All they literally had to do was warn him that fidgeting with a knife in public could easily be perceived the wrong way - posing a public safety risk, and if he did it a second time, then fine him. Instead, they arrested him, confiscated an item he bought legally, and then tried to throw him in jail for at least 6 months - i know the article said four, but the fact the man recieved four months might have been the result of his lawyer, which just goes to show how much of a prison the UK is becoming. this reminds me of something that happened to me a few years back, this is going to be a pretty long story but might as well share considering the similar context when i was in high school i had a legend of zelda hylian shield necklace with a master sword letter opener that came out and just for wearing it to school once in tenth grade cause a friend wanted to see it, some random teachers pet girl who was widely despised tattled on me and i got taken out of the class in handcuffs by a school resource officer to his office where one of the assistant principals who was a hag of a woman was waiting and they said they were going to expel me, asked to show her that its practically harmless and while they were digging through my backpack cause obviously having a legend of zelda necklace clearly means i was going to start opening fire on people with the bow of light i must have stowed away somewhere, i took that opportunity to take it out and said 'watch this' before running it across my thumb in a sawing motion and then poking the tip into my skin, neither of which drew blood cause it is a freaking letter opener, and said if theyre going to try and charge me with 'bringing a weapon to school' then they better be charging everyone who ever brought a pen or pencil into the school as well cause it is no more dangerous than one of those was literally forced to be institutionalized in a mental ward with a bunch of kids who were suicidal and had murdered their parents and whatnot for a week before they would allow me return to school, and when to no ones surprise except i guess the fossils in charge of that school it was decided there was absolutely no reason i should have been sent there, only then did they stop trying to ruin my life for no reason and just pretended like nothing happened afterwards, and then as a nice cherry on top i was only back for like two days before having to take another week and a half off school due to developing really severe pneumonia that nearly killed me and had me coughing up phlegm for like four years afterwards, almost certainly from that hellhole of a hospital i was imprisoned in, even better is that i was in an international baccalaureate magnet program too so it took like two whole months to catch up with everyone else after all that for context this occurred in central east coast united states back in 2018 about a week after that one particular valentines day incident that was national news at the time and probably why the people running my school were being such paranoid lunatics, probably going to be the single most terrible and moronic thing that ive ever been forced to endure for the rest of my life, or at the very least i hope so but im also clearly very unlucky and have been all my life so dunno, anyways yeah thanks for reading

Additionally, he WAS caught and told not to bring it around, and was arrested and charged when he went out with the same knife a second time. There's an article by Forbes which tells the full story that I can't link here since I'm pretty sure links in KZfaq comments are a no-no. What spatnz didn't tell you ist that the guy had already been previously arrested on numerous charges, including burglary. If you already had a few rodeo's with the law, your punishment for consecutive offenses will increase, even if it normally would've been pretty small A normal person would've probably just gotten a slap on the wrist.
