I have ran this kit as a full on crawler up against TRX4 etc with great results. The shocks (well system) are actually brilliant. Upgrades 1. Wheels & Tyres 2. Driveshafts 3. Motor for slow control. Also a great rig for 4ws conversion.

I've built dozens of tamiya rc's and this one was the one I made the most mistakes on by a long way! The best advice I can give on this rc is read the build manual before you build it then read it again and after you've done that.....read it again!

So right Gavin, it's not a typical Tamiya build. But somehow it's a very refreshing build. Taking time and checking the manual many times is mandatory. And screws... so many screws. But I loved the build of my Unimog and I would like to do it again. Maybe on a high-lift or semi. Nope, it's not your fault. Many builders had issues with the middle gear. You need a lot of attetion for this part and even then it's not guaranteed that it fits.

Suspension of and 4 axial shocks i did on mine. Now it gets the laro d90 body .

I can see where this build has a lot of parts that could easily cause some mistakes when you're under time pressure. I think it's a great service for other builders when you show us your mistakes. Keep up the good work.

Back when I was building the broco version, I myself made a ton of mistakes. But when it was all completed along with painting the body in black, I regrettably sold the darn thing! It never set foot on dirt.

I l9ved everything about my CR01 except the steering and Driveshafts. Very cool and unique crawler. Loved the over-complicated suspension and that crazy tough transmission.

A very nice one Gavin👍 I made almost the same mistakes. The cheapest MOD I have done is to zip tie the suspension reaction arms to eliminate the play. Also did other shocks, driveshafts ,drivecups,bearings, weighting the wheel,difflock,HW crawler brushlessmotor and four-wheel steering.

Looks a funky suspension set up for sure, looking forward to seeing how the body turns out 👍

Ugh, I've been there on the mistakes score. Sometimes it just takes time to revisit the manul and get things right.....several times over..cough! ahem!

You could hold those captive nuts in place with a small blob of rubber cement. That was recommended on the CC02 Unimog build.

I made some same mistakes and some diferent. Have fun with the servo. Hope that you have the right servos my one's didn't fit with the servo bumper.

Bronco is #1 in my books too ! I've got the FJ & Socker but had to order a real Bronco for Christmas . Built this week waiting on a train ride to California . Merry Christmas !

The one mistake I made in building the CR01 Bronco, was that regrettably I sold it without even running it once. 😭

Upgrade the shocks for sure. Also, the hardened steel axles with diff-locker and hardened steel drive cups are a good choice. If you do that, then add steel drive shafts as well.

Those little blind nuts in building the frame can be frustrating. I got annoyed with them building my CC02! So many fiddly little bits to get together all at once! It looks good and I agree, the Bronco is the coolest looking of them!

It's definitely one of those builds we're I had to read the instructions a few times over and I still made quite a few of the same mistakes as you, those captive nuts nearly got a small dab from the hot glue gun 😒 as you know they like to fall out.. All in all such a cool different build from Tamiya and one I glad I bought

Having not seen one of these run it will be interesting to see if you need to change the motor to a bigger turn crawler one.

Really wanted Tamiya to put a defender body on this chassis at the time but it’s on the cc02 now so I’m good ;) besides that it’s a cool chassis. As for the mistakes everyone has builds like that at some point. Good to see you show what went wrong :)

It is a more complex kit but I made no mistakes while building mine. I've got a ebay jeep hardbody on mine complete with interior. I needed to put internal springs in rear shocks due to the weight. Lost a small amount of articulation.

Cracking video gavin now I have a dilemma I was going to pull the trigger and buy the clodbuster but now I've seen this I'm tempted with this rocksocker kit instead oooh decisions decisions 😀

Might work to put stiffer oil, smaller hole pistons in the shocks, to alleviate the wobble more, I guess. I got one I still haven't assembled, so no real experience with CR-01. But sure is a pretty thing, even tho it's not really capable as a crawler compared to the modern stuff.

For me the transmission problems were caused by not pressing BD7 and BD16 onto the sun gear. I had to seat them with a hammer and socket. Did you have any issues with the diff-locking pin? In my kit, when it was installed it forced the mesh of the crown and pinion gears. I gave up on the pin and inserted a spare bevel gear in each diff.

I messaged you with the fix for the slop in the suspension.

The motor plate is directional. It has a recess around the hole on one side. Also, watch out for the 5mm E clips versus the 6 mm E clips. I know this now.

Hi Gavin. Great video as usual. I made similar mistakes that I had to sort. I am still suffering with lack of suspension travel before the linkage hits the chassis. Any advice what to look at.

its a jiggly rig for sure, but those shocks wont help, its the spring setup, its just designed that way, its a surprisingly good setup, very not-scale which is kinda tamiya

If you go to 9.20 you will see black shading on the right hand side of BD11. This is all the clue you get.

So excited come on Gavin you know that Tamiya makes the best instructions that's a rookie mistake starting off guys started off on a bad note that's what happened with my blackhead motor I wasn't paying attention and I put the pinion on the high tooth pinion and then I put it back and all my years were making noises and I was like what the heck it's cuz I didn't pay attention that's what I'm getting to random captive nuts put grease and hold them you know what I noticed about the car with the most mistakes you actually whenever you get it put together the correct way you have the most fun with their car cuz you were like you remember all the problems you had and then you see how it's supposed to go together and then it all makes sense that's beautiful beautiful mistakes

That's a really good looking truck, especially, with that body on it. I don't know too much about this model. What's it designed to do? It looks more like a crawler than a monster truck, but whatever, it looks great. 😎👍🏻

Tamiya makes a lot of metal upgrades for this kit. They make metal dampers and even the black side pieces in metal. Maybe they do not make those parts anymore. Thoughts?

Weighted wheels & Tires - Lock both axels

I’ve collected all variations of this chassis and even a GMade conversation chassis, this and the jeep body being my favourite of the bunch. A lot of the hop ups are best put in while building it up, but your right with the shocks. These should be first on your list to change along with the tyres and look at 4ws. There are loads more you can do with them to improve performance but start with shocks and tyres.

Rock Socker Shocker, easier said than built!

We all have days like this so don't let it get you down. First upgrade should be some better tyres, the included ones are awful! too hard and not good for anything really.

I do not want to sound rude to anyone but I do not see how anyone apart from a first time builder can go wrong on a Tamiya build, the manuals are the best around full stop.
