips.

Was looking for this comment. I immediately thought of the BMW i3 with range extender when they were talking about the RAM. It’s interesting that the i3 with range extender has been out for almost 10 years now. The other benefit with using smaller batteries is that they should hopefully be cheaper to replace if they fail.
@Daniel_Bagi

Regarding the Ram 1500 EV, BMW made a similar car (not a truck), the i3 REx, starting back in 2014. Similar concept, just for a different consumer. Runs on an electric drivetrain, but you can turn on the range extender to get 70-100 more miles of range. The REx is a BMW motorcycle engine which acts as the "generator" to put electricity into the battery, which then goes to the electric motors.

The gas engine can also be more efficient, as they can run it at the optimal RPM and charge over time rather than spiking the rpm every time you accelerate. I think it is a good truck solution, but for cars, personally, I’d prefer a low range ev only car. I don’t want to drag around an ICE boat anchor, or any expensive battery time bomb on my daily commute. I can charge at home and work, and even now I frequently rent for road trips.

on the RAM truck, Fisker Karma and BMW i3 used this setup. Those were initially done to make a car for EV incentives, but with a lower cost(less lithium = cheaper). I suspect RAM is doing this because car batteries are huge and expensive. They don't have as many resources as GM and Ford and were very late to start developing electric vehicles. Smaller battery for this RAM is way cheaper to produce and they still get to call it an EV

The new Sony A9 III doesn't have a physical shutter curtain anymore (Like Nikon's Z8 & Z9). The sound you are hearing is just for audible feedback. Hockey and Golf games are good examples for this camera because back then if you only use electronic shutter with the traditional sensor, the golf clubs or hockey sticks when shot during action, it will show like it's bent or bowing. Global shutter has drawbacks too. Dynamic range suffers usually.
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 9 ай бұрын
I'd love to try shooting hockey with this. Maybe they had this in another announcement video, but the shot I wanted to see was someone winding up for a big slapper. I feel like with sticks and clubs it is sometimes harder to notice the rolling shutter because they DO actually bend a lot. I noticed some weirdness with sticks from my Canon R6 before, and I believe that body performs relatively poorly in this area compared to others.

I owned a pick up truck for about 3 years. I never towed but I routinely had a bunch of stuff in the bed of the truck. What exactly does "towing" consist of? I never had to pull another vehicle or trailer but I often had heavy stuff in the bed of the truck. This kinda gives the impress that if you are not towing then you are not using the truck to its potential or something. Idk how to word it but I think you get it. The question should be how often do you use the bed of th truck. The answers and replies to that would answer the question as to why do many use them as daily drivers.

31:04 last comment, I swear: it's also almost certainly an artificial shutter sound. The Nikon Z8 and Z9 also only have e-shutters, and you can turn the sound on or off (depending on whether you want to shoot silent). The shutter noise is sometimes nice to have when you're shooting really fast just as an indicator that you've started shooting, how long you've been shooting, and when your shooting stops.

I’ve been a working professional for 30 years and this camera is truly rewriting the rules of what can be accomplished with a stills camera. I’ve been shooting Canon and Mamiya since 1993, so no fanboying here. Can’t wait to hear what he has to say.

I can't remember what it was called but I definitely remember about 10 years ago there was a site you could go to that would direct you to random KZfaq videos that had zero views. Not sure if it's still around but I remember one of my friends in college showing it to me lol

For the spotify thing, I think 15 hours is alright. On top of the public library, you have podcasts available, and music if you want. For podcasts in particular, I develop a GIANT backlog since I generally listen intently to a single audiobook. And being able to pay for an extra 10 hours really is the smartest part here, since if you absolutely have to finish it, just pay the however much to get a little more time!

It's called nominative determinism :) A friend of mine is a gardener and called Mr Gardener. Mr Welfare who works for Public Health or Alan Toogood, a samaritans volunteer. . .

About the hybrid truck, there's a Nissan car sold in the Asia pacific region that has exactly the same setup. It's an EV with a gas engine "generator".
