Hi everyone! My name is Oscar and this is my very first video here on my KZfaq channel. I'm super exited to share what I've been working on for a few months now, and that is growing the Orange Hat Micro Dwarf Tomato. This tiny tomato plant is SO productive! I really like this variety, take a look!
This is a tomato time lapse video that I recorded and put together for y'all to enjoy. If you don't know how to grow your own tomatoes at home from seed and/or have been thinking about starting your own garden, then this is a quick intro video great for that. You also get to see this specific variety before you decide you even want to try it yourself!
I'm filming these videos as a sort of record-keeping for me and everyone, and I'll be expanding upon my type of content later on as I get used to the platform...plus I get to eat!

Yeah no problem! I must give the Florida Petite a try then, they sound worth the effort. I had trouble deciding when to pick these, so I left them on a while, though maybe I could have left them longer? Haha. Technically, as soon as they change color, they’re should be good to go. Outside especially, if you don’t want the critters getting to them or having them split on you.

Any idea of the total yield you got and how long the plant was productive? Terry

@terrancemccann7657 Thank you :) I believe I posted the weight at the end of this video if not in the article linked in the description with more details. This plant lived a really long time and really only started struggling when I placed it outside after this run. I’m in 9b-10a for the time being so it gets really hot and the bugs don’t let up. I got the two harvests seen in the video and about 2-3 more after that, though the outside took it out as it struggled for its last. Would have definitely lived longer had I kept it inside but these grow so quickly anyways 🤷🏼‍♂️ Good luck on your growing!

Oh micro dwarves are awesome! I have a few others I have yet to try, but it's too hot outside at the moment and can only grow them indoors right now. I'll probably share my setup in detail sometime in the future so look out for that; if you go on my Instagram though, you might be able to see a few pictures for yourself. I will say, though, that my video setup is more than what you really need to get these to grow; if you have a window that gets a few hours of light a day, it will work for you indoors as long as you pollinate the flowers yourself by shaking them or vibrating them with a toothbrush.

@fateworksfarms
@fateworksfarms 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I might start some as well if the temps allow. This one is still growing in my backyard and is producing fruit for the 4th time, just as an experiment. It took a short seasonal break, but I've been keeping it pruned and it's still going. I'm in a hot zone, so it might not make it for much longer if I just leave it to the elements, but I'll see. Even though it's still going, starting from seed is always easy and much faster in my opinion; younger tomato plants just have that vigor and readily grow, flower, and fruit. I also suggest saving seeds once you've grown them in your climate!

@fateworksfarms
@fateworksfarms Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. In my experience, micro dwarf tomato varieties can get by with a bit less light than others. The grow tent that I use for my time lapse videos came with, according to the reviews, a 100 watt LED (link in the description), but the wattage isn't as important as the lumens. I did a tour of my setup in this video ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rpiGmLCblt-ugmQ.html ). These lights put out about 1000+ lumens depending on how close, which is good enough to grow what you like, especially in a 2x2 tent in which you can always lower and raise the light if needed.

We live on a boat. That looks like a tiny producer. Think it would survive?
@fateworksfarms
@fateworksfarms Ай бұрын
Depending on the conditions, I don’t see why not. Outside it might be tricky depending if your boat is stationary or not, how hot and humid it is, and the amount of sun/shade and fresh water it can be given. It’s definitely fun to give it a try anyhow, and if you have a grow light indoors then definitely for sure! Micro dwarf tomato varieties are more forgiving, take up little space, and can even be grown on a window, so they’re perfect for testing your gardening skills in general and are also great in hydroponic towers, vertical planters, and hanging pots. Would love to see a boat garden tho =O

