From ALL the videos l had watched on youtube you are the first to explain how the right hand, wrist, forearm, and shoulder contribute to the swing in which it could screw it up or leverage for power/speed in the golf swing. Sometimes l SMOKE that ball and l remember that beautiful feeling of how the club face buttered the ball but l don't know how the hell l did it but now l know. THANK YOU! l left the game about 15 years ago but now start hitting balls and getting my swing back to form before l go play because l don't want a long day at the golf course only at the office lol. Thank you for the tips!

Some of Ben Hogans 5 Lessons still apply today. Would you agree with the statement “AT ADDRESS, THE LEFT ELBOW SHOULD POINT DIRECTLY AT THE LEFT HIPBONE AND THE RIGHT ELBOW SHOULD POINT DIRECTLY AT THE RIGHT HIPBONE.” With a slight bend in the right elbow?

I just discovered this swing thought the other day and it’s really changed everything. I could not make consistent contact with the ball until I realized this with the trail arms

I think being a lefty and swinging right-handed I never noticed my elbow position at address hindering proper elbow flex. This makes so much since now, never had proper rotation of the trail arm since I don't throw right-handed. If you are a lefty swinging right-handed this should help tremendously. Thank you, Chris!!

Most don’t consider the role the mass of the arms play in the golf swing. In the ball toss example it is the mass of the trail arm which accelerates the mass of the ball. Same in the golf swing with the addition of the mass of the lead arm which if pinned across the chest in the takeaway and downswing explodes down off the chest as shoulder turn back parallel like the lever arm of a catapult. But the lead arm + club is a dual-lever system more similar to the Trebuchet which whips its projectile around the primary lever. The trail arm in the golf swing functions as a triple-lever system: upper arm + lower arm + club shaft and just as a dual-lever system can create more acceleration of the mass on the end of the levers so does a triple-lever trail arm vs. dual-lever lead arm. So what is actually happening in the downswing - if the golfer allows it to happen - is the lead arm flying down off the chest as shoulders reach parallel and the mass of that arm swinging towards target pulls the mass of the trail arm straight and drags the mass of the club head, now whipping down around hands, into the ball.

Great lesson, thanks. How about a lesson on the LEAD ARM ELBOW from start to finish? Most teachers never talk about the lead arm elbow. Is it because the trail arm is the dominant arm, therefore the lead arm/ elbow matters very little ?
@ravora1
@ravora1 Жыл бұрын
Can you comment on the importance of the correct grip in executing this? Getting the right setup with forearm pointing forward and then correct folding of right elbow seems to be critically dependent on right hand position / grip on club.

Great video thanks Chris. Please do one on the lead elbow. I've heard that the back (depends what you mean by front and back but by back, I mean the pointy bit!) of the lead elbow should point to the target - I'm not sure about this.

In focusing on correct trail arm position at setup, I'm struggling to not keep weakening right hand grip unless my right shoulder drops lower. This creates a lot of angles despite good ball striking. Is this as ok as the outcome feels or am I developing bad habits

A really great video Chris. I just wondered if there might be a better thought to achieve the right elbow action? I’m thinking that when we throw a stone, we would not ever think about the right elbow! Just wondering!! I do love what you have posted here 👍👍

If the right elbow whites to the right hip and address, where does the left elbow point? If you have a reverse K position add a dress with the hands toward the forward knee, doesn’t that help put the trail elbow in a more proper position?

When I throw hard in a skimming motion, my right palm actually turns down and the elbow moves directly away from the target. Then at the top of the throwing motion, the right hand quickly flips up and back (almost like holding a tray of drinks) and the elbow drops, then I fling the hand forward. I don't think it's quite the same motion as the back swing you're demonstrating. You're demonstrating more of the motion of swinging a tennis racket.

I understand the theory of why getting the elbow into a throwing position helps the swing but I have limited flexibility to do that. What exercises do you suggest to help gain flexibility, or suggest other alternatives to compensate?
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf Жыл бұрын
Hey Nicola, yeah that will be the case for a few out there I think, limited flexibility. It’s the trail shoulder that needs to range off motion so anything that helps with that should be good for the swing. I have a 30 day course on my website which is designed to free up the body and increase range of motion, that could help

Yes. As a left handed, we always focus on the left leaving the right elbow every where around causing heavy shots. We'll need to correct our right and keep practising it.
