There is a town in Singapore that is literally disappearing. I went down before it's gone. The estate is called Tanglin Halt - it's a mature estate near central Singapore full of local, nostalgic sights and great food. For a foreigner like me, it's really interesting to see a neighborhood like Tanglin Halt. It has a local, retro vibe foreigners don't really get to see. Join Riduwan and I, as we wander around this beautiful neighborhood.

Love the old school vibe of that neighbourhood. Definitely not on the tourist guides but personally, I feel like this is the real side of Singapore. Shame that the area is getting redeveloped/demolished. And my goodness, that shot with all the post-it’s...taken beautifully to really capture the emotions behind every words. Great job editing Riduwan!

Hi Ghib, Paul from Tanglin Halt here (yes, like your editor, been here since i was borned). I think I might want to highlight that you might have missed out quite a few good food left here. In particular, the dessert, nasi lemak, western, stuffs like that. If you are visiting again, do drop me a message. I'll be glad to give you more details to explore again. また来てくださいね、めっちゃ美味しいホーカーフード待ってるよ! Icon is one of the neighbourhood cat. You should also walk around the neighbourhood. There are more cats here than one of the cat island you had back in Japan :)

I attended the secondary school beside Commonwealth MRT station 30 years ago. Frequented the shops and food centre there. Even walked the railway tracks at the back when it was operational back then. Fond memories of that place and the food there and love the nostalgia that it brings me whenever I go there. It is a pity that that place will be rendered to the history books in a few years time.

Thank u Ghib for sharing dis video.I used to stay at blk 62 for 40 yrs.Lots of fond memories. Played hide n seek at blk 61,57 and half of the car park during my teens.Blk 61 & 57 were only 3 stories high, hence, there were not many places to hide.So my friends & I didn't hide at 1 spot,we would run discreetly to the spots where the seeker had gone.We would climb a tree, hide under cars, inside lorry & longkang, behind bushes & other ridiculous places. There was once when I had no other place to run & hide as the seeker was nearby.I had to hide on a motorbike dat was covered in canvas. The 5mins I was hiding on the motorbike,I was afraid dat I might get caught. Not by the seeker but the motorbike owner.I was scared the owner would pull the canvas & saw me sitting on the seat of the bike with my stomach flat on the tank & holding on to the handle bar.🫣NOPE!!!Neither of them caught me dat day.🤣 We ever caught eels at the big longkang too.A lots of passer by were shocked when we climbed up the longkang with 2 eels which were abt 50cm-1m long.We marinated it with salt & fried it at my friend's house. Had lots of other adventures with my friends while we were staying there. Those were the days of our lives as Tanglin Halt kids during 1990s.

I like the fresh perspective of the neighbourhood. A lot of youtubers would focus more on thd aesthetic-looking buildings or shops while yours focused on the 'normal' shops and places we would naturally walk past without much thought. Really appreciate the reminder that what we assume as the normal/usual can be interesting once our lens/perspective changes. Thank you to Riduwan also for the video!

11:30 Such snack/biscuits are usually sold by 100 grams. You should be able to find shops which weigh and sell by weight in older estates. They are stored in big tin containers. By the way, if you like exploring old Singapore estates, I recommend you check out Telok Blangah Rise. Its a very quiet neighbourhood not far from Vivocity. Go there in the morning, you be able to get some good food at the hawker centre as well. Fried carrot cake, roti prata, char kway teow.

Some cuts were a little blurry but probably because there wasn't enough footages to work with lol! Always film anything or more of the same thing in different angles won't hurt. The dolly shots are great, more of those will do wonders for editors. Keep it up!

Open green fields between Blocks 63,64,65,66 used to be a popular soccer field played between different neighbourhood teams, whenever game started all floors were filled by spectators in the community. There was an occasion when the ball smashed the glass panes of a resident home situated behind goal post. Owner came out with a long parang knife and stabbed the football into halves. Game over.

I lived on this side of Tanglin Halt in my early childhood, and then moved to the 16 storeys side (maybe Ghib should explore that as well), where I lived for around 25 years. I then moved out of Queenstown, but after many years away, moved back into the area. The area shown is, in fact, part of one of my exercise routes. I'd be very sad to see this place go.

Ghib since youre local now, Tanglin is pronounced as Tongue-Lean. Tip - in local names the "a" is nearly always pronounced the same as in "far" and not it is done in "fare". The error can be simply demonstrated when pronouncing surnames like Chan and Chen. If you follow American pronunciation, both names are indistinguishable.

Why do u Singaporeans always mispronounce words spelled with a A as if it’s spelled with a U? @@nathanchang7713 dude this is how we pronounce our names here, don't tell us that we are pronouncing our names wrongly. I assume you are referring to there american pronunciation. Well, let me say to you that the fact you call singaporeans ("u singaporeans", already setting us apart as distinct from you) as "mispronouncing", you already assume that we are doing it wrong and the way you mentioned is right. Hence aren't you imbibing the attitude you are condemning? Also, for cultural context, the reason why tan and chang are pronounced in what you mentioned as the "right" way is because it is filtered into american english, not because it is right. The reason we pronounce it the way we do, is because these names originally came from different dialects or languages, the pronunciation came first, and the anglicization came later. Assume that you are not from here, why not gain an understanding of the local context before saying what we are doing is wrong.

@@cometmummy I’m Chinese Canadian I know mandarin, but u can’t say or use the argument because it’s pronounced like that in mandarin, it’s justifiable for the word and spelling CHANG to be the same as CHUNG, which in mandarin isn’t even Chung and also if u want to pronounce Chang as Chung and Tan as Tun why don’t u just spell it like that and not spell Chang and renounce it as ‘Chung’ and PRC Chinese pronounced words when they speak in English properly, you don’t even say ‘that’s the mandarin way’ also Tan is ‘Chen’ Han Yu Ping Yin way in Mandarin, so why are u guys mispronouncing Tan as ‘Tun’ there’s no ‘Tun’ in mandarin
