Do not and I mean do not put into neutral when still breaking. The car will not be under your control when still in motion and if you need to accelerate suddenly you're one step behind. You would fail if you try do this in a driving test in the EU. You break, then compress the clutch as breaking (you might feel the car shudder a bit before clutching) then with each foot on both clutch and break, and stopped you can shift to neutral. Only ever put in neutral when the car is fully stopped. But if in traffic just shift to 1st gear and keep the clutch compressed until you need to move off. Edit: modern cars also do not require you to shift down throught the gears when breaking unless you are in 5th gear and above. In which case reduce speed shift ro 3rd or 4th gear and break than clutch down until stopped. Shift to 1st or neutral when stopped.

As far as I'm aware you can "block change" your gears from whatever to whatever as long as you are at the right speed. You would just put the clutch in as you are braking and then put it in whatever gear makes sense for your new speed. Going from 50mph to a red light, you wouldn't change gear until you know what gear you want. So slow down as you approach and clutch in, then once you're close to the light decide whether to go into (most likely) 1st or second depending on your speed and whether the traffic is starting to move.

Owned a car with a 5-speed manual for 18 years. I never sat at a light in Neutral. I kept my foot in the clutch at the light and shifted into 1st gear after I stopped. In 18 years, I was on my second clutch.

If it's really a short light, it makes sence. Otherwise, holding it for a a long time hurts the clutch itself. Put it in N and pull the handbrake while waiting.

@@babblebabble , rather than holding the clutch in for a long time (for a long train, or a traffic accident, as examples), how about I shut the engine off, release the clutch, and leave it in first gear. Edit. My 4 wheel disc brake system uses the parking brake to adjust the rear calipers. So, I regularly set the parking brake whenever I went anywhere. I never set the parking brake at home. I don't trust a parking brake set overnight, especially during frigid Michigan winters.

When coming to a stop it's always better to downshift rather than going straight to neutral. That way if you have to you can accelerate away.

That's fair too I just think that downshifting is safer and when done at low rpm doesn't necessarily cause a noticeable increase in wear and tear. It just requires more practice and skill to get good at it.

@@taboohorse9682not true. Automatic cars disengage the transmission while braking. The only reason to not put it in neutral is using engine braking to help, or save brake pads. You have full directional control of the car in neutral, minus the ability to accelerate. What exactly do you think you lose by putting the car in neutral?

@@1m3agle Automatic vehicles don't disengage the transmission when breaking. It goes down in gears, until you put it in neutral yourself. Hence when you stop, you just need to get off the break and accelerate. So stop and now you can put the car in neutral. *for the UK test* and comes from a driver instructor.

Never go to neutral to stop. Better to go down each gear as shifting to a lower gear slows the car down without straining your brake pads so much. The gears and the brakes slow the car simultaneously and if you need to continue driving during slowing down you’re already on gear to just drive on

Red light ahead, brake to slow down, step on the clutch, put it on neutral, hand brake up, leave the pedals and wait, green light, step on the clutch, shift on first gear, slowly lift the clutch to the biting point, hand brake down, slowly apply the accelerate to give the car some rhythm motion, step on the clutch, put gear 2, leave the clutch slowly while you step on the accelerate slow, if the car is well balanced leave the clutch then accelerate to speed up. Move to gear 3,4 and 5 when necessarily.

Guys… just bring your manual cars to a place that has a really small hill/incline. Go into 1st gear, press down on clutch so the car will start to slowly roll back, slowly release the clutch the point where the cars stop rolling. Now having learn the (natural breaking point, where the gears are engaged) I was able to quickly pick up how to rev match and down shift properly.

When braking switch to second gear and keep the clutch down. That way you can accelerate right away when the traffic light turns to green when you are still moving. I like driving manual more then with a automatic gearbox you don't need the brake all the time with a manual gearbox so you will have a smoother ride.

As a uk citizen (we all drive manual cars like the rest of the world) this comment section is both making me laugh and cringe (also you would pretty much never put the car in neutral unless you’re actually parking the car in which case you put it in neutral until you shut off the engine then put it in any gear with the handbrake on. You should be only on neutral if the wait is going to be large (many seconds) and you are in a flat surface or going down hill to rest your left foot. Otherwise is better to just be in first gear waiting with break and clutch to pressed ready for moving traffic or to uphill start. tha is what my teacher told me.

You could also shift to first, floor the clutch and press the brake till it stopps let the brake go and while your standing find the middle point with the clutch were the Car is active but not moving so when you press it a millimeter down it goes driving slow and while you are letting loose of the clutch you slowl step on the gas, so you dont have to always shift to neutral

In a country like India, you cant take your foot off the clutch. Theres potholes, extremely bad traffic and people dont follow any rules. You have to learn to feather it. Sometimes you drive without pressing the accelerator and just feather the clutch.

Here in sunny South Africa 🇿🇦, for those who actually stop at a red light, you never wait in neutral for the light to change, _especially_ after dark. Always in gear, foot lightly on the brake or hovering over the accelerator, ready to let the clutch out and accelerate in case you see someone running towards the car to hijack you. When I was learning how to drive a car, I drove a manual, that didn’t need you to lightly step on the accelerator. Like, the RPM was high enough that you could start on first gear without any pressure on the gas. I got so mad, when I realized I had to apply gas to the pedal. My teacher did *not* educate us on that.

Too early taking the clutch,I let the engin brake help the foot brake as long as possible ,only then I use the clutch to change gear or put the gear in neutral . Specially in higher speeds using the clutch to put the car in neutral does not help at all the foot brake and slowing down efficiently.

dont coast in nuetral to come to a stop, downshift and engage your gears before stopping then nuetral if you want too. same with clutch coasting

Never put the gear stick in neutral unless you're parking and the vehicle has already fully stopped. If you're stopping at lights or in traffic, keep it in first gear.

I taught myself stick shift a year ago whilst working for a Toyota dealership They brought a 2019 ford focus RS in that needed a detail (my job) and gas put in it and since everyone was on lunch they dumped the keys on me and took off.. I said to myself I’m either going to make it there and back and feel good abt myself or I’m going to break it, either way it’ll be a great story! Fast forward a year later and I’ve taught my new partner at work how to drive stick now and I’ve bought my own 97 accord 5 speed to play around with 😅

When moving away, apply about a coin thickness of accelerator (2k - 3k rpms mabye), lift clutch to bite point (the point where you start to move and rpms drop). Hold at bite point until rpms begin to rise and release the clutch

Leave it in gear to the last second and actually lern to down shift let the engine do the braking as well will reduce wear on the pads

Change the gear after stopping not before also braking while in gear will stop you a lot slower than if you were to press clutch first then brake not forgetting to mention you will encrease the longevity of your brake pads and less load on your transmission!
