I took the Emirates Stadium Tour and will tell you all about the history of Arsenal Football Club in this video.
From their formation in south London, to their move north, to Herbert Champan & Arsene Wenger I'll take you through everything you need to know about The Gunners!
Currently managed by Mikel Arteta, Arsenal have struggled in the Premier League in recent years but did pick up an FA Cup in 2020. Can they challenge for Premier League titles again and reach the promised land of the Champions League?

A tiny bit of research would have found that arsenal couldn’t develop any further on Highbury, hence the move from a 38,000 seater stadium to 60,000

Arsenal were not allowed to redevelop Highbury, due to it being listed. Also all the house around Highbury - actually owned by Arsenal and rented back at peppercorn rents - are listed, and so could not be knocked down to make ground larger. Arsene Wenger had part in designing Emirates, also Wembley and even Spuds asked his advice when building the N17 Bottling Factory.
@c0mbat15
@c0mbat15 2 жыл бұрын
I thought it was pretty well known so I was surprised about the commentary in this video. Specifically, it was the East and West stands that were listed. It's why they redeveloped the North Bank stand in the early 90s so get a few more fans in. Prior to the Taylor Report, following the Anfield disaster, I believe Highbury had the highest capacity ground in England. It's a shame that it was unable to be redeveloped and shows the short sightedness of the planning laws in England because surely 99.9% of people would prefer to see Highbury as a football stadium rather than a block of apartments.

The people who designed and built the stadium is the same group that did benfica and spurs . Hence why they all look the same with the same design language. Being built years apart means each stadium is basically a modern upgrade from the other . Benfica > arsenal > spurs

@@c0mbat15 Im not a arsenal fan but i think highbury was probably 100x better then the emirates. Sure the emirates is big and looks nice but the atmosphere in highbury was so much better compared to the emirates and arsenal were also way more succesful in highbury and if they had not moved to the emirates they probably could have won a champions league and a few more prems
@c0mbat15
@c0mbat15 2 жыл бұрын
@@akrish2351 I think the romantic in all of us would love to think that. I loved Highbury and agree that the atmosphere has never been the same at the Emirates. But any Arsenal fan (which I am) would be kidding themselves to think that remaining there would have kept the good times rolling. The fact is that Roman Abramovic's take over of Chelsea in 2003 changed the premier league for ever. Arsenal were already in decline by 2006 (the year we moved to the Emirates) due to the fact that unearthing bargain buy players was much more difficult when we won the premier league for the last time in 2003. The sad fact is (because I dearly miss Highbury) that if we hadn't of built the Emirates (for only £350m vs the £1b for the new Spurs stadium) we would have likely been worse than we are today. Sadly the only thing that would have made us better than today would have been more free spending owners. Most other club owners spend far more thsn ours do (the exception being this year).
@akrish2351
@akrish2351 2 жыл бұрын
@@c0mbat15 yea I think you needed new owners after roman took over Chelsea and kronke right now as far as I know has been spending quite a bit like 150 million in one transfer window is kinda crazy I think the reason he wasn't spending much before was probably because he was pushing for a super league and arsenal were making a ton of money but due to decline in the pitch revenue has probably gone down and now finally he is probably gonna invest more and if he continues to back arteta in January transfer window and others then arsenal might get champions league football in a few years
@mattjames2699
@mattjames2699 2 жыл бұрын
There was no chance of developing Highbury unfortunately. The east and west stands were listed buildings and still stand, although theyve been converted to residential use. The North bank and clock end were already about as big as they could be due to surrounding roads and buildings.

You need to consider the difference in years when both stadium were built. Arsenal moved into the Emirates in 2006, hence the 390 Million Pounds price tag while Tottenham moved in by 2019, hence the 1 Billion Pounds price tag. That's a 13 year gap. Prices would have gone up, therefore, If the Emirates had been built during the 2016-2019 period, it would have cost more.

Really enjoying these videos. Great presenting and nice balanced view of each stadium and the tours. I visited the Emirates not long after it opened and was blown away by how good it was. Still think it is better than Wembley in terms of matchday experience, comfort and view. I understand the nostalgia for the old stadiums but most of the new ones are a huge leap in safety and comfort and some like the Emirates are a cut above the bog standard lego kit builds.

@@crow1989 if we didn't move, we wouldn't have the funds we have today. Couldn't spend £72m on Pepe, £50m on Ben White. Those extra seats brought alot of revenue and sponsorship to the club. Chelsea would be the same without Romans funds.

This is true but with a big caveat. At the point the decision to move was made match day income made up around 20-30% of Arsenals revenue. Since the move and the huge boost in TV money it now plays a smaller %. This is what teams like Spuds benefitted from where they could rebuild the squad and other infrastructure which we could not. The time will come for the other clubs to rebuild but they will be able to support it in others which we could not.

The gap in interest the Arsenal owner (Stan Kroenke) shows Arsenal is typified in the level of investment KSE has put in The Emirates (zero) and then compare that to the $5BN+ he has personally invested in the world's most expensive stadium in Los Angeles (SoFi Stadium and its state of the art 360 degree scoreboard) for his beloved LA Rams! The club bought up a number of houses at the South Bank end of rhe ground, but realised they could only increase the capacity by a few thousand. I loved the old ground, but the club had to move to meet demand. At least they didn't go through with trying to share the new Wembley stadium.

I was fortunate enough to see Arsenal play at Highbury during the stadium's final season; The view from my seat wasn't great, which was true for many seats in the stadium due to the steep sloping of the roof and upper tier. Aesthetically and in terms of amenities (or lack thereof), it felt like any other old school stadium in the country. There's so much history wrapped up in Highbury but the club was in dire need of something bigger and more modern and redeveloping the existing stadium simply wasn't an option. The Emirates is a world class stadium and, now that it's approaching 20 years old, I appreciate that it feels more lived-in and "Arsenalised" than it did before. During the barren years between Arsenal moving to the Emirates and the 2014 FA Cup final ending the trophy drought, the Emirates definitely felt a bit soulless, like it could have belonged to any club (Benfica maybe?). The Emirates is also Arsene Wenger's legacy. The impetus to build it wouldn't have existed without his taking Arsenal to new heights on the pitch and all the work he did off it. It's been overshadowed a bit now by the new Wembley and the Spurs toilet bowl and is probably in need of some renovations but it's still undoubtedly one of the best stadiums in the country.

You need to go on a Legend Tour around the stadium. Instead of worrying about the cost, view it as an experience. You also get to access more areas. I'm guessing you didn't make it to where they show off the gold Premiership trophy otherwise I'm sure that would've mad the cut?!?
