What Makes Lego Batman The Most Faithful Batman

When The Lego Movie first hit theaters, no one expected the breakout star to be Batman, voiced by Will Arnett. Lego Batman was so popular, a spin off movie was green lit almost immediately. Not only did we get a fantastic spin off, but we got one of the most faithful adaptations of Batman ever put to screen.

I don't love Spider-Man 2018, it's okay imo, the combat is a carbon copy of Arkham but worse, the story is weak, QTE all over, but sure swinging around is really fun(even if it has way too much handholding) and it has cool graphics. I don't get how it pays homage to several Spider-Man stories, like Arkham Asylum did for Batman, if you think borrowing then butchering stories is paying homage then idk what to tell you, plus the really uninspiring enemies/villain and how similar it felt to the Arkham games, if I didn't know Insomniac I'd thought the game was made by Rocksteady ex-pats.

Not only do I consider this one of my favorite versions of Batman, but I think this is the best Robin movie. Too many DC stuff portrays him as either a whiny aggressive brat or some overly angsty edgelord (like 2 TV shows I will NOT mention), but this version of Dick Grayson is actually likable for once. He may have been naive, but his heart was in the right place. He would have done anything to make Batman proud of him, helped him come out of his loner shell, and help create the Bat-Family. He's like what Robin was meant to represent back in the 1940s, and I loved him for it.

JESUS CHRIST, YES. It is like Richard "Dick" Grayson is Jason Todd, who i like very much, but Dick is literally the golden boy of DC. There has been multiversal confirmation that any universe without Dick is 200% darker. The family depends 45% on him, 45% on Alfred, 10% extra that they share between them, and the last 10% is divide with Bruce and the other kids not trying to kill each other. Dick is a amazing human being, at a level that leaves even Superman behind, but the live action versions treat him like some fucking edgelord.

I definitely LOVED the idea of a Batman who has tragically closed himself off from everyone around him. Most other Batman media doesn't even mention that Bruce's _parents were shot right in front of him_ more than once or twice, and it's always been a backdrop to the overall story. This is the only Batman story I've seen where Bruce is actively trying to fill the void left by growing up without his parents, and intentionally pushes away those closest to him because he's afraid of losing them too. Lego Batman, more than any other Batman, is a man who lost his parents at a young age and still hasn't fully come to terms with that. He basks in the adoration of his city full of fans because it's the most intimate relationship he'll let himself have. Sure, other Batmans have avoided getting close with those around them, but those Batmans were more _dark, brooding, and edgy,_ while Lego Batman is genuinely tragic.

Something genius this film did in contrast to other Batman films is explore to its fullest _why_ Batman is a dark and brooding loner. It’s always been established that he is, but this film makes the direct connection that because he lost his parents, he’s scared of ever caring for anyone again in case they die too. It creates this incredible character motivation in this movie that isn’t really used elsewhere. Sure, he’s a loner who hates working with people, but the Lego Batman Movie says exactly _why._

@@Qaosbringer The best parody comes from a deep love of whatever is being parodied. Yes, he's a parody but in this parody they make the single most complete conceptualization of the character. TAS is phenomenal and carrying basically that batman into justice league animated is so good. However, it only really touches on an aspect of a character that's almost a century old. It doesn't acknowledge how goofy the silly man in a bat costume can be, it doesn't take him to the depths of edge that he's descended into, it is more fantastical than the Nolan films but more grounded than the Adam west series. Kevin Conroy is and always will be the voice of batman in my mind because of those shows. TAS is an absolute timeless classic with many episodes that blow the Lego batman movie utterly out of the water in terms of quality. Lego batman came to be only because the creators clearly loved this character in his entirety and endeavored to take every aspect of that character into their adaptation. And, frankly, this is one of the few realms this works: a ridiculous world where a multitudinous batman fits right in. Lego batman is less a character in his own right and more a brutal condemnation of a few limited takes on the character (batman always wins, batman always works alone, batman is so dark and edgy, batman can't ever grow as a character) but he's also an incredible love letter at the same time. A take on this character that encapsulates more than any other take I've seen and embraces everything about him that multiple generations of people have come to love. So I'll absolutely agree that TAS is a much better work of art but Lego batman is the most faithful adaptation.

The first Lego movie was a very pleasant surprise and I had doubts, that any sequel, even if just loosely based, could touch it (Corporate greed and so on), but the Lego Batman movie was a treat from start to finish. It showed me, that people and even big movie studios can still make good movies in the 21st century!

I've been a DC fan for all of a month, consuming content in every waking moment I have. I just watched Lego Batman for the first time three days ago, and LOVED IT. Knowing that most of the movie franchises won't entirely live up to what I've experienced thus far with Lego Batman, Young Justice, and the Nightwing (2016) comics is definitely a disappointment. This movie just felt so full of love.

This movie is hilarious and amazing. On a side note though, it's actually crazy how Lego and Warner Brothers made one of the most loyal Batman films ever yet in the same year, made a Ninjago movie that barely has any semblance to the show it came from.

My one gripe was that it just HAD to include all other WB properties possible, it could have EASILY stood on its own as just Batman-Lego references galore and would have been plenty fun all the same. The introduction of other characters cheapens the experience

But I still think it's funny that they do that. I mean where else can you get a movie where Joker teams up with Voldemort, Godzilla, Sauron, Wicked Witch of the West, King Kong and others in beating Batman. As just a simple throwaway joke, it absolutely works

I have watched and immersed myself in nearly every piece of Batman media since I was a baby. I avoided this movie until 2 years ago since I thought it was gonna be goofy and not really a Batman movie. When I finally watched it on a random summer day I fell in love with Batman all over again. The heart that made up the Batfamily’s interactions was there, his history was respected and utilized incredibly well and the villains were an essential part to the story. This has made its way as one of my favorite Batman movies and is up there with The Dark Knight and The Batman for me.

This movie is right up there with Mask of the Phantasm as my favorite of the animated Batman movies. I remember when I first heard The Killing Joke was getting it’s own animated adaptation, I was so excited! Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill in an R-rated Batman movie?!!! What more could you ask for? I was really let down though. I know they were trying to establish Barbara Gordon’s backstory to give new-time viewers her background and daily life. Fleshing out a character and adding more weight to the stakes that Gordon is feeling by the time we get to the actual Killing Joke portion of the story. They went about it all wrong though. But if you skip the first 30-ish minutes, it’s pretty faithful to the graphic novel.

Thank you for this essay. I couldn’t agree more. My favorite moment in the movie comes toward the end, when Bruce takes off the cowl in the moments before he is to go to the Phantom Zone, and he still holding it when he hugs Robin, but it’s only when he sets it down that he can truly embrace him. It gets me every time. And then it goes right back to being incredibly funny. It just might be a perfect movie.

It's cool to hear that so many Batman fans loved this movie too, since I'm not all that familiar with the Batman franchise. A lot of modern superhero movies require audiences to be, not just familiar with, but MEGAfans of the previous movies in order to understand what's going on, and with how many movies there are at this point it's overwhelming to try and get into it now. Anyway, I LOVED this movie, and it's amazing that it's able to pay homage to the Batman franchise without alienating new viewers
