It’s quite the bold statement - but to a certain extent it did.

It is a great poem, you did not mention that Tolkien gifted the poem and the copyright to his friend and one-time secretary, Margaret Joy Hill, who was also Rayner Unwin's secretary at Tolkien's publisher, George Allen & Unwin. The poem was originally published as a poster by GA&U and Houghton Mifflin in the US. It was also read by John Le Mesurier for the BBC Radio Series The Lord of the Rings.

It has also been set to music by Donald Swann, whom Joy Hill gave it to shortly after Tolkien's death. It was included in the second edition of the song cycle "The Road Goes Ever On" (the other songs were written and published while Tolkien was still alive, and were approved by him; "Namárie" was based on his own chant that you can also find on KZfaq). I was thrilled when I found that book in a second-hand bookshop in the 1980s when I was a teenager. It's a great book not only for the music, but also for the notes and translations by Tolkien, including beautiful calligraphy.

I believe there is a recording of this poem being sung in an elvish cadence floating around out there as well, sung by stephen oliver i believe. I came across it once, and it almost brought me to tears listening to both the words and the music as well, highly recommended while reading this poem!

Lovely! And Donald Swann had composed a piece of music to accompany it as well 👍

I always loved the poem itself, the lord of the rings is my favorite book of all time and I almost cried when I finished it. People don't often (if ever) talk about this book so I'm glad you did! Thanks for your content!

I love your content, I bought the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Illustrated set and Im currently listening and following along with the Andy Serkis The Fellowship of the Ring Audiobook. Thinking about it you can make a video on which audiobook versions are the best! Its my first time reading Tolkiens work and I already bought all the books I need!

There's a new edition of the Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien which is revised and expanded, what do you think of it?

Hey there recently found your channel I'm 16 and i really want to buy a good hobbit+lotr book set for reading (and collection but reading is the main purpose) but I'm not sure which one I should get I prefer a hardcover and illustration would be nice too what set would you recommend?
@brewingbooks
@brewingbooks 8 ай бұрын
Exciting times! It's always a wonderful moment when you're embarking on your first-time reads. I'd suggest you go for a nice, cheap paperback set for both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. They're much more convenient to read and have the same content as any other fancy hardback of deluxe edition. After reading them, you can then consider looking beyond to other editions :) Enjoy!

I’m sure there are translations, but the English in the original is quite straightforward in the poem so it should be an easy enough task 🙂
