SHINee has such a distinctive sound fr. Its colourful, experimental, euphoric, makes you want to dance and has a nostalgic vibe. Even when they push their experimental boundaries (Everybody, Don’t Call Me, etc) it still feels like THEM, like only they can pull it off.

If you bring your mom on, listen to Marry You. Like, yeah. It took a few years, but I I finally turned my 85yo mom into a hardcore shawol XD It can be done! Oh, and if you want Old Skool, not retro, check out Romeo & Juliette from their debut album. They've only performed it live once, during SW5, either version is fabulous. SHINee's "Married to the Music" was released in 2015 and it's supposed to be fun and upbeat, because they are "Married to the Music." The MV has a very "Rocky Horror Picture Show" vibe, and it's just about as iconic of a cult classic as that movie as well. As others have probably mentioned, In the MV the girl in the wedding dress was collecting the best body parts from each of the members to create her ideal man. She burned Minho's head because what she wanted was his body. She used fire because Minho's nickname is "Flaming Charisma" because of his passion for life and sports and his need to always win. Minho has the best body of the group so, she took Minho's body, Key's head, Onew's nose, Taemin's eyes and Jonghyun's lips (for obvious reasons. LOL). Then at the end she spliced them all together and formed her perfect guy. If you notice, in the end credits you see a person that has been created from all of the members' body parts which is supposed to be the guy the girl created. In other words, music is a very fickle girl and she controls your life by picking and choosing the best parts and mashes them together to create the perfect song. LOL. We now know where Key gets his sassy personality from because we discover he is full of lemons. And when she takes Onew's noise we see Onew's blood is orange like nacho cheese because he is known for his cheesy jokes, as the "old man" of the group, etc. LOL. Their outfits and hair are supposed to look like they are dressed for a retro Halloween party. If you want to see the choreography better you should watch the performance version MV or a live comeback stage, and if you do, you might notice their bow ties look like bats and their hats have witches fingers, etc. It's supposed to have that fun, campy horror/comedy look and feel. "Married to the Music" is considered a Halloween must watch within the fandom and most of us make this MV part of our Halloween tradition every year. However, this song and MV came out in August, nowhere near Halloween. Halloween isn't really a big deal in Korea and it has only been in the last few years that Koreans have started to celebrate Halloween by holding costume parties. Halloween in Korea is pretty much a western culture transplant. But, the middle of summer is horror season in Korea. Koreans say they like to watch scary movies and shows in the summer because it gives them chills which cools them down when it is hot. So, that's probably why they came up with this concept for "Married to the Music" as an August comeback theme. SHINee really are one of the most iconic and influential groups. They are always setting trends, never following them. SHINee where designed to be SM Entertainment's experimental boy group, so everything they do is meant to be the first and they are expected to come up with a style and sound that has never been done before. And yet, like you said, it still always ends up feeling and sounding like SHINee. SHINee has started the trend with almost everything -- with every one of their songs to their dances to clothing trends, to live performances, to the way Kpop is promoted -- there is almost nothing that can't be attributed to something SHINee has been involved in. With every new song SHINee produces it's expected to be different than the last, so you will NEVER hear the same style or sound from them in any of their songs, even on the same album. The industry looks to SHINee to show them what the next song style and dance trend will be. And it is said that within 3 months of SHINee releasing their new song and choreography, you will see that same sound and style being duplicated across the industry with every comeback to follow from both boy groups and girl groups. When SHINee does something the industry takes note and follows suit. Case in point, SHINee is known as one of the very first groups to ever dress up in full costume for Halloween. They first did it for a fan meeting in 2013 and then they decided to show up to SM's annual company dinner in costume. Which is what gave Lee SooMan (the founder of SM) the idea to hold a costume party. Now SM is known for holding one of the largest costume parties every year. (The event is like the met gala of Halloween parties, and is usually attended by some of the biggest name celebrities in Korea.) As part of the party there is a costume contest and, in the past, the person with the best costume has won an all expenses paid vacation trip. (SM Entertainment members are known for being some of the most competitive. They are the ones who go all out when it comes to dressing up -- always trying to outdo each other. So it's a pretty steep competition among the top contenders every year. And each year they have to come up with something better than what anyone did the year before.) Key is very competitive when it comes to fashion, costumes included, and the last time he attended the Halloween party in 2018 he won. He came as Voldemort from Harry Potter. I would recommend (live performances): Picasso, Alive, Obsession, Prism, Odd Eye and Woof Woof! The energy are all different in these ranging from intense to fierce to full vocals, suave, sexy, and pure joy! It is a true experience

