Whilst I agree that those types of muzzles are dangerous and shouldn't be used, it would have been more responsible to mention a more appropriate basket muzzle and encourage people to use them instead. I know this was probably too short to show fitting and training with it, but it should have been mentioned as people should never be discouraged for being muzzling a bite risk dog.
@Aimee0206
@Aimee0206 Жыл бұрын
Agreed - plus, those muzzles aren't fully bite proof. If the dog can open it's mouth even slightly in a muzzle like this (one with a large hole in the front), it can still bite.

I honest congratulate them for being responsible owners for doing this. Most owners don't muzzle there dog at all if there a bite risk and instead use prong or shock collars But i agree a basket muzzle will be better

Happy to see some owners really trying to stop their dog from attacking other dogs/cats by trying to use a muzzle even if it’s the wrong one. It’s great that they were aware and trying to do what they can. One Staffy charged into my front garden through the driveway and attacked my cat which was asleep on our front door step. She had a huge chunk of her stomach missing and our neighbors witness it happen. The owner didn’t say anything and ran off with the dog. If it hadn’t of been for us at home and rushing her to the vet, she would’ve died. She only had a 5% chance of survival apparently, even the vet was surprised she pulled through. She was always too frightened to go outside after that.

At least they recognised an issue and got her a muzzle, though it was the wrong type and they may not have muzzle trained her. So many people are reluctant to muzzle their dog because it "looks bad". I would rather they look bad than injure someone. My staffy is muzzle trained and he always wears it when meeting new animals even though he's never shown more than a bit of rough play.

yeah, I actually feel much safer when I see a muzzled dog, honestly, than to be close to a reactive-looking one without a muzzle. I see it as a responsible action taken by the owner for all of our safety. especially since a bite-risk dog is one accident away from being put down.

My dog was extremely aggressive towards cats when we first got him (hes a rescue and i think he was eating ones he caught) after working with him for the last couple of years and with consistent, safe, exposure and praise/reward he can now get along with cats. He still gets to a point of irritation after a few hours of being around them so he is supervised while with them. His true test came when the neighbor's cat attacked him and he ran back to the car and hid instead of retaliating aggressively. That actually makes me very proud of him for making such progress and keeping with it even when i am not there.

I think the squeaker as an attention getter is best for her humans. Redirects the prey drive, but also a sound that is less of a trigger because up until now her humans voice alone is triggering, having been rehearsed so many times! I have a few clients that the verbal cues work for me, but not for them, it is as if their voice causes a default response. So while they work on adjusting their tone, we swapped to a clicker or squeaker or some other sound that was reinforcing or able to redirect effectively. This is such a hard behaviour to modify in Terriers! It is so primal and so self reinforcing, finding something more reinforcing if they leave it alone is so helpful! I wonder if she may benefit from a head harness for 4 to 6 weeks to modify the habit and break the stare/fixation. Can pose to be a very useful tool for this behaviour.

I use to dog sit my brother's 80lb beautiful American pit bull terrier. I had two cats and she was known for treeing cats. She used to like to glower at the cats so you had to tell her not to, but she was really respectful of my love of cats when I took her walking and good on a leash. Even off leash, at least when she was with me, she would stick her tail in the air and purposeful stride past cats with an air of snobbery and they would freak and arch their backs as if they knew what she was really thinking. The poor pitty is lonely. She maybe needs her own kitten, or play dates with an appropriate play mate. Start out with basket muzzles and together walks on a leash and just work them up to friendship.

They should get rid of the dog before a serious incident will happen. It is to much for them to handle and they'll never get her under controll. They seems surprised over the dogs behavor but if they did some research about the breeds she is before they got her, they would'e never bought her. This is what happens when you ignore what the dogs is bred for.

I walk my neighbours pitbull- an absolute SWEETHEART with People- from one end of the block to the other then back to his home each day I'm able to, and he just recently stopped pulling as much on his leash except when another dog is out. or he sees a bird. He whines, yelps, barks and pulls/drags me to get to them, and one time I LITERALLY sat on him like you would a mini-pony, legs on either side of him cause I couldn't hold him back by just the leash (he and my other neighbour's little dog absolutely got beef with eachother for NO reason!?) he does have 1 problem I haven't figured a solution to yet- he zigzags when he walks he CAN NOT for the life of him walk a straight line by my side lol. I have managed to get him to learn 5 tricks tho- Sit (also in sign-language, smart dog), Stay, Heel (Kind of, still working on that one), Shake/Paw, and Lie Down. I also taught him a command for when I cross the street with him, I say "Cross" and he crosses with me instead of me dragging him :D