A follow up on my first time experience growing under lights in a grow tent. My plant set one fruit and is developing normally but I'm disappointed in my results compared to yours. I'm wondering if my issue might be temperature related. The grow tent maintains a consistent 77 degrees F in an ambient temp of about 65 degrees with the only source of heat being the grow light. What were your temperature conditions and did you have any other heat producers other than the lights? Thanks, Terry.
@fateworksfarms
@fateworksfarms 10 ай бұрын
Hi Terry. The temp in my tent stays around 75-80 F which is just fine for tomatoes, especially since it’s not under harsh direct sunlight and dry conditions. There are no other heat sources aside from maybe the room it’s in at certain times of the day, but nothing that affects it further than that. A few things come to mind for your scenario. #1 are the lights being used, their color temperature and output; I use a Mars Hydro full spectrum LED light and I go over those and what you might need to keep in mind in one of my tour videos. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rpiGmLCblt-ugmQ.htmlsi=-pL0eq9C50iqYiq3 #2 Soil & Fertilizer; you want well-draining potting soil for container growing and you will want to make sure that you’re not feeding your plant too much Nitrogen and not enough Potassium. Too much Nitrogen will give you a beautiful plant with not a lot of fruit. #3 Pollination. Even though tomato blooms are self-pollinating, there is no wind and there are no insects inside of a grow tent, so you might want to hand pollinate with either an electric toothbrush, blowing air, or by shaking on the open flowers gently. I hope this helps :)
@terrancemccann7657
@terrancemccann7657 10 ай бұрын
@@fateworksfarmsThanks for responding. The light I'm using is a Spider Farm SF-600 whose characteristics are similar to those of the Mars Hydro you use. I fertilize initially with Fox Farm Tiger Bloom 2-8-4 followed by Morbloom 0-10-10. The plants are in 1 gallon grow bags and the medium is 1/3 peat, 1/3 Black Kow compost and 1/3 vermiculite. I would be hearing what medium you use if you don't mind sharing. Thanks, Terry.
@fateworksfarms
@fateworksfarms 10 ай бұрын
@terrancemccann7657 1 Gallon is probably enough for this variety; I am using 5 Gallons in this video, for reference. The soil I used is Kellogg's Organic Potting Mix (Pink Bag) from Home Depot and I amended that with Dr. Earth Tomato Veg & Herb (4-6-3 Instant & Slow Release Fertilizer), then weekly feedings of AgroThrive Fruit & Flower fertilizer (3-3-5), which is like a fish emulsion (Some Links In Description). I'm keeping my fertilizer around the 5-5-5 range all the way through for a slow steady feeding. Sometimes soil and organic material from the store comes practically devoid of life, so giving it a liquid fertilizer with microbes is important if growing organic, which I think your products already do. Some people also prep their mix in advance and feed it something live to get it going a week or two before using it to grow, though I didn't do that ahead of time for this video, just during.

Hi there. For these videos I tend to water using a manually pressurized spray bottle; it’s the same one you see at the beginning of the time lapse videos. I got mine from Home Depot, but I’m sure you can find these at most garden centers and they do have different kinds and sizes. Sometimes they’re used for fertilizing or for getting rid of pests so you might be able to find them in such sections at the store or online. The one I use is good for one to a few containers and it’s super handy, but if you have a whole garden, it might not be the right tool as it can take a while with pumping, spraying, and refilling.

In tomato varieties that are indeterminate, we tend to remove most suckers because they can grow wild and take energy away from the plant if left unchecked. This variety, however, is a micro dwarf and determinate, so it’s better to let them grow.
@umwha

@@fateworksfarms So if its just another branch, would that branch grow more leaves and more flowers and fruit. Why would it ever 'take energy away'.
@fateworksfarms
@fateworksfarms 8 ай бұрын
@@umwha Yes it keeps growing more leaves, more flowers, more fruit, and more suckers non-stop if it’s an indeterminate variety, so it has to distribute energy among all of that to get ripe fruit and some seed. To get healthier and larger fruit, it’s better to keep the plant tidy with less suckers. It depends on how it’s grown too, such as if the plant was limited by a container instead of directly in the ground.