I always love your SHINee reactions! I still consider myself a new fan, since I only just discovered them a few months ago. I do hope you do a reaction video with your parent. I’m likely the same age as your parents, and I love SHINee and Taemin. BTW-you mentioned Kdramas. I got into them before I got into Kpop (about a year ago). And I know what you mean about superb quality (and relating that to SHINee. I almost watch Kdramas exclusively now. And BTW, I first saw Onew in Descendants of the Sun (on Viki), Minho in Hwarang The Poet Warrior Youth (also on Viki), and Taemin in his Japanese drama, Final Life (on Amazon Prime) before I discovered them in the Kpop world. If you haven’t seen those shows, I highly recommend them. Final Life wasn’t that great, but Taemin actually did really well in it, speaking English, Japanese and just a little Korean. Looking forward to more of your reactions (especially SHINee, Taemin, EXO, Baekhyun). Oh, you should see D.O.’s many Kdramas and films and Baekhyun in the Kdrama, Moon Lovers.

Talk about old skool, kinda has the same kind of beat and distant horns sounds like Earth Wind & Fire....in fact a lot of their old skool vibes sound like EW&F tracks hahaha. It made me go to Spotify and pull their music up for comparison and sure enuf I grooved to their tracks too lol. I guess that's how music works...I love Shinee so much and appreciate the SM music producers tapping into the rich archival history of R&B and glorious unforgettable beats of yore to keep this vibe to endure. I know I went off on a tangent, but the fact that Shinee in the 2000's can deliver music reminiscent of 30 yrs before them and still make it relevant today is an amazing thing. Would love to see you react to the band Poets of the Fall and their song Carnival of Rust (their most well known song and the music video got voted as the best Finnish music video ever back in 2006 when the song was released). Truly an underrated band from here in Finland. Also a band with many different sounds all the way from slow melodic songs to full on rock. Although if you want to immediately hear a song that showcases how crazy good the lead singer Marko Saaresto's voice can be (and while his vocal range might not be the most dynamic out there he is an amazing example of what you can achieve by having absolutely perfect control of your vocals especially the raw emotion that his voice is able to convey) then i recommend listening to their song Daze. His vocals on the chorus are something out of this world. I just think that so many more people would love their music if they just ever heard them but since their from Finland it rarely happens. Although many have heard their songs in Remedy's video games Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Quantum Brake and Control (Also every single reactor i have seen reacting to them has been pretty much blown away by their music so i'm very confident you'll like it) also... also... lot's of deep and meaningful lyrics and wordplay in their songs sorry for the long rant i just really want more people to know about them :D

I love that you were able to appreciate what's happening in the music as well as the wacko video. I love this MV! but so many people seeing it for the first time are so taken aback and intrigued by what's going on visually, they miss a lot of the glorious Shinee details of the music. (I'm pretty sure they catch on later, but still. I knew this was in good hands when you grooved to Jonghyun's gorgeous run at the beginning - I appreciate your ability to multi-task. :-)) Also, I'm retirement age and Shinee continually blows me away. (I have an ever-growing playlist of other groups since I discovered k-pop 6 months ago, but Shinee just hits on all cylinders all the time, with any and every kind of music.)

This song is the title track for Odd's, their 4th album, repackage. SHINee proved themselves and were given direct control over their comeback for the first time. They decided the concept, the title track, the styling, the MV, etc. When you said you see their influence today, I immediately think of this era. Anytime you see a male idol in a headband, you're seeing Key single handedly changing the entire styling game. You'll even see boys in the exact same haircut. The music itself introduced house music and uk garage to kpop. View, the title track, is their 3rd most played song on Spotify, used to be 2nd before DCM. They change it all up with chill vibes for Odd, so what do they do for the repackage? Funky, Queen infused retro-pop with a horror movie concept. They are the Halloween Kings after all. You can see they were testing the retro concept they'd fully flesh out in 1 of 1, the next album. So definitely make sure you have View on your SHINee list because it's a turning point in their career (really it's a turning point for all of kpop).

Although this song was released in August, 2015, it became the ultimate Halloween bop. It tells the story of a bride trying to create the perfect man by snatching her favorite body parts from each SHINee member: Key's head Taemin's eyes Onew's nose Jjong's lips Minho's small face At the end, you see the bride trying to piece those features together. I recommend for your mom Chocolate. Jonghyun cowrote that song. It's his admiration anthem for women of a darker complexion. I hope that does not sound as bad as I think. Jonghyun was inspired to write by observing the various color of women while taking a trip to America.
