Talk about jumping into the deep end! The first time I heard this song, I had the same thought about the vocals at first, but you warm up to their sound pretty quickly. If you want something a bit more melodic and soft, "Born in Winter" is an excellent one. And of course if you want them to melt your face, "Flying Whales" is the way to go. You really can't go wrong with these guys, but do note that their really old material is straight-up old school death metal, even if you can hear elements of what they'd evolve into years later!

I like Joe's vocals generally, but not at the beginning of this song. It's not the tone, but more the...cadence? Delivery? Not sure of the correct word, but those first two stanzas just sounds like (to me) that he's just rattling off a list of items the vocals do does not really fit with the music. As soon as "Neglected emotions lead to..." kicks in, I'm good to go for the rest of the song.

The lyrics to this album literally have the ability to make me cry and it makes no sense given how heavy they are. The title track, just... whewww. "The Way of All Flesh" deserves a lyric video as well.

I'd suggest l'enfant sauvage. More often than not ppl recommend a song by them that throws you into the deep end. I don't think this is what you'd really call their deep end but it's definitely one of their weirder songs in terms of structure. Ease in and youll dig it. They have some of the best rhythm of any metal out there. And the vocalist is very good its just different than your standard metal vocals.

I love this song so much and I definitely agree with your opinion on the vocals. I really didn’t like how off kilter and oddly timed they were in the first and second verses. But as I re-listen much later after my first few times and having heard much more of their discography, it’s become one of my favorite details as I’ve come to learn how purposefully the layout of literally everything in this song is (as well as their others but this one especially). And its focus on rhythm over melody through most of the track, letting the melodic elements and writing slowly creep in as the track progresses, it’s so cool to hear as a producer. Literally my only gripe is how many videos choose to have the shortened version without the beautiful extended transition into the next track on the album. In my opinion that final section is what makes the extreme repetition of the outro riff fully worth it

As a massive Gojira fan I could write an essay and suggest about 40 amazing and totally different songs by them that you would possibly enjoy, but id just stick to first 2 songs that always come to my mind initially when someone wants to dive into Gojira more: The Gift of Guilt (and with this one I strongly suggest watching live version at Brixton Academy, its just perfect) and L'Enfant Sauvage (either studio or live, this song is 10/10 either way for me). And as already few people mentioned, theyre just stupidly good live. Ive been to couple of metal shows and festivals, but I have to admit that Gojira at Mystic Festival holds the 2nd place of the best concerts Ive ever attented to. That show gives way to 1st place only to, guess what, another Gojira show that took place earlier this year in Gliwice (btw Alien Weaponry that you reacted to recently played as support there, they were amazing too). I had to check Gojira out live after all the comments Ive read about how good they are live and well, now their shows have 1st and 2nd places sealed for me lmao

Great song to start with! I think Joe's vocals have evolved with the band and he even throws in some clean vocals here and there. Early days the vocals were more Death Metal growls. I think I would have suggested a song Like Silvera, or Born for one thing, but maybe I like to ease people into certain bands more. This song is one that I would skip back to on my phone when I was at work, kept me going! 🤘🤘

I get it, took me a moment to click with them. They were huge when I was spamming Nightwish, Dream Theater, Helloween, Ayreon and Devin Townsend, at that point they didn't do anything for me. Then I heard L'enfant Sauvage...that song is a ferocious howl that absolutely nailed me to the spot. Since then I've reappraised and become a big fan of Joe's vocals. One of the other keys to their stuff is to find a live version, they build their songs around the drums, Mario is one of those drummers who just gets music and the live setting adds so much more to the song. Even straightforward tracks like Silvera or Pray are astonishing live. In fact "Pray extended edition live at Red Rocks" is almost a religious experience, hypnotic and brutal, I can watch it over and over and get something new every time. That performance alone needs more eyes on it as it's hard to describe how good it is. They do a lot of activism, and if you dive into their stuff you may realise whales are a particular favourite of theirs. So much so that on Devin Townsend's "By a Thread" performance of the album "Deconstruction" Joe does vocals on Sumeria and represented him on screen with a sad whale in one of those helicopter hats. Tiny bit of pointless trivia, yeah I know, but I needed to add it or my brain would be bugging me all day.

I'd suggest anything from "From Mars.. to Sirius" for example Backbone - that song is the core and essence of Gojira. One of their biggest influence is Metallica, but they've managed to create something totally their own. I saw them the first time in 2007 - I was blown away. Now, you've already heard Orbit Culture, and can hear that their influence actually combines Gojira and Metallica... :) edit. This track is prolly the most drum heavy track they have, and a quite monotone in that. Not that representative of them.

The intro pattern is absolutely wild on drums, imo one of the hardest drum parts to play ever. The concentration, independence of limbs and skill required to play it tightly and consinstently is just incredible. Groups of 5s and 3s switching each bar between 555333 and 55533 underneath constant 4/4 on ride/crash makes it into basically an incredibly long crazy 45/4 bar, its wild. Mario is a genius, for me and lots of other people currently the best drummer in the world

Thank you so much for doing my recommendation. I loved it and seeing your stank face made my day! 🤘❤️ As others have said here, not their easiest song to begin with but not really the deep end either. This one is definately rhythmically and structurally more challenging than some of their other songs and I would never recommend this as a first Gojira dive for a non-metalhead, but knowing a bit about your background I knew you could handle it! Even if it sounds bonkers at times there is always a method to their madness. Joe's vocals are really unique. He does clean singing and traditional growls, but most of his harsh vocals are melodic growls or pitched screaming. I love it but also know that not everyone does. The drums in this one are berserk! Mario is a beast on the drums and considered one of the best drummers in metal. He even took jazz drumming lessons to become a better metal drummer, which I find amazing! As for recommendations, you have gotten some good ones already. Personally I would suggest you check out some live stuff. The Gift of Guilt, live at Brixton Academy, for a melodic and brutally beautiful song. Or Global Warming, live at the Silver Cord Studio, for a more mellow, melodic song that has Joe doing some clean singing. 🤘❤️

2 things... 1st, metal is an acquired taste, and the harder it is, the truer this statement. I argue it's particularly the case for drums in some bands and vocals in others, such as Gojira. 2nd, I would never recommend to anyone - not even a metalhead - trying a Gojira/Opeth song while being focused on it. Do it while you walk, drive, ride, golf, bowl, play, whatever, but they're just too atmospheric and many of them, too long to focus on that alone! The way I fell in love with quite a few Gojira songs was doing just what I described with a playlist of their songs in the background. And as I was doing that, some of them caught my attention, and that's the ones I still listen to to this day, years later.

As a major major Gojira fan. I completely agree with the vocals. The first verse shouldn’t have been as i sounds off to me. It’s a classic Gojira track, but for me it’s one i rarely come back to, althouh the intro and outro are fantastic on this one. There are so many ‘better’ tracks to get into them, but the live versions is where they won le over. Prime Gojira early 2000’s until 2014 ish, live there’s nothing quite like them. I’d suggest Explosia live at Brixton or Clone live at Garorock for some absolute destruction, that said, there are so so many live versions to recommend, and i tend to like them better than the studio versions. Check out the Clone at Garorock for some prime Gojira imo. Cheers
