Static Shock was an amazing animated series back in the early 2000's. When growing up, I would always get excited to watch Static Shock and as I got older started to look more into the history of the comics from Milestone (plus we're joined by Comic Drake).

Static actually saved my Saturdays. When we were kids, our mother would make the whole family clean the house on Saturday mornings. This drove my sister and me crazy because we wanted to watch cartoons. But if she caught us watching Static Shock, she'd let us be! We're Black, and superhero shows focusing on Black people weren't exactly common.

The great thing about the way it was done was not making the racist the supervillain of the episode. There was a real threat in Ebon and his group in the background, but there was also the issue of Ritchie's dad being racist as the actual main issue. Not only that, but they showed that Ritchie's dad could be redeemed.

@@robertastevenson Modern shows care more about the message than the story. The beauty of static shock was the fact that the discussion of race and racism was ultimately a tool for the story itself to progress. Unfortunately most modern stories are written to serve a purpose to hold up the racial themes, which doesn't work, and that's why "white by default" stories tend to be more popular despite, technically speaking, being a bit racist, or at the very least very racially biased.

I liked that Richie's super-intelligence was causing him problems at first as suddenly his mind is racing at 100 miles an hour and telling him how to do impossible things and he has no idea why his tech-savvy nature is suddenly escalating so badly - he almost has a full on mental breakdown trying to come to terms with it until he realises why he's suddenly able to create perfect AIs and stuff.

Correct me on this one 'cause I really want to know. The kid's home life wasn't stable and add the bullying on top of that didn't help. As Virgil and Ritchie got to know him, he showed he was a very passionate and creative kid under his anti socialness. That episode showed how being open to people can slowly help bring out the best of them but also shows you don't know what personal problems people are going through in their lives that can one day just push them over the edge.

I remember watching this as a kid and my dad being surprised that this was a show that I chose on my own. I didn't really understand why the time. But as a super girly white girl, with no interest in superheroes, I guess I see why now. It just goes to show how good the show truly was. You didn't have to look like Static to empathize with him. Or even be interested in superheroes. The animation was beautiful and Static is hilarious. That being said, I can now recognize how big of a deal it was to have someone like him in animation. I grew up in that weird time frame late 90s early 2000s where there was a surprising amount of black representation. That era kinda ended after Thats so Raven was canceled. I'm glad I was lucky enough to be a kid when this was out.

I agree that late 90s early 2000s was a great time for black characters, and now we’ve kind of regressed, Or the quality of black characters just isn’t what it used to be. Almost every show I watched growing up in the early 2000s had people of color in it. Fillmore, That’s So Raven, Suite Life, Lilo and Stitch the Series, Kim Possible, American Dragon: Jake Long Cyberchase, Zoom, Maya and Miguel, Arthur Avatar the Last Airbender, Teen Titans (there was also the Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Family Matters, but I didn’t watch those in my childhood. Besides, we've already done this for Black Panther, Blade, Hancock, and Ultimate Spider Man - and those guys were tons more beloved than Ironheart's previous iteration, or Starfire's daughter Mindy Are you seriously telling me that we can just forget the plethora of enjoyable but underutilized black characters and replace them with white characters spray painted black?

Actually, a lot of Blerds, Black nerds, read Milestone Comics before and during the Static Shock cartoon. It is much like we read Boondocks comics strips growing up before McGruder landed a show on Adult Swim. One of the most poignant moments for me in the comics is when Vergil stops thugs from attacking Rick for being gay. The cartoon definitely had its emotional beats, like Richie's racist dad, the school shooting, etc. But the show only scratched the surface of what Dwayne McDuffie was doing at that time with Static, Icon, Rocket, and other Milestone staples. DC hiring McDuffie was one of the smartest things they ever did. And McDuffie's untimely passing was one of the most tragic things to happen at a moment when Black and creatives of color were finally breaking through the mainstream.

