I wasn't in any doubt that the tripod would turn out great and it did, but what caught my attention was the freehand lettering on the floor. If I had tried that without a stencil it would have wound up looking like a ransom note written by a kidnapper with caramel on his fingers.

Instead of relying on the tension of the bolts, if you add a short arm to the rear with a heavy weight, it will be more like a camera crane The weight needs to be heavieer than the camera to keep the balance arm short. I've built a couple of cranes.

a spring washer could be a way to get the tightening force right. (There are some in the shape of a flat cone. They could work better than "spiral" or "propeller" shaped ones)

There are desk lamps with similar articulation mechanism where that same problem is solved with a tension coil spring. It is probably possible to find a attaching points for the ends of that kind of suitable spring where the spring tension equals the load of a camera.
@OU81TWO

@@TK8866275 The tension springs (2 of them) are typically connected diagonally between the 2 vertical brackets of the parallel arm. My instant thought from the title of the video was that it would be a marvelous wooden tripod such as would be used by Ansel Adams. Boy was I surprised!!! Nice. It would be nice if there was a counterweight system for the arm that could be adjusted to the weight of the camera equipment so that you could place it at any angle without clamping.
@DavidLindes

hey Laura, just an idea. you might want to extend the arm beyond the center pole and add a counter weight. Change the self locking nuts to something with a handle. This way you get the same you have now but you can also use it as a Jib. This would enable you to make shots that look like a vertikal slider. This could be usefull for final showcase shots of things you have build.

I have a few improvements to your neat studio stand. I would add a spring on the adjustable wishbone arm like on a Luxo lamp (diagonal from the top of the post side bolt to the bottom of the camera side bolt. This makes it a lot easier to operate and prevents slippage. I would also add a counterweight down the center tube with a pulley on top. This makes vertical movement of heavy parts much simpler.

Looks like the right tool for the job! One idea for the camera arm: Install a long spring diagonally between the bars so that it attempts to pull the arm up, thus counterbalancing the camera somewhat. This structure is used e.g. in steadycam arms.

might consider a spring driven balance for the vertical adjustment on the column vs the tightening arm - there's some pretty good weight out there, if you're going to adjust often. Same on springs with the parallel arm. they make studio stand 'tripods' akin to what you've developed. Cool design. Glad my old account Lincoln Electric sponsored your video :) I experienced lake effect snow in Cleveland while parked at their corporate offices for a 4 hr meeting in 1985 - poor little Honda Accord was buried in those 4 hrs :)
