This is my first attempt at solidifying sand, which we get from our underground mine at Sandland. I thought it would be cool to either turn the sand back into sandstone, or turn it into building material. While I know we can make bricks or concrete from the sand, I'd like to find something that looks more like a solid, permanent sand castle.
I tried some "normal" additives like Portland Cement and mortar, as well as some "strange" additives like epoxy, hot glue, and... beer? Obviously some of these worked better than others. I tested each mix in a variety of ways for strength, freeze / thaw resistance, water resistance, and fire resistance.
This video might be kind of boring, there are no DIY cannons or vehicles or explosions. Maybe watch it on 1.5 or 2x :-P

The usual way to do this is to mix in a small proportion of sodium silicate (aka waterglass), it takes much less than you were using of your various additives here. The sand is then exposed to carbon dioxide, either artificially or by just leaving it out for atmospheric CO2 to diffuse through. The resulting sandstone is weaker than natural sandstone, but it is heatproof. You can find a lot of videos on it, it's a common way of making sand casting molds without using oil binders.

I definitely second sodium silicate. Sand cores are pretty darn stout, I imagine that thinned sodium silicate sprayed from a garden sprayer might harden things up nicely.

Are you talking about making firebrick? That sounds similar to the processes that I've read about

i think that it might work to use it in mud bricks, i bet if you mixed it 50/50 with mud and then added hay/grass it would be pretty strong

If it's not going to look like sandstone with cement you might as well do sandbag/earthbag style building where tubes/bags of sand are stacked (with barbed wire) to make walls.

I've thought about using paint as a poor man's concrete. My local recycling centers all have free paint, sometimes even a partial 5 gallon bucket.

Nice job on the video! I think they make composite decking by melting PET soda bottles and mixing it with heated sawdust. Could heat up some sand and mix in bottles. PET is pretty tough stuff and nearly free. Could heat the sand to a precise temp so that it does not burn the PET.

Add compression. House walls made of old tires, filled with rammed dirt are popular amongst hippie off-grid weenies. Zero cost but immense labor. A super-thinned mixture of epoxy and acetone could be poured over compressed blocks, suitable for small objects. Fun stuff!

How about sone enginerred earth with sand? Maybe test out layers of binder paper, wax paper, plywood, chicken wire, old tire chains, old t-shirts. Also picrete structures when the Minnesota winter comes back. Ultimate snow fort!

I forget the channel, but some guys used little electric tillers to rip up polyurethane foam from the bilge of a foamed boat, and it seemed to chew through very quickly. Might be worth a whirl.

Shoulda sent the sand to Florida for use in Sand bags for Hurricane Elsa... Also you can get a decent digital scale online for like $7-10, it's an easy way to upgrade your science abilities. For your bar, if you're making some benches or booths carved out of the stone I think you should leave a large block carved, cover it in a layer of concrete/sand mix and anywhere that needs to be softer like for seating you should add a thin layer of the silicone mixture experimenting with shape to add texture too like bumps or a 2D sine wave/shallow egg carton pattern. might also help soften it up.

Did you know that Sand is mixed with calcium oxide, sodium Carbonate and possible recycled glass to be heated up to make new Glass. The Global glass manufacturing factory was at St Helens, Pilkington. Near Liverpool, UK. Also careful with the Superglue. Cause if you use it for experiments for e.g. indoors then You might have a fume problem as well as breathing it in accidentally. Believe me, that happened to me before.

You keep mocking your scientific ability....and yet your methods, observations and data analysis are by any metric.....scientific. You don't need fancy equipment, software or statistical analysis to apply the scientific method. All of which is to say: You're doing an awesome job :)