I think it was the first time the concept of "race" ever appeared on my mental radar, and I vividly remember the episode and scene that brought that to my attention: (spoilers) it was the one where Virgil took a trip to Africa and he commented to Ritchie something to the effect of "Here, I'm not a black kid; I'm just a kid! Is this what it's like for you?" I never realized that was how some people felt, and I never forgot it. It's sad because Virgil's situation is a lot more unique then the mainstream heroes due to his race as well as the entire concept of the Big Bang during the middle of gang warfare, which made the perfect opportunity to create a rogue's gallery organically within a single city for us to have as a setting.

I loved the DCAU lineup on Kids' WB. I may not have been able to relate to the racial issues brought up in Static Shock, but that didn't take away from its appeal. But his approach to using his powers was what was really interesting. Any character with magnetic powers or electric powers should have been able to do what Static did, but you have either Magneto who uses his powers to throw metal around, or you have other electrical heroes/villains who just use the zappy zap powers, but Static has the knowledge that they're linked and he can use electricity to generate a magnetic field and fly around on his signature manhole cover. I remember looking it up a year or two ago and never found it, but it's apparently available on HBO Max. Also remember The Zeta Project, again tied into the larger DCAU and crossed over with at least Batman Beyond, but can't find it anywhere other than buying individual episodes and I currently have no interest in buying them.

Gonna miss your Regular Show-esque character icon BUT I do also think your new one is a step in the right direction! Your channel's growing a lot and I think this new character reflects that. Anyway, I've always loved static Shock especially the cartoon. I can't wait to see the movie and hope it doesn't disappoint

Static Shock while not my favorite out of the DCAU did do something that none of the other ones did and I still remember being surprised as a little kid at seeing it. When Virgil was starting to get involved with gangs and someone handed him a gun. Not one that looked like a toy or some kind of laser weapon but a hand gun that looks like the real thing. At that point while I was aware that the other shows and many shows like them showed guns they always looked like a toy and were usually in the hands of people that we thought of as bad people. It just seemed very alien in the cartoon world that it was set in and the characters involved didn't treat it like a joke and Virgil was clearly not comfortable with being handed it. While I was raised around guns coming from a family that hunts and have shot them before even then while watching it was made very clear that Virgil was in over his head.

The episode where Virgil goes back in time to the moment where his mom is destined to die was such a heartbreaking episode. His mom as a regular person working as an EMT putting her life on the line during a dangerous riot is a beautiful moment and seeing where he got his values which translated to his heroics.

Ugh static shock was my favorite! I was definitely too young for it during airing (I was 6 in 2004), but even through out of order reruns it left an impression on me. I should definitely rewatch it to understand the actual plot because if you held a gun to me and asked me to describe the storyline I would just die.

Oh man watching Static Shock Saturday mornings back in the early 2000s. Really made my weekends! Even meeting the voice actor Phil Lamaar in person back in 2015 was truly amazing. Even Phil said he enjoyed doing the voice of Static Shock/Virgil and said it was well scripted. But yes watching Static Shock on Kids WB was worth it ^^. Awesome video Jordan Fringe :D and your guest Comic Drake ^^.

So, I've got to ask this... Did the Virgil/Static Shock origin story getting changed from a gang war accident to police oppressing a "Mostly Peaceful Protest" (Riot) stick? That was really the only thing that erked me with the reboots from what I remember. Growing up, I had to deal with gang violence's in my area. While I'm not back, I related to Virgil as a school kid in Static Shock from the DCAU much more than any of the other super heroes because it felt like there was so much more lived experience than any others. Spider Man was a close second, but Virgil was the only one who was a single child BEFORE his super hero accident and didn't become a Super Hero BECAUSE of a parent's death.

in Brazil this animated series was even more influential. We have more than half the population of brown people, the majority facing poverty, living daily under the shadow of gang violence and trying to make a better life through education. Every passage in the show seemed very close of me and Virgil became my favorite superhero. I'm sad that it took so long to get him back in the spotlight, but better late than never
