The Boston Bruins made a big trade right before game 7, trading goalie Linus Ullmark, and we almost forgot about it in the after glow of seeing the Panthers raise the cup! That and more in today's NHL hockey video!

Yep. This is why he’s being traded. Not cause they want to trade him for korpisallo, but because it’s fucked up to make two starter quality goalies play backup for no good reason. What’s ignored is that Ullmark had a no trade clause and was shooting down agreed upon deals ahead of a contract year. A minor aspect of Ullmark coming to Ottawa which I really like as a Sens fan is that his new backup here, Anton Forsberg, is an old friend and teammate from Sweden. Now if the team can get some more solid defense in front of him then Ullmark might just be comfy enough to re-sign. If not, I wouldn't blame him for looking at this trade as a rental. I really do think this is one that will look better for all parties in hindsight. I think Korpy at that cap hit, as a back-up, on a more defensively responsible team will be solid. The first is always good and Kastelic was born to be a Bruin. Like with Buffalo, Ullmark will show he's good even on a bad team, netting Ullmark more money on his next contract than he woulda gotten as Swayman's 1b. And Ottawa gets good goaltending for the first time in forever and the chance to offer him the 8 year contract other teams can't offer or get some assets back at the deadline if they don't perform in front of Ullmark. I like this trade for the Bruins. Having Swayman/Ullmark was a huge luxury for sure but Swayman/Korpisalo is still kinda insane. Getting a decent replacement for Ullmark while also getting a first round pick and a prospect out of it is a win. Whether it's originally Boston's own pick or not makes no difference, a pick is a pick.
@OttawaRocks2 күн бұрын
Here's my understanding of the trade details: - Ullmark is scheduled to make $5m this year with a $1m bonus given to him on July 1st so the Sens effectively pay him $6m - The Sens retain $1m per season of Korpi's contract. Thus, what's left on Korpi's contract is 4 x $1m = $4m that the Sens have to pay. - All in all, if Ullmark walks, then the Sens payout $10m instead of $16m to Korpi (over the length of Korpi's contract) thus saving $6m. Plus the Sens give up a 25th overall pick. According to Steve Dangle that 25th pick is more like a glorified 2nd rounder rather than an elite 1st round pick (based on how the prospects tier out). Of course, the Bruins also get Kastelic, a solid 25 year old 4th liner. My verdict: As a Sens fan, I'm happy with what Steve Staios achieved. It almost seems like we paid Boston the draft pick to save $6m (presuming the worst case scenario where Ullmark walks). Boston also did a solid for Ottawa by freeing the Sens of the obligation to keep Korpi on the roster. With Korpi on the roster Ottawa would have been forced to utilize him during these prima and valuable years of having Brady, Stutzle, Batherson,, Sanderson (and so forth). And with Korpi on the roster the Sens will have had very little chance of making the playoffs. What about Boston? I think Boston also did alright. Had they kept Ullmark for the year, they would have had no trade returns possible (given Ullmark's expiring contract). Also, having two #1 starters in net makes no sense from a cap management point of view. So why not ditch one of the starters and just get a cheaper backup instead? In the end, that's what Boston did and I believe Korpi will play better in front of Boston's superior team D (compared to Ottawa's). What else? Could Boston have gotten more in the Ullmark trade? Previously, yes but not currently. With most goalie starved teams out of the goalie market (e.g., NJ grabbed Markstrom from Calgary and the Kings grabbed Kuemper from the Caps) this meant Ottawa suddenly found themselves in a buyer's market and likely dictated the terms.
@nathanbrisebois8756Күн бұрын
Vancouver is apparently in the market for a goaltender. Watch them flip Korpisalo to Vancouver for Dakota Joshua. It would require a sign and trade, but allegedly DeSmith wants to resign, and with Silovs playing so well in the playoffs, apparently the grapes are sour in regards to Demko. Boston needs a bit of scoring help, and Dakota Joshua wants out of Vancouver. Not sure about dollars and cents, but off the top of my head I think that could work for both teams, then Vancouver trades Demko, or doesn't resign DeSmith

Calling it now, Swayman is not going to perform as well without the support of Ullmark. It will change his mindset and flow. its not just about the hugs lol

I mean if we are being honest, we all knew Boston was not keeping both of them and Boston already tried to trade him at the deadline

When Korpi has defenders around him he's not bad. Swayman is a stud and Korpi is a good number two

Wallman trade was way worse. Gave up not only their second best defence men, but by far the red wings best cap steal for nothing. And paid them a draft pick to do it. You could’ve done that with holl or chariot but they chose wallman. What the hell is Yzerman thinking?

I thought this was going to be about the Red WIngs trading Walman and a 2nd for nothing.

It’s crazy how people have forgotten how good Korpisalo was when he had a defense in front of him. 7 playoff overtimes? Hello?? Ottowa can’t defend. Boston can. Korpisalo is gonna rebound because that’s what Boston does

I was hoping for more for Ullmark...but the Bruins are not known for being geniuses at the trade (sure, there are some goodies...but there have been LOTS of baddies!)

Gotta disagree completely here - Boston still has an elite goaltender in Swayman, who's 5 years younger. Keeping 2 Vezina-level goalies on the roster would be any GMs dream, but it gets hard to afford in a salary-capped league. One of them had to go, and IMO Boston made the right decision on who to keep. Chances are Ullmark would be trying his hand on the UFA market after next year anyways, in which case Boston would be getting nothing. Ottawa is taking a big risk on that one themselves. To get a first round pick, a solid back-up goalie option and a potential fourth-line forward for only one guaranteed season out of Ullmark is a pretty great deal for Boston. That the pick was originally Boston's has no weight in the quality of this trade. The original trade to lose the pick was bad, but the pick was gone. Before the trade they didn't have a first round pick, after the trade they do, that's all that counts.

The trade wasn't bad at all when you look that Ullmark had a NTC so he controlled that and he only has 1 year left on his deal. No team is going to give up a lot for a 1 year player. The reason why NJ got a better deal for Markstrom despite him being older and not as good as Ullmark is because Markstrom has 2 years left on his deal. Term means everything when trying to acquire a player. So you call it a horrible trade but you don't take everything into consideration, sure you mentioned it but you still said it was a horrible trade. What if they didn't trade him at all and let him go for nothing? That would be horrible. And it's not like he has lit it up in the playoffs anyway so big deal they traded away a good regular season goalie.

The vezina tender is going to costs 8 million per. Nobody can afford that. You aren’t seeing the big picture…
